Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id...e-million-buys
I was reading Dan Raphael's blog on espn and he says reason why no announcement has been made is because Golden Boy hasn't given HBO permission because they need Floyds permission.
Floyd is in the process of settling some IRS debt, when it's reached an official announcement is expected somewhere in the 1.2 mill range..

Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
That's a pretty good turnout, proves Floyd is indeed still the money man in the division.

Forget division, how about the whole sport.
Raphael also posted on twitter his question to Schaefer on the BCD Bhop fight, not good he says. Expect 100,000 or less

Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
Is that the official Mayweather-Ortiz PPV buys? I read something different but then it has a question mark at the end.
Mayweather-Ortiz only 850,000 PPV buys?
Here's another interesting read.

ha I meant the sport, not sure why I put division lol
It's really bizarre to me that so few fans are interested in Hopkins Dawson. Number 1 against number 2 for the undisputed title. Surely it means something. Stellar undercard too. Shame.

But whatever Floyd earns is what he gets, whereas Pac uses most of that money in the Philippines which means his earnings will have to be multiplied by 43 to get the country's currency. So the buying power of what Pac gets is greater.

haha.. true that.. He's living like a king over there. With that said, I'll be shocked if Pacman ever turns broke.

Honestly, I don't know why anyone would by $50 to watch 2 hours of boxing.

Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
Unless HBO and GBP revealss what the real numbers are, I wont give a damn on these reports.
But one thing is I know for sure, the numbers didnt hit the expectations of both HBO and GBP which is why they are keeping it for now. If its acceptable to them, they would have announced it with lots of drama and fireworks, well knowing GBP.
-
Not correct Dench,
PBF is hashing out his IRS business and Settlements.
HBO contractually need GBP which in turn contractually need Floyds OK to release the numbers.
If the IRS found out he did a over a million buys on a PPV they aren't going to be to kind to him on an easy payment plan.

Dawson has never been a seller, he can't even pack 5000 people in Connecticut where he does come from. Not sure why though as he's a very skilled fighter and is not totally without charisma.

The guy is 2 towns up from me and their is no mention at all about him on the news etc..
No Billboards, no commercials.. Connecticut has no mainstream pro sports. if he had marketability and fanfare he would do well around here.
The kid has the personality of a sweaty gym sock so I think thats what buffaloes him in the popularity contest

I don't think the IRS cares whether Mayweather's fight with Ortiz will come up with more or less than a million PPV buys. Because Floyd will still have to pay the same amount that he owes them. The IRS has not been kind to the middle or lower class, why would they be kind to him who they very well know had earned millions? Those PPV buys will matter to them next year.
Dench opinion appears reasonable. That's what I was also thinking of.

5k is a pretty good number for a fight. Any promoter would be proud of that kind of live draw.
As for the PPV numbers you guys cant actually be that dumb as to think the actual viewer numbers aren't known immediately. Because everyone should know that they fights are delivered through digital media. HBO ain't going to pay the fighter if the customer doesn't pay. That is partially the real reason why it's taking do long to get the final tally. HBO just got smarter about making payments due to disputes against the previously announced numbers and the actual payments.
-
Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
When a PPV numbers are announced, I will bet everything that they announce the actual PPV buys in order to make the fight look more successful. But of course, the fighters would have been made aware ahead of time that the percentage they will get will come from those who actually paid for it.
So as fan johnny noted, the actual viewer numbers should have been known immediately since they are delivered through digital media.
The lesson that can be learned by Floyd if the PPV numbers are indeed far below expectations is that he has to fight either Pacquiao or Martinez to achieve high PPV numbers. After the stunt that he did to Ortiz, I don't think the people will forgive him if he again fights someone else.
-
You are so Bias it's ridiculous..
I will trust a respected Boxing Journalist over you.. who by the way consistently slags Floyd off. Dan Raphael would not have posted that if it wasn't close.
I don't always agree on Dans biased opinions but his facts and knowledge of the business nuances is tops in the industry thats why I read his stuff.
Do you know any facts about the subject? Or are you a 2 bit PAC fan who can't stand that Floyd is the bigger draw?
I will also say that Floyd has done better numbers with Marquez than
PAC will next month.
-
Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
I couldn't care less about the numbers, but anyone who paid for that should feel seriously ripped off. 50 bucks plus for a couple of rounds and a sucker punch?
It makes a mockery of PPV and someone like Floyd should realise that he is there to satiate an audience and not to indulge in his school yard bully mentality. Sure, it's not nice to have some guy kissing you, but you are on show and people expect more.
Many will think twice before paying next time out and so they should.
-
Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
I have a feeling that all the Floyd huggers will take umbrage with my proclamation and argue that headbutts shouldn't be allowed either. However, when the ref has taken a point I think that you should rise above it. The ref did his job and Floyd lost his cool....because of that Floyd loses a lot of brownie points. Obviously Ortiz should find a new job in a male brothel, but nobody ever really regarded Ortiz as anything in the first place. He is kind of secondary to the argument.
-
Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
I do not believe these figures and believe they are massaged to make out that Floyd is bigger than he really is.
-
Floyd Hugger Checking in. Miles you realize Floyd is the PPV king and the whole think twice mentality is crap. The guy showed great restraint when Judah did his dirt and so be it with the drivel. Believe me the poo pooers are in the minority.
Every fight you guys say he runs and he sucks blah blah and your not paying for it. But most are the numbers don't lie..

