If it's not Pacquiao or Martinez than Guerrero should get the fight. Got no problem with it.
Really? A 135-pounder coming off of a year of injury rehab? I'd say it's total bullshit. Granted, none of the non-Pac/non-Martinez options are very enticing but at least Alvarez is *bigger* than Floyd. (You'd think he'd be a significantly bigger sell too.)
I wish Floyd and Pac would both retire.
Guerrero or Alvarez vs Mayweather is total bs. For all of their ability which is impressive, they aren't truly elite fighters. Guerrero just doesn't have all the core components to deal with Floyd. He has a lot of basic things that layman people will think will cause problems for Mayweather, but in actuality he is too much of an orthodox boxer. He's very good at it, solid defense, good combinations, educated jab. These things however are level below what is needed. You watch Hopkins, prime Roy Jones, Mayweather, Pacquiao. They have a fluidity that allows them to get more length, speed, flexibility in the things they can do. Guerrero because he is so focused on the "traditional" basics of boxing that he doesn't use his shoulder enough in his cross which means it's quite a bit shorter and less powerful than it should be. His jab is good, but a guy like Mayweather will be able to counter it. A lot of people are impressed by the decent speed and good fundamentals, but you need more than that against Mayweather. Pacquiao might not have the same technique Guerrero does, but he knows how to get more out of his body, and though his boxing technical skills aren't as good he gets much more out of his body mechanics than Guerrero. This is something so many guys underestimate about guys like Klitschko, Mayweather, Pacquiao etc. it's that extra body awareness that allows them to put a little more in a punch, to move their feet in just such a way that they avoid what's coming at them. Watch Timothy Bradley lots of times he has his hands in bad positions, and he still slips out of trouble even against really fast, good boxers, and its because he's learned to keep his keep moving while bobbing and weaving, and he has a good sense of his opponent, but for them it's like shooting a moving target with a hand gun. I am starting to get off the specific topic, but I am just trying to emphasize the point that Guerrero or Alvarez won't stand a chance against Floyd just like Ortiz didn't, but even Ortiz had power and was much more dynamic athletically than Guerrero.
All in all hopefully Pacquiao will take the fight. Sergio Martinez would likely face the same problem these others guys would against Floyd for different reasons, but at least he is blindingly fast and he has become something of a knockout puncher.
Guerrero's a good 135 fighter but its a waste of time for Floyd. Should be fighting Pacman or Martinez even Cotto. Not Guerrero.
Guerrero can be outstanding at his best, but he would need to fight out of his skin to even be competitive with Floyd.
In saying that, I think Guerrero stands a better chance than Alvarez.
But I hope Pac tells Aram that he wants Floyd next
complete garbage fight, Guerrero would be lucky to get a big fight against Bradley, Khan, Peterson, or even Rios, no way in hell should he get a fight against Mayweather at 147, but of course VD is fine with it lol, I say Mayweather should fight Martinez, Pacquiao, or even Kirkland deserves a shot more than Guerrero and it's a bigger challenge
Do Not Want!
Pretty sure Guerrero would get so outclassed by Floyd
I wanted Alvarez but I guess he is too dangerous for Money, he is doing a Manny Pacquia now.
Yawnnnnnn
Guerrero hasn't done anything even remotlely close to justify a mega fight. Although he's doing a good job of keeping this rumor going.
Guerrero is a 3 division champion. He's not a fighter without skills or credentials. Like I said he's not the first option I prefer. Or even the 2nd. But I don't see any else being that much of a better option. Guerrero is trying to prove himself against the fighter in the sport today. And he's being bad mouthed for it. Un fucking believable
Rubbish fight, simple. Year layoff and best win against face first Katsidis. Mayweather beats Guerrero without breaking sweat.
Guerrero should concentrate on gettin himself fit and manning up against Maidana before he continues to spout off about taking Mayweather.
I still hold hope of a Mayweather Pacquiao fight!!! Come On!!!
it's not a knock on Guerrero it would be more of a knock on Mayweather, there are tougher challenges at 147 and 154 than Guerrero, Robert needs to take on someone with a pulse at at 135 or 140, the biggest win he's had of late is Katsidis the same Katsidis that Burns just beat, I say Guerrero should fight someone like Rios, Demarco, or even Gamboa at 135 or fight Bradley, Peterson, Khan, or any other top 140 lber, Mayweather has plenty of options to pick from he has Canelo, Kirkland, Cotto, Martinez (even though he's scheduled to fight next month), Alexander, etc.
