Can Paul Williams come back from this?
This was one of the most devestating 1 punch KO's (by Sergio Martinez) in a big fight, that I can ever recall seeing. Can Williams come back from this, and be a player at Jr. Middle & Middleweight again?

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
I hope so. I was a fan of both Sergio and Paul before that fight. I'm rooting for the Punisher this weekend, but a lot of people are picking Lara in the upset.

Prolly because of Paul getting knocked out in his last fight, i'm betting that Williams comes back with a vengeance and either stops Lara or wins a clear cut UD, and if he doesn't his career pretty much goes down the tubes.

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
he stated retirement for 2012, he is not motivated anymore i think.
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
I'm not sure how he's going to look. I wouldn't be suprised if Lara won though. I expect it to be a good fight.
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
He can come back. The question is where does he go. With his frame, he can put on some muscle, but Everywhere he goes, Martinez has already been there and could be back. Maybe he should fight Cintron again and reassess.( Perhaps in an octogon or something Cintron cannot jump out of)
Lara has 3 first round Ko's in the last 4 according to boxrec, When he stepped up in comp, he got a majority decision. Williams will be the toughest guy he's fought. It will either be a comeback win over an undefeated guy... or "Deja Vu all over again". The first few rounds will be interesting, if Williams starts slow and his chin and confidence aren't what they were. Lara could be sniffing for weakness and looking for the ambush.

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Paul Williams is strong enough mentally and good enough skill wise to come back from that devastating knockout. Lennox did it twice and I believe Paul is made of the same stuff.
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Paul is 29 so he relatively young and he hasnt taken a ton of punishment although he does get hit in fights. I dont think he will be a undisputed champ or p4p but may win a title or two and can make a good living. He has a good style and attitude so he will get TV time. His aura of invincibility is gone from others fighters perspectives and even probably in his own mind. Time will tell. Amir Khan seems to be fairing ok after an equally devastating KO so I think he can come back. plus Paul was KO'd by a true top P4P guy with deceptive power. Just ask Kermit cintron who said something like "No one can hit that hard" when Sergio knocked him on his ass and he cried and they ruled a head but.

Me and my wife watched this fight together, and we were both yelling WTF are you doing counting? Get the damn mouth piece out of his mouth and get the Doc's in there.

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Martinez was not even looking, it was a lucky punch. :)
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Two of my favorite KOs that I watch over and over are this one and Donaire KOing Darchinyun. That was wicked as well.
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
I jumped two feet out of my chair watching that the first time. I think my wife was asking me what happened.
Paul shouldn't have any problems coming back from that, his problem is he should use that frame to stay outside more. (If he did that he wouldn't be getting hit with a lucky punch.) Someone pointed out that Martinez used that same punch a number of times. I went back and took a look and as I recall he connected with that punch.
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
CAN he? Sure. Lots of fighters have rebounded strongly from getting drilled. Roberto Duran, Ezzard Charles and Jack Demspey among others.
WILL he? No idea. That question really makes Saturday interesting doesn't it?

[laughing] That if you count he had already landed eleven times before the one that finished Williams. Martinez's trainer really has a great tactical eye.

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
I hope so Williams is a class act.

Yep, Martinez would've been just as surprised that punch landed and with such force. He wasn't looking and was trying to avoid Williams punch, it did land and landed hard. How Williams manages to handle the psychological barrier is the question this week.
I am not that convinced about Martinez.

this.
It's one thing to get tagged and have your legs go...it's another to get ko'd COLD.

I couldn't agree more!!! Every time I see him fight, I always say to Danny that if I got anywhere near him, I would cut that shit off his chin.
If I'm not mistaken, can't a fighter request for their opposition to shave that shit off if they feel it could be troublesome during the fight? As in, if they are holding and he rubs that shit in someone's eye or into a cut, because he could easily do that with his height advantage. I would request it, just to get into his head.
Anyways, to answer the question, don't know, don't care. Never was a fan of Williams, something about him just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it was the whole "I'm the most feared man in boxing" crap. I guess he can't say that now. ;)
BTW, that's my fav knock out. I've watched that probably at least 250 times! I just sit there and hit that 7 second rewind button on my dvr over and over again. My son was also watching the fight with me, and he went nuts when it happened. I still crack up when I watch it, and I hear Bob Papa saying loudly "good left hand, and down goes Williams", you hear in the background Kellerman saying "Hoooly Christ". ;D

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Yeah it's a tall order, this thread just got me thinking. Can anyone think of a high profile fighter who was viciously KO'ed like that and then rebounded to beat a solid opponent in their very next fight? I'm sure there are tons of examples, but in recent history, I'm completely at a loss.
-
Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Sure he can comeback and he's ready to prove it.
Can't hack him for getting right back in the mix and fighting Lara.
Lara has yet to really prove himself so I see this as a very winable fight for Paul.
Especially if he has a high output.

Come on Master...
That's pretty laughable. Sergio had landed that same shot previously.
Yes he moved his head away, but it was to avoid RuPauls shot.
You can see in the replay at the 1:30 mark that Sergios head moves but look closely at his eyes. He is looking dead at RuPaul.
Also don't forget that luck is when preparation meets oppourtunity... ;)
Sergio said before the fight he would get the KO.

There is def. a rule but I've never really seen it enforced.
I mean boxers like Duran, John Ruiz and recently Haye have fought with full grown beards...

Mayorga after the Tito TKO beat Pichirillo for a strap...
Montiel just beat Cermeno after losing to Nonito...

Why not just make one of signature things?

I guess you haven't really looked at my Martinez sigi then? ;)
Besides, it's much better watching it on a 65" TV vs a little sigi. ;D

I thought so, but wasn't positively sure.
Maybe no one has ever requested it yet? Like I said, I would, just to get into his head, and to piss him off. ;D

Good call on Montiel. I honestly haven't followed anything below featherweight closlely in recent times, so will have to look into Cermeno. If he's even of decent quality then it's good on Montiel, the Donaire KO was really bad. I actually watched Mayorga vs Pichirillo live and Mayorga really looked like someone who was coming off a long layoff and unsure of himself, if Pichirillo could have punched at all it might have been different, Mayorga didn't look good in that one imo.

Re: Can Paul Williams come back from this?
Paul being KO'ed, do make this weekend very interesting. But I think he will get pass Lara by KO. I'm already asking what's next for Paul. The 154 is the division where he should settle down at. Although he still claim he can still make 147, he will not get Manny or Floyd in the ring. And there's nobody else at that weight for him to fight. But 154 . . . if he gets through Lara . . .
Alfredo Angulo - Should be fighting more often and still a majpr player
Sergei Dzinziruk - Put up a great effort against Martinez and still WBO champ
Antonio Margarito vs Cotto 2 - the winner of this fight
Kermit Cintron - history
Austin Trout - A step up but safe fight for Williams. No ko's in last 10 fights
Saul Alvarez - IMO, still green but a bull. Styles makes fights. WBC champ
Cornelius Bundradge - IBF champ and needs a fight beside the contender to be on center stage
Cory Spinks - recent win and when he's in great shape, a style that can give a lot of people problems
Vanes Martirosyan - chasing Saul. But too needs a mainstream fight
James Kirkland - Got to get back on his Wolfe. Again, styles makes fights