Yes complete conspiracy, Dan Raphael a Mayweather hater puts his credibility and journalistic neck on the line for this cover up.
Not sure it is 1.2 million but if it's a million or close thats not bad seeing Ortiz is an unknown aside from hardcore fans. So they are tuning into seeing Mayweather

What a load of huggery bullshit. Floyd is the 'PPV king'? Do you have any idea how gay that sounds? Are you inviting me to give you a kiss on the lips here?
The numbers don't lie, but see how a rematch goes or another handpicked opponent. Floyd did well because it was a first fight back, people won't be fooled again.
It was a crap fight when all is said and done. Did you think it was a good fight? No of course not. Nobody did. Floyd will do much less well off next time out, unless he actually fights someone.
-
Miles your a broken record, your opinion is the overwhelming minority in a big picture of the "you see next time"
I'm sorry he is the #1 PPV revenue generating Boxer
I know you are the ultimate authority in Gay. So hope the above is better for you :-D
Lighten up man!

I am a broken record? Really? Shall I start a thread asking if the fight was any good? You know the answer would be a let down. But you want to take comfort in numbers? It's a fallacy and supremely gay. As I say let Floyd try to repeat it.
Only a Pac fight could satiate people really. These numbers are just numbers, they have no meaning. Metallica sell more than Suede it just shows that people are generally speaking....dumb. Floyd sells a lot, but so does Justin Bieber. There is no accounting for quality in an instance like this. The general public is quite retarded.
-

They all can't be winners miles. You move on from incidents like that

No, the numbers don't lie. They tell us that a guy who quit against Maidana was a credible Mayweather opponent. Hahahaha.
No, Cotto, Margarito, Martinez nor pacqiaou, but Ortiz?
Fair enough. Mayweather pops da charts. What a dude! :-\

Why don't you discredit the merits of my counter arguments instead of just labeling me as bias? Have you ran out of logical explanations? If you will notice, my comments are in response to the issues that were brought up. I posted a different perspective on the fight being possibly 850,000 mil and provided the link to show that I did not make that up. And I did not present that as fact. Some of the other opinions that I expressed are the same as that of the posters who commented in this thread.
I have always said that Mayweather do have higher PPV numbers than Pacquiao. But I believe that Mayweather being American and those fights being on American soil may have contributed to that. However, there is a limit to what the fans and the general public would be willing to tolerate. Floyd's PPV numbers, and that of Manny as well, are bound to go down if they don't fight each other. And Mayweather pulling that stunt on Ortiz isn't going to help his PPV numbers if it's not Pacquiao or Martinez that he's fighting.

Why, are those numbers already official? Good for Floyd if they are but I wouldn't be surprised if the 850,000 is more accurate.

I have clashed with miles on almost every issue in this forum but I agree with him on this thread.

Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
The article also claimed that the Mosely vs Pac numbers where never released.. I wonder Why
-
Weird that the people who where so confident that it did only 850,000 are mum? And that GBP was quiet about releasing the numbers because it failed expectations
-
Anyone know how many Haye vs Klitscko did? Just wondering
-
Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
these numbers don't really matter too much do they? They are not going to help make the Pac Floyd fight are they?
-
Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
These numbers mean nothing in actual viewership, these numbers are what they are paid on, but what about the rest of us around the world who watch for free by other means.
With free streams and everyone sick of paying big $$$ to watch a fight, most boxing fans are on at least one or more sites like this. I am not a paying customer and never purchased a PPV, I wonder how many millions are just like me and won't buy the PPV but will watch it on a free stream.
Anyone else.?
-
I guess not. More like bragging rights. Just so funny that everyone hates Floyd, but somehow he is hands down the biggest draw in boxing..

Geez, JT... so what does THAT prove? So he makes more money from boxing than anyone else. So what? I don't get these arguments. All they do is demostrate how people get fooled by used-car salesmen and snake-oil pitch men in circuses. Floyd is still a lousy ambassador for boxing among the general public. No matter how skilled he may be, his fights (especially lately) are still full of controversy and unsatisfactory endings. But people keep coming back for more.
I know you're a big PBF fan, JT... but try to see things from a slightly different perspective. Wouldn't it be great if Floyd, with all his God-given talent, was slightly less of an A-hole, took on all comers without pretexts, and generally comported himself a little better in and out of the ring?
Just to show you I'm not just a hater... I still remember his fight against Judah. First, I was rooting for Floyd 'cause I hated Judah. Then, I remember admiring how Floyd reacted to Judah's blatant fouling in the ring. After that fight, Floyd's stock in my eyes went up. But a lot has happened since then.
That's really it... no more, no less.
-
Tito, I get what your saying but its more about the Ppv buys that's impressive. The guy may be a lousy ambassador in your eyes but Fans/People are still buying his PPV's in record numbers.
It's pretty cut and dry with no way around. Fans make him the highest earner. The detractors and so called haters are OBVIOUSLY in the overwhelming minority .That's not used car salesman trickery. It's the detractors that are trying to sell you that No one wants to watch Floyd he isint a draw etc.
you cant argue his PPV buys its cut.
and dry

Re: Mayweather Vs Ortiz Supposedly 1.2 mill Buys
To be fair Floyd is awesome and deserves the success hard work always deserves success.
