Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
I'm taking Mares in a close decision. I have really liked this tournament, it's been very quick and no BS in between matches besides Agbeko's collapse before the first scheduled fight with Mares. Quick and to the point, 4 best bantamweights. It will be nice to see it come to a end and see the winner possibly fight Donaire.

I'd rather see Donaire KO Agbeko, than Mares, and I really don't believe Mares beats Agbeko anyway, but that's just me.

I'm goin with Mares. He's a sensational talent. Lighting fast.
Agbecko is very awkard, quick and a hard puncher himself.
He smashed Perez last time out.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
Not terribly thrilling? Really. Bantam tourney has been solid and these two are very under the radar and glad its coming off. Agbeko has improved his boxing quite abit and picks spots more but I worry how much his issues are weight related. Mares mixes well and body will pay many taxes on Joseph but I think Agbeko takes him deep and pulls off solid dec win.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
I hopped on tha Mares bandwagon the first time I saw him on the Golden Boy "Fight Night" show what 3 years ago? I think he had 13-14 fights at that time but even then he was a dedicated bodypuncher I began calling "whack-whack-whack" because he'd triple up on those hokks to the ribs.
Agbaeko is going to be a real test.
If everyone will just stay home this division could be a real treat over the next 2-3 years.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
Mares takes this one. I wonder if he fights Donaire afterward.

Kong is going to put a whippin' on Mares saturday, even Mares own mother won't recognize him.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
I gotta admit that I have only seen these guys a couple of times but I think Agbeko takes him to a clear cut decision win. Also I think Agbeko vs Donaire is a more intriguing match up style wise......but thats just my opinion.

you're not the only one. i just gotta stand by my guy. i've been a mares fan for a minute.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
I like both of these guys, Mares was fantastic against Vic and i had him winning that fight despite Vic disputing the decision. Agbeko is a tough guy, Mares will have to be at the top of his game again to win and i think he can. I guess Vic fights the winner again after this?
Mares by decision

Good tournament, would have been better if Agbeko didn't have issues. But one shouldn't complain as King Kong is a tough fighter and things do happen in athletics.
I favor Mares ever so slightly in the final.
And Vic who finished 1-1 will not have hurt himself with his performances. He still should be in line for another big fight soon.
Perez clearly looked like the big loser and didn't look good physically in either fight. Only 32, but if my memory isn't gone he had alot of amateur fights and he has had some tough pro fights (including 2 with Agbeko, 1 with Mares, 1 with Vic).

Darchinyan is still in the mix, in a way, before he retires, i'd like to see him get another crack at Donaire, but at this point in his career, I believe Vic would get starched in a rematch. Donaire seems to be on a different level from most pugs in his weight class.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares - Saturday
Abner Mares is like a little JMM, i've been impressed with him for awhile. When i was seeing him on undercards, i hope he wins but Joseph Agbeko is no joke and its very hard to pick a winner.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
Really very suprised its so quite about this fight...
I like Mares, alot. Don't know a great deal about Agbeko though to be honest, all I heard is he kinda rough housed Darchynian? but then outboxed Perez? Aber finds himself in close fights, I feel he has the skills to win more comfortably, but he's got that warriors attitude.
I'm excited.

Fights start in about 25 minutes, Agbeko (King Kong) is a good fighter, i'm expecting a very competitive fight that could go either way, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
cheers

Is that the televised card or the main event?

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
Agbeko vs. Mares is the main event, i'm sure how much of the other fights Showtime is going to show, if any.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
Yeh gotta agree Luke, this is a huge fight as is the tourney.
I think Agbeko has really transformed from the face first steamroller who battered Luis Perez and fought in a ugly cave man fight in 1st defense with William Gonzalez. He really was overlooked going in vs Vic...and then schooled him, scores in 1st Perez fight didn't do either guy justice in a nice scrap...flip a coin really, then was a boxing fool in rematch. I think his weight and health issue can be concerning...Mares body attack will be telling if Agbeko isn't smart. This is a great match up
Can we sticky this bad boy btw???

Ive stalked the forum enough to know your high on Agbeko ;D.
Thing is if Agbeko win's I wouldnt have a problem with him going against Donaire straight away( I wouldnt favour him but he's a tough cookie). If Mares comes out on top I dont think he's ready yet...
-
I like both dudes . Abeko has two major flaws IMO . One he leans over two much , and two ( and I'm only going by the hbo translator ) his corner is absolutly worthless . I see mares catching abeko with an uppercut all night and winning a tough tough decision

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
He's a bit of a billy goat Mar, well he was ;D
Point deduct prior to bell for Agbekos retro 'Kwame' hair :-X

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
I don't think Donaire faces either of these guys. I don't recall where I read it, but I don't believe these guys are on Arum's radar for Donaire.
-
I'm a converted Carl froch fan ...i admit it.
-
Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
Gus Johnson keeps turning up like a bad penny, nice gesture by Tarver, dedicating the his win over Danny Green to Nick Charles.
Looks like Agbeko vs. Mares will be the only fight Showtime will air, and none of the undercard fights.

That's a shame, it would make for great fights.

Joseph better box, all I'm saying.

i have a feeling Arum wants Donaire to move up in weight again and fight either Lopez or Gamboa, ...
Then Arum has all the fighters in the fight and doesn't have to split the cash with anyone else. Winner becomes a superstar and loser can rebuild.

Guarenteed they will go toe to toe at some point... I'm hoping Mares swings hard to the body when they do.

I dont mind that... Donaire Gamboa would be a fantastic clash.
Also leaves the winner of this to hopefully dominate the weight for a couple of fights and the move up with a big big rep

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
this should be a damn good fight.
In addition, if either guy gets knocked down or clearly hurt, Gus Johnson will scream like a 12 yr old girl that got to meet Justin Bieber.

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
Agbeko and Mares coming into the ring, I never realized how "Americanized" Mares is when he talks, just sounds like an Hispanic kid from California. For some reason i'd thought he was more of a "Mexican" fighter, who spoke broken english.

I had always anticipated he was more 'spanish sounding' maybe being more american is why people think he doesn't/won't have such a big following???

Re: Bantamweight tourney final - Agbeko vs. Mares fight thread
Mares has some fans who made their way to Vegas.

Saying that crowd seems very in Mares favour