Guerrero is a solid fighter with a game but he brings absolutely natas to offend or trouble Mayweather at given weight and respected points in career. Floyd had his gimme, and that was a guy who could feign 154. Floyd needs to insist on better IF this is a consideration and stop playing the fans for suckers.
This is a horrible fight and I would have almost no interest in watching it if it gets made.
If mayweather loses half his fans for this bull shit fight I won't be surprised. I honestly will be one of them.
Guerrero and Alvarez aren't ready for Mayweather if they ever will be. Ortiz wasn't close to ready for Mayweather and he at least has one legit win over a top ranked boxer at 147. Neither Guerrero or Alvarez has one win over a top guy at that weight class. Would Guerrero even beat Ortiz or Berto? I don't believe so. Would Guerrero even beat Bradley? I don't think so. Guerrero is lucky if he gets this pay day and more power to him for taking on a challenge, maybe its not his fault, but he doesn't deserve it.
Sergio Martinez at 154 is the fight to be made if it is not Manny Pacquiao. Hell, frankly, I see Sergio Martinez versus Floyd Mayweather at 154 more competitive than Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather at 147. The other fights that would make sense are the Ortiz/Berto II winner or Miguel Cotto.
Alvarez is 22. He's been champion for less than a year. He should clean up the junior middleweight division and learn his craft first before facing someone like Floyd. Not that I'd put him down for not taking the chance for 7 figures, of course.
My question is who can Floyd fight? Martinez is fighting in March and won't be ready for may, especially to make that fight big enough. If Arum won't let Cotto or Pacquiao face Floyd, then I don't see better options than Geurrero or Alvarez. I mean there are equally good opportunities out there, but not better ones. I mean Arum has Marquez, Bradley, Pacquiao, and Cotto all around his finger, and Amir Khan just lost a close fight, and he deserves less than Guerrero to go up against Mayweather.
Not that the result would be in doubt, but Cotto is a free agent now. That's a better fight than Canelo or Guerrero. Martinez would gladly pay Macklin a step aside fee for the chance to face Floyd. I guarantee that. I'm not even sure the Macklin/Martinez fight has been actually signed due to the confusion surrounding the title situation and the WBC.
I agree with VD. I'm really surprised this fight has been made. Guerrero has very little name outside the hardcore but he's probably a far tougher opponent than virtually anyone else out there for Floyd.
I've said many times that I thought Guerrero could be the best of the lightweights, and maybe have the beating of guys like Marquez, Rios, Khan and Bradley.
Floyd is too soon but if he comes to the fight not fully prepared and expecting an easy night I'd give Guerrero a far better shot than most of sticking to a gameplan and frustrating Floy.
I reckon he loses a surprisingly competitive 12 rounder where Floyd looks the worst he has looked since Castillo, gets called out by Max or Larry and storms off without giving an interview.
Guerrero is a top p4p guy just waiting for his opportunity imo.
Guerrero has a little bit less than no chance of winning even a round against floyd. Heck im not even sure if i'd pick him to beat ortiz or berto either for that matter
BUT he's a lightweight Bilbo. I know Floyd will want a bigger challenge than this..The only time has done this was against Marquez and he's an exception because he is proven awesome. Plus it was a return from a lay-off. Floyd will go Canelo over Guererro..watch.
this fight IMO is just as bad and just as disappointing as Mosley/Pacquiao and Pacquiao/Clottey
Oh dear. This in an unfortunate choice of opponent. I have nothing against Guerrero, who I happen to think is a very good fighter, but he hasn't made a name for himself yet and most certainly is not WW.
Shame on Mayweather if this turns out to be who he is fighting. He deserves his criticism a lot of the time and he will no doubt get a lot more for this.
He's a very good fighter. A very good lightweight. Who has been out with an injury and surgery for the past year. And who has never been in the ring with a world class fighter (though there are several world class lightweight and junior welterweight fighters I think he could beat, preferably after a tuneup).
Mayweather will end up fighting Canelo anyway, so this discussion is kind of academic.
Floyd Mayweather Jr jail term delayed for May fight | Mail Online
Going by reports today, his jail sentance has been postponed until June 1st, so this can possibly set-up the chance of the Manny fight in May. Makes perfect sense as neither boxer has been penciled in for a fight yet. Just saying.
