Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
According to Fat Dan:
After the fight with Mormeck, Thompson will be the mandatory challenger for Wlad's IBF crown.
"In July 2008, Thompson had a mandatory shot against Klitschko in Germany and, although he gave him the most competitive fight of any of his defenses, Klitschko stopped him in the 11th round"
I figure Wlad stops him in about 7 rounds in the rematch, which should happen early next year.

It's not that, I'd just rather see Wlad face Arreola or Tarver.

I gotta agree with that, i'd say Arreola might have a slim shot of winning out of the 3, Thompson has no chance, and Tarver would get pulverized. (but that might be fun to watch)
But anyway, I reckon we'll see Wlad-Tiger II.

Yeah at least with Arreola you know he'll give his all & should provide some excitement. Tarver can fight & although I'd still favour Wlad over him I think he'd be just as, if not more competitive than Thompson imo

Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
Has Thompson fought anyone noteworthy since Klitschko? He must be almost 40 by now as well, can't imagine actually being excited to watch this. Wlad will probably retire without ever having been in a good fight, which isn't entirely his fault but still quite sad.

All Thompson did the first fight was put his hands in front of his face and throw about 10 punches a round that didn't land. What's he gonna do different this time? Nothing that I can see.
I havn't been able to decide if the HW division is the worst it's ever been the last 5 years, or the Klitschko bros are just so good, that they dominate everyone, perhaps it's a combination of both.
What seems the strangest to me is after about the last 50+ years of dominating the sport of boxing, there aren't any great black Heavyweights around anymore.

Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
It all comes down to the grassroots level. I know it isn't a popular opinion with many, but the best athletic big men just aren't getting into fighting any more imo. Nothing will ever convince me that either Klitschko is "just to good", when you compare them with fighters who were around up until about 10-15 years ago. Agreed on the Thompson fight to, the fact that he has basically had as much success as anyone against Wlad (without knocking him out of course;D) just cements this for me. Klitschko probably could have iced everyone he's ever fought if he had some fire in him.
-
I just don't understand how Wlad can justify fighting a guy who put in such a poor peformance against him last time and made it such a boring fight. He should never get a title shot again because of that. Mormeck is getting stopped in the mid rounds no doubt and so would Thompson. Wlad seriously needs to up the competition level because I can't be fucked watching him fight bums for the next 5 years.
I do agree out of the heavyweights Tarver and Arreloa would be better than Mormeck and Thompson. Even Tarver and Arreloa would struggle though IMO. They are too small to make any impact on Wlad. Arreloa maybe could land a big right but I highly doubt that would happen.
I honestly can't see any heavyweight for the next 2-3 years coming even close to Wlad. Haye had the opportunity and ability to but he completely bitched out which was a shame and it really lowered my opinion of him.
I think the only heavyweights in the future who could potentially have a good go at a faded Wlad would be; Helenius, Dimitreko and Fury. Albeit that they can on improving as fighters and get some good wins and experience under their belt. They all have potential IMO to be champions. The main reason why I have picked these three fighters is mainly their size. I just don't see how a smaller fighter is going to beat Wlad these days. Wlad has improved a lot since his early career knockouts and I don't see that happening again any time soon.
I think for Helenius, Fury and Dimintreko it's all about timing. If they have this currently Wlad they have no chance. Wlads superior boxing ability is miles above all of their abilities. But he can't stay like the way he is forever and when he does start to fade IMO it's got to be one of these three to beat him. And Povetkin will never be risked against Wlad or Vitali IMO. He's not big enough for them either and would get stopped IMO.

Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
I might be being a little optimistic but I feel there is some potential talent coming up:
Fury
Helenius
Pulev
Mitchell
Perez
Mansour
Etc etc
I wouldn't mind seeing Solis in with either Klitschko again though

Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
well Povetkin doesn't want to face him, Chisora lost to Fury, Fury is still happy facing domestic level fighters, so there's not really anyone left

Fury is young and building himself into a good fighter. He's still got a lot to learn and looks better each time he gets in the ring. Why risk getting beaten now by Wlad which is inevitable at this stage of his career! Give him time, he's picking it up in terms of advancing his career. He's only 23 and that's young for a heavyweight nowadays. Imagine him in 2-3 years time hes going to be a great heavyweight.

