I heard on the radio a little while ago, and I'm just sitting here stunned. Apparently he may have committed suicide, which just makes it all a little harder to take in. He's done so much for Welsh football on and off the pitch, and just feel so sorry for his two sons.
yes suicide. Stunned
Don't know anything about his personal life - was he married, kids ??
Yes seemed to have it all and looked relaxed yesterday on TV reminiscing winning the title with Leeds.
right - obviously something is going to come out then
gambler ?? am just speculating cos it don't make sense :-\
Gary Speed R I P a great WELSHMAN .
Met Him a few times Lovely Man. RIP Gary.
Sad news indeed!
Very strange, one you couldn't have predicted- goes to show you don't know what goes on behind closed doors.
Thoughts to his family & friends.
Very sad to hear....Bellamy couldn't even play today because of it.
You know, I feel genuinely saddened by this news.
I've been reading some articles online and a couple have hinted at depression being the cause. There's also rumours around that The Sun were about to print a revealing story about him, they flatly deny this.
It just makes no sense at all. Apparently he'd even made plans to appear on Football Focus again next month after appearing on it yesterday. He then went to The Man U game with Shearer then went home and hung himself.
Such a sad sad story.
So sad.
The rumour is that there were a few career ruining stories about to come out in the press about him. Don't know what could have been that bad. But if that's true, it's even more sad. (sad he felt he had to kill himself over newspapers)
He was on a football show yesterday, laughing and joking about the weekend football.
And career wise, he was on the verge of something very special with Wales.
I've kind of avoided commenting too much on this side of it at the moment, as I had been comparing recent performances to the kind of optimism I had when Hughesie was in charge. It'll be something that we never get to find out now, and a lot of the youngsters that he has blooded will need some very careful management for the next few friendlies and going into the next qualifying.
As for rumours, I find it hard to believe that they are anything but that. The reality is that we are likely never to know now, as any paper so callous as to print such stories really should be boycotted and closed down.
Very sad news. He was a credit to the game and in an era of spoilt prima donnas seemed a really genuinely nice guy. Great manager too and very considered pundit. Thoughts must go out to his family, R.I.P
It is sad news.
Shocking news, as many on here have said, I also watched him on Footy Focus on saturday morning, and all seemed well with him, not troubled at all.
Got into work this morning and a couple of peeps have said he was having affairs and it was about to be released in the press, and this could of been the reason behind him doing what he done :-\
Such a shame and such a waste of talent, he managed to turn the Welsh national team around in less than a year, and thats some feat !
Thoughts go out to his family
rumours like that were bound to come out, i heard the news and my immediate reaction was that he must have done something that he didnt want everone to know about, so for people to jump to that concusion is inevitable
i dont believe that is the case, unless he has done something really really bad, to be in the position he was in he must have been a very strong level headed man and to kill yourself because of an affair is far fetched
depression is much more believable,
perhaps going from having such a long successful football carear, playing infront of massive crowds for almost 2 decades to having a part time job triggered something
just speculating tho, what do i know
Well, I am distraught to see the news. It doesn't matter why he did it. It was a personal decision. It was an extreme option, but on the one hand I do respect it.
There has been talk that "The Sun" had been about to do an expose of some kind about him, and if this is the case then they should all be very very ashamed of themselves.
I'm trying to cut down on the kind of virulent retribution that I want to give some people, but where better to stick the gutter press than in the fucking gutter.
This is it, bloody shocking !
Thing is, do the press give a shit if you were to have an affair? Were they bothered about Jim and the crushgate which rocked Saddo's, absolutely not, If my neighbour was to have an affair would they report that, NO.
If this is the case, then the press are to blame for this tragic event
what was crushgate ??
I must have missed that one
Why are you distraught? You couldn't understand that I found it sad when Steve Jobs died, why would you be distraught about a footballer dying?
P.S - There is something very odd about this whole thing, but if he did top himself then my take is that it was a selfish act that has detroyed the lives of 2 Children, so I certainly don't 'respect it'
Probs wont like me for this but here it is:
I kinda need advice. Bad times.
The main rumour is that he was gay and that there were stories, including evidence that he was.
It is horrific if he has killed himself over a newspaper story, but as has been said, it couldn't have been that bad, he would have got through it.
Welsh & Gay...that's a double negative and would have finished off any decent bloke IMO
Job Biscuit (Bloody legend for Leeds though)!!!
eh eh!!!
I still can't get my head round it. When famous people die and there are public showings of emotion, I usually don't get it. Now I get it.
He was a man who always conducted himself in such a dignified way. A weakness mentally is something that many people will cover up, and this will often be something that others will never even know. When they put up the facade of calm and confidence, then it can actually hide everything that is going on underneath. The problem is that the longer the facade is held the further the distance becomes between how and individual really feels and behaves in their own company, and the projected personality itself.
However bad the situation was, it wasn't worth suicide.
I agree, a friend who I use to play football with and talked to when we were catching the same train committed suicide by jumping off a building. Found out later he had marriage problems, but he had a 14 year old son and for his sake he should have stayed a live. Obviously these people are not seeing straight and are highly stressed and confused, just wished he talked to someone about it.
Rumours circulating that he was having an affair with a retired Premiership player :o
Didnt have him down as gay!!
I know somebody who knows him well. And he said there is no way he was a gayer and no way that the threat of anewspaper story would make him top himself.
Ryan Giggs was quoted as saying his thoughts are with Gary Speed's wife at this time.
For fuck's sake Giggsy, he's only been dead a few hours!
