Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Well fellas this is the rematch of what I thought was a pretty solid fight. Thompson gave a great account of himself and really was the last guy to touch Wlad up a bit. I don't think Tony has gotten any better, stronger, or faster, but his defense is always good, he's got a solid chin, he's got a good long jab, but will he fair any better than last time?
What does it mean if this time it lasts the distance? What if Wlad stops him earlier? Is there anyone out there that can truly challenge a Klitschko brother right now (especially Wlad)???

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Thompson is really getting up there in years, but he had more success than most in recent memory against Wlad, why not.
Unless Wlad loses, there is not much to take from it other than what we've known already.
That is: There is no meaningful competition at heavyweight.

There's no meaningful competition for WLADIMIR at heavyweight. There are very solid fights left to be made at heavyweight it's just a matter of consistency and timing. If a Prime Cris Arreola & a Ready Seth Mitchell were to meet that would be a great fight to watch

there is but he won't fight his brother ;D
Imagine the money they would draw if they faced eachother. :o

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
It's not a fight that interests me because the conclusion is foregone. I'll watch it to watch Wlad, like I'll watch Floyd versus to Cotto, foregone conclusion as far as the fight is concerned, but Floyd (and perhaps Cotto) are future hall of famers, so it's always fun.
The problem is I can't really imagine who I would prefer to see Wlad face that will actually fight him (Povetkin would be a natural choice, but he won't fight). The Pulev-Dimitrenko winner would be worth a fight, as would Boystov, Chisora, or Arreola.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Recycling the old challengers. I hear Solis who couldnt last 3 minutes with Vitali wants a rematch too. Next we'll hear Mormeck has got another crack and that will be the final nail in the coffin of heavyweight boxing.
-
Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
I thought Thompson made a poor effort the last time and am not expecting any better this time. I guess we just have to appreciate how good Wlad is above these challengers.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
So, a 40 year old journeyman with modest skills and no KO power is getting a rematch because... five years ago he was able to have a little success touching Wlad before being knocked unconcious? Despite having not had a high profile bout since? And who says the HW division sucks:confused:;D.

He's getting the fight cause he's Wlad's mandatory.
Prediction - I'll say Wladimir knocks him out in about 8-9 rounds.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Im not doing anything the day of the fight but still not going to watch it. I would seriously rather watch paint dry. I would rather watch an hour of dressage than this fight. I would rather watch fu/king jersey shore or sex in the city. I really would. I should put every penny I have and vote for Klit to win. I will probably only win 20 quid but even if I put ten grand down, I wouldnt be afraid of losing it.
Pointless, pointless fight, just like Mormec.
-
While there are not many credible challenges out there for wlad id at least like to see him fight someone else, even if the outcomes the same...give arreola a shot, hell ill take him fightin furry....
-
Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Wladimir will fight Arreola in the US after Thompson. At least that's the plan anyway.

Hahaha. I didnt think Thompson had fought anyone of note so just checked on boxrexc and the guy Thompson beat in an eliminator was Maurice Harris;D The same guy who lost to Jimmy Thunder and Larry Holmes in the 90's, and quit against Tye Fields. Holy man doesn't take much to be a mandatory I guess.
I'm not saying it's even a terrible opponent, and if they are looking to fight Arreola in the states afterward then fair enough. Not that Arreola has much of a chance either, but I think he would at least force some action out of Wlad and possibly give him some fits. Tonys absolute best chance is to make the fight a completely negative stinker he still loses, this fight sucks.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
I expect Wlad to stop him earlier than the last time they fought just judging from past form and Wlad's a smart fighter, plus if you look at when Wlad has had rematches he's done better in all of them.
Thompson vs Chambers was supposed to be the eliminator bout, but Chambers picked up an injury and they didn't end up fighting. To Tony's credit there's not a long line of folks wanting to fight him because he's bigger than Wlad, he's a southpaw, has a solid chin, good jab, and tough defense....he's not an easy boxer to beat......he's not exciting to watch either, but there's a distinct reason other top teir heavyweights aren't lining up to fight the guy.
Wlad KO/TKO 6-7

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
I don't see the point in this fight. I probably won't even bother watching.
The first fight wasn't even close and now a rematch with an even more ancient Thompson.
The Klits are becoming a bit sad.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
How does Wlad motivate himself to even train for these guys, especially as he has beaten them before?
-
Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Thompson's only chance is to go right after Vlad like he has nothing to lose and pray for that miracle home run punch. If he decides to box him then he goes to sleep within 8 rounds. Vlad vs Arreola will be interesting to see if Chris comes in shape.

