Fighting on friday

Hey, i am fighting on friday infront of 800ish people at a club called the willows in salford. Amongst the guests will be ricky hatton, anthony crolla and craig watson, the referee is jamie moore

It is the last night of the club and the next day it closes down and moves a couple of miles down the road to a town called irlam, so its a bigish occasion for the city

I am 37 years old and in good shape and this is my first fight. My opponent is 27 years old and is a fitness instructor and it is his first fight also.

I am a bit thicker set around the bottom half of my body than him, i definately have stronger legs. He is wider top half and we are about the same height

We both box (as opposed to fight) and he is a little more come forward than me, i tend to box off the back foot

Im starting to feel the nerves a bit now, sleep was affected a bit last night, just really raring to go

Cover up well, and fire off hard shots. If you can push up your body weight through your legs into your punch, you'll make this guy see birdies. Use bobbing head movements and remember to land the jab.

Fighting on the backfoot, covering up well is key for when you get pushed to the ropes.

Well, spar lots. Practice makes perfect.

Relax of an evening in knowing you have prepared as well as you could of, dont get stuck in thinking in what ifs, or maybes at this stage. Take it out further now, tick some other boxes.

The fight will go as it will now, so relax in your mind. Smile to your self like you know you are going to win, your mind will begin to follow the que of the muscles in your face and relax you even more.

Air flowing and your easy thoughts are your best allies towards freedom of movement, breathe low and long like filling up up a tank from your hips or lower right up into your shoulders slow in, slow out, easy.

If you do have to think about the fight of an evening before sleep,do this in your mind; Prior to sleeping. Or any time.

Kick back relax, close eyes ,get into that rhythm of breathing, go in slow take your time relaxing sections of your body out and think; top of head relax come down through the temples relax,mind, eyes, cheeks, jaw, tongue, neck, shoulders ,arms to fingers, chest to the floor etc etc all the way down to your toes; keep breathing well, deep and slow but not forced imagine your breath is bringing in a golden peaceful relaxing feeling to each body section as you.

Now visualize the day of the event, get ready, leaving home for the venue,catch every detail ,even idle chat in the car see whos in there with you, all the turns everything you will see on the way, walk in the door, nod at few friends smile your way through,fell the smile in your eyes too ,cause this is what you want and its here. Go to the rooms even on the way in, lightly stretch out some joints, your neck and head slowly side to side, revolve joints etc, pull your arms around,fingers wiggle, deep breathing all the time, get in there; warm up your joints with some fast movements, stretch,legs,do some low slow squats nothing big just what you are used to, loosen up, dont miss anything out, get hands wrapped,each finger feel it happening feel the gloves getting shoved on, do some fast actions with your joints to warm them up and feel your arms become loose and snappy, Skippy, moving,throwing easy shots,no stiffness here, just free flowing, you do your ring walk in with your corner men, see all the people there, dont let some famous faces interrupt your thought now the time ,catch a few glances, smile your way in mate, head to your corner go under the ropes, hear the introductions size him up if you wish or dont even look at him until the ref pulls you together, Now you got him in your sights, so now visualize the fight as it will go. If you know this guys style and he is a come forward type you slip out on angles, skipping moving freely, tagging him and moving, making him pay for his every move,not being where he expects you to be, never going straight back, smiling inside your head behind your eyes all time, you feel loose and free cause you've got this one ;).You have won it. You can hear your cornner men around you, Visualize the reef holding your hand up and you take this first win, feel the elation and look around at all the smiles.

So once, you've done it all in your mind a few times you can know for a fact you are miles ahead of the opposition mate, everything will fall into place, you can relax and be free to be your best on the night.

i know ive prepared well, i am very fit and have nothing to worry about on that side of things, bit of light training tomorrow and a run and im comfortable ive done enough

just got the schedule and im on second to last, which will probly be about 11 o'clock which is a bit of a bummer coz ive got to be there for 7 to see the doctor, its a long time to be sitting about waiting

i might go there, see the doctor and leave for a bit, go back later. or i may try and relax and watch the other fights

have you fought before Andre?

Helped train alot of lads though a couple took out the world Kungfu title many years ago in Hong Kong.

just 2 days to go now and i actually feel very relaxed, i was more nervous a week or so ago but havent really felt it too much since

i had 2 good nights sleep last 2 nights and havent really thought about it that much

a week ago i couldnt get it out of my head

at the gym tonight for the last time, will do a bit on the bags and on the pads and then down to my non boxing gym and do some time on the treadmill, maybe swim a few lengths, sauna jacuzzi

but generally take it easy dont go too mad

Try to relax, nerves are good and are your friend embrace them and just give it your best, you cannot do anything more.

Its not happened yet andre, 1250 now i fight about 11pm

Everyone said it was the fight of the night and most said i was robbed but i doubt they would say anything else to my face

When i was leaving tho the bouncer said "your the guy who was robbed arent you" which makes me think i may have had a case

I get the dvd in a week so i can make my own mind up, i post it up when i do

One thing i learned tho is it is nothing like sparring, i consider myself a fit person and i can spar 10 rounds and still be fresh, afer the first round last night i was knackered

How did you feel you did after the fight, when the final bell went? I know you say it was close but did you feel you had done enough?

I felt i lost the first round, then i stepped it up in the second and was the aggressor all through the round but i did get caught with a few, at the same time i landed a few myself so its hard to say which way that went

I am sure i won the last round, i know he was tired, i threw a lot more punches and hardly got hit

Although it could have gone very different, it went so quick my memory is pretty hazey

I cant wait for the dvd now

it was white collar, and yeah i think 35 is the cut off date, but isnt there a senior am circuit?

i really dont have any background in boxing, i trained in a gym for about 6 months and once a week when i was 16 and thats about it until about 6 to 12 months ago

always loved boxing but played other sports, i really wish id have at least given it a go when i was younger

dont think it will be my last fight, i took on the hardest fight i could have for my first night and even if i wasnt robbed it sounded close, and we got a lot of praise for how technical the fight was compared to the others on the night

maybe i should reserve judgement till i see the dvd :)

Well done eric, i respect any man thats had the balls to stand up infront of a croud and fight with another guy whos trained to fight. dont worry about the record, anyone that knows boxing at all has seen a very talented fighter get raped on the decision before. a few losses at events like that dont mean nothing, it makes you wonder where the judges are looking at times, or maybe more like who they sat with at dinner?

Funny thing you mention the record, Wayne. There's been fighters like Emmanuel Augustus that have terrible records, yet are very nice fighters. Mayweather still maintains that Augustus was his toughest fight.

there has been a slight delay on the release of the dvd but im told it will be friday

My goal is to have at least one am fight, just so I can say I've done it.

But my fitness is a long, long way off being able to do it.

obviously there are lots of things i would do different in a second fight but if i had one bit of advice it would be dont underestimate the fitness you need

even if you were just doing 3 twos

its a lot harder work than i expected

got the dvd but its just one long file

anyone know how i would split it up into parts?

i was robbed by the way :)

Just upload the whole lot in one swoop, or does it have lots of different fights on?

theres 10 fights, its about an hour and a half

Try to edit it with Windows Movie Maker.

Or if you have a Mac, iMovie.
