Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
I have never really understood Alan Partridges obsession with James Bond. Bond was a good idea for a couple of films, but after about 400 it has become tired, formulaic and pointless. It has always astonished me how James Bond goes on and on. Any other franchise gets old after the 3rd film at best and there is Bond who never stops. Also, Daniel Craig has to be the worst James Bond ever. Much worse than that Australian one whose name escapes me. I really wish they would have James Bond die in a terrorist attack and to just be done with it all.
Who else doesn't get James Bond?

So predictable. I don't understand why people keep going back for more. Is it because it is every 3 years and people forget that they have seen it all before and was done far more charismatically by Connery half a century ago.
I don't mind the Connery Bond actually.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Bond is the dog's bollocks, it's a British Filmatic Institue, and the greatest spy known to man. I only wish the was 400 films or even books wrote for bond, alas this is not the case.
Connery, Moore, George Lazenby, Dalton, Brosnan, Craig are your Bonds. My personal favourite was Brosnan, pulled off Bond really well.
All other spy characters were born from the Bond franchise. We have alot to thank Bond for.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
I agree with Miles. Bond sucks. Akso I hate pretty much all spy films so I resent the iea I should be thankful toward Bond for anything.
I think the worl would actually be a better place without cinema. People would still be reading books, so society would be more intelligent and conversation more sophisticated.
Without actors we would never have had the birth of celebrity culture which has led ultimately to such human endangering tragidies such as reality tv and X Factor.
Fuck Bond, fuck cinema.
Hail to books.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
I dont particularly care for Bond, I wouldnt go to the cinema to watch a Bond film, wouldnt rent one either but on a Sunday afternoon with a belly full of meat potato and gravy it serves its purpose.
A couple of hours entertainment, no thought required, half asleep on the sofa, thats how I use Bond films, thats how I use most films.
Im sure I'll watch one over the next two weeks.

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
I think it is a bit harsh to condemn all cinema as I think there have been a lot of great films over the years. Over recent weeks I have been re watching my Hitchcock collection and you can't argue against the quality of films like Strangers on a train or North by Northwest. Just brilliant. They are not the same character doing the same things again and again, though Hitchcock does like his innocent man on the run quite a lot.
I do despise modern celebrity culture though and all the crappy TV that exists these days. Society is extremely dumbed down and you see it in the plethora of low brow and downright stupid films we get these days. The plots are skin thin and its all about the CGI. I haven't been to the pictures in ages and for good reason. Indiana Jones 4 really let me down.
Books are definitely a far richer experience than film. This year I have worked my way through a number of Dostoevsky novels and the depth and scope of the writing is at times just astonishing. In many ways it is quite humbling as I can't write like that. I draw much more on the simple, say it direct Orwell style approach to expression. Likewise, film by its very nature has to be relatively simple, but popular films of several decades ago seemed to have a linguistic richness and depth that is all too often missing from today's popular films.

The films, of course were derived from the books, so really we should blame the books therefor your comments mean jackshit as your contradicting yourself ;)

Ah, someone talking sense finally :)

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Memphis has it right there. They are films that you expect on the telly over the holiday period and with a belly full of festive grub.
I don't actually hate Bond, but I just struggle to see the point in it. I just don't get it.

The fact that you called it the pictures means that I dont doubt this for a second ;D

I never said the books were bad only the movies. Actually though I would much rather read about Ian Flemings real life exploits during the war coordinating 30 Assualt Unit and organising daring thefts of intelligence from German bunkers and military HQ's. That is what his Bond novels were loosely based upon and those stories are far more interesting than any modern Bond movie.

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
The Roger Moore ones all bring back memories of when I was a kid. I enjoy catching them on TV now and again.
The modern Bond would get owned by Jason Bourne IMO.

I'd like to see Jason Bourne surf an arctic tsunami with a car bonnet

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
The Bourne films are modern action films that I actually quite like. They do something a little different and they mix it up stylistically. But you wouldn't want to see 28 of them made over the next five decades. Bond was alright for a couple of films, but I don't understand why people keep going back for more every couple of years. They do well and thus keep getting made, but it confuses me how this particular franchise keeps going when it is nowhere on the level of something like the Bourne films which at least the first time out are exciting.