What im I saying, the fight will never happen
I'm a fan of Guerrero, I really am, but if this fight happens, or a fight with Canelo, NO ONE should be happy about it. Neither of these guys is ready to step into the ring with Mayweather. Plus, Mayweather just had a gimme with Ortiz, and should be stepping up to the plate himself. It's ridiculous that everyone keeps letting him get away with this crap.
Obviously a fight with Pac isn't going to happen, so the only 2 guys Mayweather should be fighting is Martinez or Cotto. They are guys that would actually be a challenge for him, and are guys who have earned the right to a big money fight.
Its noooo reason Robert should get this fight period. Id rather him fight khan in that case -_-
my point exactly, I already said it's more of a knock on Mayweather rather than on Guerrero, Robert has better fights for him at 135 and 140 rather than face a bigger and technically better Mayweather 2 divisions north, he should just fight Rios at 140 but leave it to VD to try and make his dude the victim
VD - you may be confused. The problems with this fight aren't Guerrero's fault. He should make his $ and no one will blame him for taking the fight. The problem is that he isn't close to good enough or proven to face the top p4p fighter in the world 12 pounds north of his present division. Guerrero isn't even ranked in Mayweather's own division or the division below him, and frankly, with wins at lightweight against Kastidis, Escobedo, and Casamayor (where he was put down once), he hasn't exactly done very much at lightweight either. All together, there is nothing at all to suggest he is ready for Mayweather at 147.
Can you at least for one day worth of posting try and be objective? Who keeps letting Floyd get away with what crap? Has Cotto spoken up about wanting Floyd? I haven't heard shit from him..Martinez yes and I will be the first to say that's the only fight worth a damn outside of Pacquiao.
But Ortiz wasn't a gimme. Floyd sat and watched the number 3 Welterweight at the time Berto take on Ortiz. Obviously Money had Berto in his sights but rightly took on the winner who looked BEAST in that fight Ortiz. A man who is 3rd best Welter in the world, weighs 160 on fight night and a southpaw who apparently Floyd likes to avoid is a gimme? Gtfo of here, seriously...we'll see for sure about Ortiz in the rematch but at the time it was a good fight to make
If he fights Guerrero though, i'm with you - and nobody will let him off the hook and rightly so. Its a bullshit fight at this stage
Alt - I'll be objective. Ortiz was a gimme. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. In your response to Diane, you explained well why Ortiz was given the fight with Floyd and why Ortiz wasn't a poor choice in opponent: (1) he defeated the #3 ranked welterweight in Berto and (2) he was the highest ranked welterweight outside of Pacquiao and Mayweather. However, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you are missing a crucial step in logic: those facts don't equate to Ortiz being good competition or a challenge for Mayweather. This is not the same as stating that Ortiz was a bad choice considering the options. It wasn't as good as Martinez or Pacquiao or other fighters above his weight class, but it was an easy fight. There was no daring to be great in choosing Ortiz as an opponent. I hate to be vindictive, but I said as much prior to the fight.
Quite frankly, it should have been called out by more of the boxing public. The outcome was obvious to me much like the outcome was with Mayweather's fight against Hatton at 147 and his fight with Marquez at 147. Ortiz drew with Lamont Peterson and quit against Marcos Maidana. These losses were impossible to ignore; they don't just disappear with a win against Berto. I'm as big of a fan of Maidana and Peterson (and Peterson looked improved against Khan last time out) as anyone, but not being able to defeat either one division below Mayweather is indicative of the fact that Ortiz would be way out of his depth against Mayweather.
Can we agree that if Floyd faces Alvarez at 54 or 50, he should be really be facing Sergio Martinez, and that the Guerrero fight is a joke?
I believe what people want from Floyd that it appears he has failed to give in the past is striving for greatness. Ask yourself what opponent out there would be a challenge for Floyd in or around his weight class?
Of course, there may be a point where there aren't any - see the Klitschko connundrum. However, unlike Manny and Floyd, the Klitschkos fight every single person put in front of them. There has not been one person either hasn't seen. Not one. For Manny, it's Floyd, for Floyd there have been quite a number of fighters that for whatever reason, promoter politics, money wasn't right etc., he hasn't seen.
I will again call you out on your forgetfulness Miles/Gandalf whatever you wanna go by these days. You said you would have immense respect for Mayweather if he signed the Mosley fight..All of you fuckin did. "Oh he's ducking Mosley".."he'll never sign to fight him".."I'll believe it when the bell rings"...he did and whooped him..now he was "ancient". Pleeease GTFO of here with that shit..some of you can't even hear yourselves. It's embarrassing.:-\
