Re: favourite old time boxer
Jack Johnson is definitely a good choice.
I like to think of the differences between Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, and Muhammad Ali. What's funny is Al Sharpton is on the Ali documentary about how Ali was robbed of his three years in his prime, but he isn't anywhere to be seen on the Louis documentary. Haha. What a useless piece of trash.

AMEN! Joe Louis willingly sacrificed his prime years to help the war effort and what thanks did he get? A POS like Sharpton not knowing anything about him!
When you say "Old Time" I think of the fighters like John L. Sullivan, Harry Greb, Battling Siki, Young Griffo, Kid Chocolate, Jim Jeffries, James J. Corbett, Stanley Ketchel, Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, etc etc. Loads of great nicknames back then and loads of great tales like the Sullivan-Kilrain fight where it was scorching hot and the men went toe to toe The Great John L swigging whiskey between rounds.

Sullivan is the stuff legends are made of. He went 75 rounds with Kilraine when he could have easily finished him inside of ten. He did it to show everybody that he wasn't a short winded Nancy. Sullivan is a boss.
Re: favourite old time boxer
Love Joe Louis for old time fighter as you can watch his fights and his moves looks modern.
Jack Dempsey raw punching power is also brutal and amazing to watch.
Re: favourite old time boxer
Sugar Ray Robinson, he laid down the blue print for the modern day boxer,
the man was a genius.
Re: favourite old time boxer
Willie Pep is another favourite of mine though I was very dissapointed by his record padding. He fought very very good opposition then he went on fighting bums for...well to his credit he survived a plane crash and still kicked a lot of ass
Re: favourite old time boxer
The Great John L is my favorite, not only for his bluff and bravado in the ring, but his antics out of the ring. Can you imagine John L storming into a bar and scowling "I can lick any sonuvabitch in the house!" and waiting for a response that never came? Classic! (read up one one man who did push back on him - Quebec strongman Louis Cyr. Great story). Closely following John L is James Jeffries, cause I think he was the bravest man in the world to come out of his undefeated retirement, with no warm up fights, and face the best HW boxer in the world under the race relation conditions of those times. He had to know he would lose that fight, but took it anyway. And I'll argue with anyone that Jeffries in his prime could have beaten Johnson in his prime, 'cause I think he would have.

Re: favourite old time boxer
I grew up reading Bios about Jack Dempsey. It's hard to say how good he really was, certainly one of the best of his era. It must have been something to have been Heavyweight Champion of the World during the Roaring 20's in America.
So Dempsey is easily, my favorite old time boxer.
In more modern times my favorite has become George Foreman, he was a great fighter, and he's an even better human being. I can't think of a better role model then "Big George" for young black men to emulate, and he's been far more successful as a businessman then he ever was as a boxer.
Re: favourite old time boxer
Archie Moore vs. Yvonne Durell is worth watching. So is Rocky Graziano vs. SRR.
Hard for me to watch black n white fights otherwise tho.

Joe Louis looks cool in Black and white
Re: favourite old time boxer
One of my all time old school fighters is Jack Dempsey. His skill and power are something else. Even Ko people with body shots. Slightly more modern it would have to be Henry Cooper. He was a brilliant boxer, with an incredible left hook.
Here's some cool videos.
Corbett Vs Fitzsimmons

Same for me; Ray was the ultimate entertainer in and out of the ring and never ducked anybody in 200 fights. A true legend.
Re: favourite old time boxer
Rocky Marciano , you got to love a guy who says the following before every fight.
" Im going to throw as many punches as I can , as hard as I can , for as long as I can"
He may not have been a classic boxer but he was a top guy.

I am seriously old if RJJ is an 'old time fighter'...
One of the greats of 'the old times' would be Bob Fitzsimmons. A national of the world, he is the only man to win THE Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight World Championship...
