Sergio Martinez on Miguel Cotto
I know there was a thread on here about Cotto on Sergio. Here is what Sergio has to say about Cotto and a few other fighters, along with a link to the interview.
Sergio Martinez: 'Cotto is afraid of fighting me' - ESPN
On going uo to 168
"I'm not a natural middleweight like Kelly Pavlik, who is a big fighter. If I had to go up a little bit to a catchweight in order to get a fight with guys like Andre Ward or Carl Froch, I wouldn't have any problems. But going up directly to 168 would be suicidal for me. I walk around at less than 168 when I'm not even training, usually at about 165. I'm definitely not ready for that division."
On Miguel Cotto
"I hope Margarito wins, because I know he wouldn't have any problem fighting me, which is something Cotto won't do. Cotto doesn't want to face me. He will make excuses about the money, or about this or that day not being good for him, or about not liking the color of my socks -- anything -- I don't know. Lately he has been saying that the money is too short. I have to tell Cotto that if all he cares about is money, then I promise to hand over my purse to him if he wins, no problem. I can sign on that, anytime and anyplace"
On being striped of his belt
"I lost it in a ridiculous way, in an office, and through a telephone call. And then, after seeing Chavez win it, the way in which he won it, and seeing him tell everyone that he is going to fight me, I became hopeful that Chavez would dare to fight me someday. But Chavez isn't going to have the courage to fight me. He simply won't. Neither Chavez, nor his team, nor his entourage or his promoters, everyone around him who are protecting him"
Re: Sergio Martinez on Miguel Cotto
Feeling sorry for Sergio, hope he gets the big pay days he fully deserves.
Re: Sergio Martinez on Miguel Cotto
Sergio is telling it like it is.
However, he'd better worry about defending his belt tomorrow night, and not overlook his opponent, Barker.

He's not saying anything, like it is! What he's doing is trying to bait Cotto and/or Margarito, who ever wins. He says other (smaller) boxers don't want to fight him because the don't want the risk. What a hypocrite! The truth is he himself is looking for the least amount of risk for the biggest payday.

Yeah your right.
He was scared to death to come up and fight Kelly Pavlik.
And he wouldn't give Paul "The most ducked fighter in boxing" Williams a rematch.
Oh wait a minute...;D

What he said is true.
Kelly Pavlik is a lot bigger guy naturally than Martinez.
Martinez is a blown up Jr. Middle.
He will fight 168 lbers at a catch weight.
And he will fight Pacquaio at a catch weight.
Re: Sergio Martinez on Miguel Cotto
Realistically if he were to get a marquee fight a catchweight would be the only way. All the real money fights would be against guys competing at 147 or 168 respectively, and Martinez is right in the middle. Floyd or Manny aren't even welterweights, and noone at super middle is about to move down. It's his only option but I doubt he'll get anyone he wants.

That is exactly why he's so full of shit. Mayweather, Cotto & Pacquiao are all two and three "natural weight class" smaller than him. The reason why he is trying to make a fight with them is because that is where the money is and where there is less risk for the reward. He's at a weight class that has no money, it's assumed easier for him to win going down than it is up. I think he'd beat Pavik but if his reason he's not ready to fight him is because of his weight then he'll never be ready. I like Martinez, I just don't like the BS that other boxers are afraid of him when he himself has the same argument about going up.

I wouldnt say Floyd, Pac and Cotto can are least risk. Martinez wants them for obvious reasons.
Marg is the only guy who might possibly have the courage to take the fight but even if he beats Cotto I think he will be in a good cherry picking position so he isnt likley to pick the hardest opponent for the least money which is what Sergio would be.

Bro you know that he already beat Pavlik right ? Absolutely dominated him in fact and that is why Sergio Martinez is the middleweight champion. He beat Pavlik for the title. They already fought.
Re: Sergio Martinez on Miguel Cotto
I don't believe he actually believes what he's saying. Calling out and insulting fighters that would make for attractive paydays is as old as boxing itself. This is all Sergio is doing. He may have trouble getting fights however, as he's one of the best middleweights out there. I believe he has more than an even chance of beating anyone out there, including Mayweather. Pacquiao, not so much, but anything is possible.
I don't even believe that Mayweather is afraid of Pacquiao, at least not in terms of getting beat up. For fuck's sake, these guys are fighters. It's all about the $$$. It's too much about the $$$ IMHO.

Precisely. In the same conversation, he manages to accuse Cotto of the same thing he is exhibiting toward Pavlik and the other bigger guys. Classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.
;)

As of now, Mayweather and Pacquiao are fighting two weight classes below him, but Cotto is fighting only at one weight class below him. Not to mention that Mayweather and Pacquiao have fought at 154 which is where Martinez fought for the large majority of his career. Like I said in another thread, if Martinez can make weight safetly at 154, which if he went into the fight last Saturday weighing 165, he probably be can, then I don't see why he shouldn't be challenging the best at 154. Cotto right now is allegedly the best at 154 at least according to Ring Magazine. Also, understand that it's not like he is challenging Victor Ortiz or Andre Berto, he is challenging the p4p #1 and #2 fighters in the world. Most people favor Pacquiao and Mayweather over Martinez. How can he be bullying fighters that people predict to beat him? Frankly, if Floyd or Manny wanted to outdo the other, beating Martinez would definitely do the trick. There is no way the other could top a win over Martinez and it would cement their legacy in the history books.
Re: Sergio Martinez on Miguel Cotto
this is why i don't like p4p rankings, they say that pacquiao and mayweather are the best but actually they are just the best in a limited weight range and actually they could be punished if they go up. And same for sergio. Besides boxers punches look so ugly and soft in the lowest divisions that they seem clowns of the real thing, the heavyweight division. Just my opinion. I can't stand those p4p lists with so good boxers like v. klitschko in 13th just because the others are bad while other weaklings are rated high and duck and fight 37 olders and more instead... and the worst thing ever was lennox lewis receiving rematch requests at 38 after that heroical thing of beating the next generation boxer at that age just because they thought that a prime is defined by kos and etc in the latest fights instead of by age. And maybe it is but not for me.

what's the difference between Martinez saying that he'll fight guys who are naturally bigger than him at a catchweight and Pacquiao constantly asking for fights at catchweights, hell he would always feed that bullshit that he had to eat around 7,000 calories a day to make 147, yet now against Marquez out of the blue he can't make 140?
get the hell out of here with that bullshit dude, when it's Manny doing the bullshit you start with the he went up 8 divisions, and that he was still growing while moving up, well Martinez picked up boxing a grown man at 20, so not really too hard to see how it would be more difficult for him to move around in weight when he was already fighting at his natural weight class (Jr. Middleweight)