Ya should try reading some Clive Cussler, his main character, Dirk Pitt, is based on his own exploits and of NUMA explorations

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Never ever sat through a full Bond film. The idea of it bores the shit out of me.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Use to watch them all but cannot stand Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton versions. Sean was good but have to admit love the new bond films and the Aston Martin. He looks cool.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Dont know if the English got the series ?
But Maxwell Smart would find a way to fuck up any James Bond.

You do realise that Bond made all of those Cliches are ones made by the Franchise itself?
Like anything that's been running for DECADes it is going to become a parody of itself... the Craig Bonds atleast seem to have freshened things up, much harder like Connery was and more Bourne than having 'Gadgets' (I didn't spot any in he new films? He had a defibulator in his car... and a smart phone?) I also don't get why you checked off 'bond'... it's the bond franchise... it's not likely to have Ethan Hunt or Jason Bourne as the protagonist is it now?!
Other than Goldeneye the Brosnan ones were terrible... Roger Moore is good in an ironic Alan Partridge type of awful way and Connery was in some bloody good films. I thought the Dalton ones were decent... much more violent than most bonds... a definetly product of the 80s. I was underwhelmed by Quantam of Solice, wasn't much to love or hate... but Casino Royal was a great film.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Agreed Casino Royal was a great film and certainly made me back a fan.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
The last Bond film I saw had Pierce Brosnan facing off against some short Korean general. Then following some plastic surgery the little short Korean man became a tall, white English toff. I wasn't sure if I was watching a Bond film or one of those Not Another parody films. Either way I decided never to watch another one.

Watch the new Bond, Daniel Graig, he is good, the films are excellent.

I once made the huge mistake of putting on a Sean Connery accent, and telling this girl to sit on my face.
Never again

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Seriously though, I like James Bond. It's a tradition. Not meant to be intellectual movie fare... not meant to be realistic. Matter of fact, one of the things about Bond films is seeing just how outrageous they get with their stunts. I hope they continue, although I'm not too fond of Craig's Bond.

I think he is the best and Sean second. Moore is the worst.

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Believe it or not, I have never seen a James Bond movie. As far as I know, I have never even seen a part of one.
My father and I went to a movie- Chariots of the Gods, I bet- and there was a poster for a Bond movie, a guy in a suit with a gun, beautiful woman, sports car, etc... I thought it presented a good case for our next movie. My father said "that garbage will rot your mind." To this day I avoid 'action' movies.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Expendables is a movie that will rot your brain. Just crap.

I like Moore and Craig, cannot stand Connery. Have a friend, an Old punk who use to work as a technician at one of the Studios, said Roger Moore was really down to earth and a very funny guy. Even Craig has retained some of that humour, but nobody can raise an eyebrow like Moore.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Doctor Kananga thinks bond is a rotter.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Moore is a nice guy but the comedy version of James is not good. Bond was stoic and heavy drinker which was played well by Sean and Craig.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Bonds previous to Craig would not let themselves get poisoned, beaten up, or fallen for a woman who double-crosses him. Craig likes to run around and show his physique... but the other Bonds were more suave and debonair.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
The new James Bond with Craig are quite stunning. I can watch them for the grandiose filming. Craig is a good actor. I didn't know anyone in England didn't like Bond, I guess that's racist of me. How could anyone not like Connery. When he had his shirt unbuttoned it looked like he had spiders all over his chest.
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
The new Bond movie "No Time To Die" has been postponed due to the Coronavirus. They think the title is insensitive Just change the title to something less sensitive like "Quarantine Of Solace"...."A Flu to a Kill"... Suggestions welcome
-
Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Just come to this thread. Can hardly call them rubbish.
I grew up with Roger Moore at the cinema playing Bond so he's my favourite. Loved the litlle quips and the raised eyebrow. Great films. At the same time I loved the Connery ones that were shown on TV (usually xmas day at 3.10pm after the queens speech) and thought he was cool aswell. Always entertaining films you can't deny that.
But then Dalton - no thanks.
And I have never seen a Brosnan Bond movie either as can't stand him.
However Craig came to the role and made him cool again with an edge to him - though I've still to figure out what the hell Quantum of Solace was all about. Skyfall is up there as one of the best for me.
Tough act to follow is Daniel Craig for whoever it may be. Hopefully not Tom Hiddlestone.

Re: Who thinks James Bond is rubbish?
Anyone into the books? My mates a massive Bond fan, loves the books, loves the films. Always said that the screen Bond, until Craig was never really Bond. Connery was closest otherwise because Bond was a bit of a cunt, stands to reason I guess.