They are contract scrooges, won't fight away from home and both avoided James Toney in his pomp. I will be so excited to see Vitali fight Haye. Not.
At least have the decency to fight one another. It is boxing, nobody is getting killed. Just fight each other and at least give the fans a fight they would like to see.

Wlad KO/TKO 6-7
The fight will suck, but nice location:
At Berne, Switzerland (Epix and EpixHD.com): Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tony Thompson, rematch, 12 rounds, for Klitschko's Ring/IBF/WBO/WBA heavyweight title.
I believe Wlad will attempt to KO Thompson, and add some "excitement" to the HW division in one of the earlier rounds, lets hope so, if it goes past 6 rounds it'll put everyone to sleep.

As much of an underdog as Cotto is against Floyd at this stage, I really think Thompson is A LOT more of an underdog. He's basically a no hoper. He's a tough solid enough guy but all he does really is jab jab jab. He lost once already, I figure he'll lose earlier and more emphatically this time. Pointless matchup, but still a step up from Mormeck who should be ashamed of himself.

They do dominate but in a boring way. They spend too much time on there opponents when they could knock them out alot earlier. They play it too safe and what the hell are they fighting this guy for. He looked crap last time, what is he gonna do this time. I would put either Helanius, Chisora or Arreola. Chisora and arreola would actually come to fight and Helanius has not had a chance yet. Im not saying they have a good chance of winning but they are the only ones who will put in the effort to win.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Wlad by KO, but quicker this time around. I ain't going to bother watching this fight.

So that's yet another heavyweight title fight that I'm not excited about.
Of course I will watch; I always do, but the prospect of the contest does whet my appetite at all.

How can you not like Wlad? That dude is a class act! And he's willing to fight anyone and everyone, he owns his style, he makes fun of his haters "I have to protect my glass chin" ....I mean the guy is a hell of a champion.
-
Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
I like Wlad. Nice dude, solid boxer. Buts it's recycled pooh like this that makes people want to see him get KTFO Deebo style.

Lyle, I somewhat agree here with Spicoli. New blood would have been better than this.

Wlad didn't make Thompson the mandatory

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Yeah...blame the IBF for the Thompson fight. If Wladimir were to get beat it probably wouldn't take long for the alphabet gang to strip Tony...then it would be like it was a few years ago with Brewster, Byrd, Toney, Rahman and Ruiz all claiming to be "The Champ".
Off topic....Lyle have you seen the Klitschko documentary yet?
I got a few links if you or anybody else is interested. No download required.

So by that are we saying that Thompson has a snowballs chance in hell? I mean if the strip him thats just another example of alphabet soup politricks. I'll go out on a limb and say the wouldn't strip Wlad if he didn't take it on the grounds that he's been there-done that. It tastes bad coming off that Mormeck farce.
Hasim Rahman is once again being called a mandatory heavyweight challenger

Uhh.... THIS.
The only thing I can add is that Thompson obviously lost the "paper-scissors-rock" held between the pathetic (and terrified) group of (cough) "contenders" that stink up....er.... I mean.... make up the heavyweight division.
Editor's Note: Thompson should've asked for best 2 out of 3. Just saying.

Re: Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson II July 7th
Wlad has mentioned fighting other challengers but either he's already beaten them, his brother has already beaten them, they are too green, or they are outright cowards.
Look for a challenger for him....Cris Arreola is coming back looking decent and I think he matches up well vs Wlad but hell he doesn't stand much of a chance. Seth Mitchell is too green. Chambers, Thompson, have already been beaten. Fury & Price are too young. Holyfield is too old, Toney is old and shot. Povetkin is a chicken and won't fight him. Valuev retired. Haye already got his ass kicked & retired. Chisora is suspended.
At this moment as a champion you try to root out a challenge like a recently retired fighter...Lennox Lewis WILL NOT come back....Riddick Bowe would but nobody wants to see that. Golota might but he's not "scary enough".....there is really nobody left for Wlad to fight....Wlad could fight til he's 40 and not have trouble holding on to his titles. If Vitali wasn't around Wlad would have a hell of a shot at beating or matching Joe Louis' record of successful defenses.

I'd like to throw Toney in there. It's probably illegal, but what the hell. Anything to see the beached whale dumped on his ample, substantial, cellulitic ass.
