Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
This will easily be the biggest boxing event of the year, so if you're a boxing fan, even a casual one, you don't wanna miss it, I may have to actually break down and buy the PPV.
May 5th
At Las Vegas (HBO PPV): Miguel Cotto vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr., 12 rounds, for Cotto's WBA junior middleweight title; Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Shane Mosley, 12 rounds, for Alvarez's WBC junior middleweight title.
Not to wish Cotto any bad luck, because I hope he kicks Floyd's ass but I honestly can't see Miguel winning by a decision. As for Canelo vs Mosley, I wouldn't be surprised if Mosley had one good fight left in him, and he does well against Mexican fighters, so i'm going to pick him to win by upset.
So, Floyd on points (unless Miguel wins by TKO/KO) and Mosley by a decision over Alvarez, unless Shane gets screwed on the scorecards, which is possible in Vegas. (knock the muther-fucker out Shane ;) )
Who ya got?
-
I want Cotto and canelo to win. Obviously I think mayweather will but still feel Cotto has a shot just because he is a great fighter and will be patient, choose his punches carefully. As long as he doesn't try to go all out and try to just muscle Floyd, Because that's what every one tries and fails.

Got some friends coming over should be a worthwhile undercard, first PPV I'm paying for this year.
I have a thing for flags.

The excitement level is starting to build here. I'm gonna be watching the fight at my house this time, and got lots of friends and family coming over. We're gonna be playing dominoes in the afternoon, relaxing with some cold beer and snacks.... and then... LET'S GET READY TO RUMB-L-L-L-L-L-E!!!!!
My brother and brother-in-law are both predicting Cotto KO wins, but I tend to not let my heart get in the way of my head. So I won't be so bold. I do think that Cotto has a better than average chance if he brings his A-game and Diaz has done his job preparing him for the fight.
As for who I want to win..... that would be Cotto and Mosley. I'll be rooting for Mosley almost as much as I'll be rooting for Cotto.
:)

I suspect that might be because you'd just like to see Canelo get KTFO, rather then being a big fan of Mosley. :-X

Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
I hope I'm wrong but I honestly think they put Mosley in there just to make Canelo look good for a possible Mayweather fight next. I wouldn't be surprised if Alvarez would be the first one to stop Mosley in his career.
Cotto has to make his move in the first half of the fight because once Floyd gets his rhythm and figure out Miguel's style it'll just be an easy coast to a decision for Floyd.

I hear that! The PPVs usually have enough fights that at least one is entertaining.
I'm guessing they will televise:
Latimore vs. Quintana (should be good)
Forbes vs. Vargas (not expecting much from this one)
Canelo vs. Mosley (should be good)
Cotto vs. Mayweather (could be good)
I don't expect any barnburners (Canelo/Mosley might be) but should be a decent card.
-
Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
I think the style matchups are good all around and I think Canelo-Mosley could be a barnburner if Shane can take Saul's punches and vice versa. None of the fights jump out to me and scream "There's a KO!" I mean if Cotto can last as long as he did with Margarito (loaded wraps) & Pacquiao (Weight drained & sans trainer) then I think he'll make it 12 with Floyd unless Floyd really steps on the gas and guns for a KO which #1 isn't Floyd's style and #2 would be quite dangerous. Cotto may not win a single second of the fight, but I feel it's niave to think Floyd will KO him even late on in the match....Cotto may very well hit the canvas a time or two, but he's got loads of heart.
I hope Pedro Diaz has a good fight plan set for Cotto to impliment

Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
I'm looking forward to see how Mayweather handles Cotto's "switch-hitter" style and adjusts to his southpaw stance. Cotto is going to have to be as game as he was against Judah and Margarito II combined if he wants to break Mayweather on the inside. PBF and Cotto are two of my favorite fighters and to finally be able to see them meet in the ring makes me shed grizzly tears. But I gotta pick someone, so war Cotto; pull the upset and jack Mayweather's swag! http://www.cute-factor.com/images/sm...iexpress01.gif
As for Mosley vs Canelo, this has got to be Shane's crescendo win/lose. If he brings everything and turns back the clock, he'll deal Canelo the hardest fight of his life and the hardest punches he has ever felt.