he hasn't beaten anyone to give the indication that he's going to be a GREAT HW, a somewhat decent one yes, but you can't make such claims until he actually steps it up
-
Tony gave a good effort last time out, Wlad actually had to work for that win. I never understood Thompson's corner acting like he was dying out there just playing defense and throwing arm punches...I see the same result but earlier Wlad TKO 7. It should be interesting because Wlad has only had 2 rematches (Byrd & Brewster).
I would LOVE for Wlad to fight Tarver and Arreola, its a shame Povetkin is such a punk.
-
Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
I believe Thompson is the mandatory so if Wlad wants to keep his belt he is required to face him. The IBF had a four-man tournament and Thompson won by default when Chambers opted out.
Don't forget Bermain Stiverne and the winner of the Boz and Povetkin. If the Boz upset Povetkin, that's actually would be a decent fight too.
-
Povetkin-Stiverne would be a hell of a match up for a title shot.
I don't think Wlad will have issues with any of the fighters mentioned though...the guy is just on another level.

I think in terms of the crock of shit heavyweights that are around these days he has potential to be seen as a great amongst the fellow heavyweights that fight nowadays. Don't get me wrong he's no Ali or Tyson etc, but I do think in the near future he has the potential to be the best.
However that does show the lack of ability that the heavyweight devision has. I don't see how it's going to get better in the future either. It's a boring weightclass nowadays. Fury brings some character to it and I wish him the best in developing his career. I would love to see him as a world champion one day and I think within 2-3 years he could well be.
I do agree that he needs to step up the competition till we can properly judge him , but so far so good IMO. As I said before he is still young for a heavyweight and I think by 2012 we will see him in with some good fighters.

You're counting out the Boz.

That's 100% possible. He hasn't done all that much in his career and this is by far his biggest test, so we'll see.

All I know is that 'The Boz' was the guy Vitali trained to fight before Johnson got injured and pulled out of the Lewis fight. Also 'The Boz' got stopped by Jameel McCline in 2003.
Looking at his record his best wins are: a TKO 2 vs Cliff Couser, TKO 2 vs Roman Greenberg, and a UD vs Oliver McCall. He's 6'3, has a good reach at 81", and his weight fluctuates anywhere from 245 (in '07) to 223 (in '09) to 231 (his last fight). 35 wins and 26 KO's is decent but its not vs a high pedigree of fighter.

Is he going to break his own record? Its like the 80th time he's done it. All that time registering to use the forum for 1 post each time, sad

Yea, he'll come to win against Povetkin and I believe he can do it, but it's more gut than logic.

Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
You can put big red frilly bows on it and adorn it in gold but coming of a set up farce like Mormeck this is a pos. In an odd way this makes me think even less of Haye ???
-
Re: Tony Thompson to get a rematch with Wlad Klitschko
It will be interesting to see how David Price does on Nov 19th against Mcdermott. His amateur pedigree is patchy but he is a big guy who can really punch. Would love to see him in with Fury who doesn't seem to be a big hitter. Price is big enough to mix it with Wlad but miles behind in experience so maybe one for the future. There is Helenius who price lost on points to in 2005 in the amateurs but other than that the only real heavyweight with potential that may bring back some excitement in the future is super heavyweight Anthony Joshua and he is competing in next years Olympics. So probably will turn pro 2013 by which time Wlad will probably retire.

Thompson won a couple of rounds in the first fight and attempted more punches than basically any Wlad opponent of the last 5 years. And unlike Chagaev, Ibragimov, Chambers, etc....., he didn't run.
Tarver would get KTFO'd early and provide no resistance.
Arreola though he does give his all, didn't seem to do too well versus Vitali. He threw only 330 punches or something like that. Which is pathetic. It isn't much more than Haye threw against Wlad.

Vitali gave Criscoball a pretty bad beating for 10 rounds before his corner stopped it. I'm thinking Wlad puts Arreola away much earlier.
Thompson gets crushed in the rematch, Wlad won't be playing grab ass with him this time.
As for Tarver, the only consolation for him would be, he should get a great payday if a fight with Wlad ever happens.
cheers Capt.
