I lost my job recently and being that I am in the process of buying a new house and we have a baby due in November, it's stressful times. Anyway I got an interview for a job that perfectly suits my skills and that I really want. I put down my ex boss/good friend as a reference for the recruitment firm to speak to to verify my achievements etc etc. They subsequently spoke to him. My ex boss is a good mate, we speak every few days and he knows my predicament. Anyway I have just been for the second interview for this role (3 people were called back including me) when I finished and was been led to the door my the interviewer, who was sitting waiting to go in? - my mate (ex mate!!!) The cunt had asked the recruitment firm what job I had gone for and then approached them himself and tried to get the job he knew I was so desperate for. He is already employed and knows that I am desperate.

What a complete cunt. I am trying to stay calm, becuase the old me would've gone round and stamped his skull in, but I am trying to be restrained!!

if I was an employer that would set alarm bells for me if one person had put another down as a reference then applied. I would ask them about it but thats just me.

You know up until this point, I was trying to do the devil's advocate thing of trying to justify his actions by maybe saying he'd got wind that he was about to be made redundant or that he was there to try & give you a great reference in person. In the words of Norman Stone, 'what a piece of shit he turned out to be'. Don't do anything violent, the fact that he was your referee & applied will likely have set alarm bells ringing already. Also if you don't get the job, I'm fairly sure that on a employers reference they are not allowed to bad mouth you, only refuse to comment. If he has deliberately sabotaged your interview and chances, I'm pretty sure that legally you might actually have a case against him. I'm not sure, but I'm sure I've read a comparable story somewhere that resulted in a loss of earnings payout.

Nah, not quite ......... in the US and UK an employer is allowed to bad mouth you - but only if what they say is proveable and factually correct. For example, if you had a record that showed you were late for work 4 days out of 5 they could say your timekeeping was poor. If you had a series of complaints about you recorded on your file, they could say you were a poor teamplayer.

Well I didn't get the job, but some consulation nor did the cunt and apprently he was never in the running.

The reason I didn't get the job is nearly as frustrating as that cunt trying to get the job. They issued a job spec and I tailored my interview and my presentation to be exactly what they were looking for (according to job spec) Leaving out lots of successes in other areas that I didn't think were as relevant. They subsequenty have decided that they now do not want what they asked for becuase they are 9 months behind being ready for that person (i.e me) and have gone with somebody with more experience in another area. The stupid thing is that this 'other area' is actually my main strength and where I have had massive successes. I didn't talk about these successes, because at the time they were not relevant and were not brought up at any stage of the interview process and these achivements were also removed from my CV by the recruitment firm, who 'taliored' the CV to the job sepc they were given

Whole thing's a joke. I've writtne to the employer and explained the predicament and advised them that they have made the wrong choice, won't do me any good now though :(