You're only 50% correct, my friend. I really AM a big fan of Mosley. On the other hand, I also WOULD like to see Canelo get KTFO'ed.

Mayweather on points
Mosley to win
Sykes to get mauled
That's what I think
Think it will be target practice for mayweather cotto has had his moment

@Master should know the answer to that, let's see what he says.
I'm sure some of the members from the UK/Europe and elsewhere will be staying up late to watch this one.

Since I posted I found out this is a pay per month service owned by Frank Warren. Not sure if it's online, television or both.

Probably both, but TV for sure, i've heard different things about BoxNation, I really don't know the details. I do know that they pay a whole lot less then we do for PPV boxing in the UK then we do here in the States, because @Master is always saying how we're getting ripped off here.
DIRECTV will be selling this HBO PPV in HD for $64.95 and normally I wouldn't buy it, but since it's the biggest fight of year, and i'm doing this fight thread, I don't want to take a chance on getting a shitty stream.
P.S. I'm gonna be pissed at myself if Floyd dominates, i'm not buying this to see Mayweather control the action, hopefully we'll see something competitive and ideally Cotto wins. (even if he does sleep with men) :-X
-
I wouldn't be surprised if Mayweather is physically more imposing than Cotto when they are in the ring like he was against Mosely. I see Cotto getting pounded bu uppercut because of how he naturally leans in and holds his hands. I also see Floyd popping the body and taking the starch out of Miguel. Cotto stamina is always a Leary thing and Floyd is going to make EVERY punch count so couple that with Cotto's face tearing open quite easily I see him getting stopped late. Floyd has shown since JMM that he keeps moving Forward and stays aggressive even when Mosely buzzed him good.
It's a tough fight for me to root. Always been a passionate PBF fan. But over the years have grown tired of the lack of class. On the other hand Cotto has grown on me after the 1st Margarito fight and the wraps being loaded. From a human standpoint I was raged that a chunk of his prime was wrongfully taken by a 2 bit piece of cheating trash. How can you not cheer for a guy that loves his family and puts them 1st and won't utter a word of trash and is a complete gentleman? If Cotto wins I can say honestly that he earned it and couldn't have happen to a nicer guy

I agree. I think Alvarez is a very good fighter. A bit too youthfull for these old guys... Possibly even Mayweather included.
Against Cotto though, I think it`ll be a spiteful tit-for-tat fight for the first six rounds then something or someone will give... I think Cotto gets on his shinny new bike and makes it difficult for Floyd.

I didn't really think Cotto was drained for the Pacquiao fight. I thought Margarito just took something out of the Puerto Rican warrior by using cement in his wraps. I also thought Cotto was too slow for Pacquiao. Cotto didn't look great in the final round of Margarito II either. It may have been the right decision to stop the fight because of the eye, but if the eye hadn't been an issue, I saw Margarito coming on strong. Pedro Diaz has done well, but he hasn't fixed the stamina problems.

I agree with you @Tenshio. I hope we're wrong, but I see Canelo giving Mosley a whipping, or Mosley getting hit with a good puch, and then running and surviving for the remainder of the fight.
If Floyd wants to end this fight early, I think he will. I bet Floyd comes out of his shell a little bit in this fight once he adjusts and times Cotto. I like Floyd by stoppage middle rounds.

Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
Who wins Mayweather-Cotto? Ask the experts | RingTV The experts overwhelmingly pick Pretty Boy, 23-1, and the "1" was Paulie Malignaggi. I stand by my mid-round stoppage for PBF.
With regard to Canelo-Mosley, same, the experts overwhelmingly pick Canelo: 19-1, with the "1" being Guerrero. Alvarez or Mosley? The experts weigh in | RingTV
As Guerrero makes the point, the only thing I see in this fight going a different way than I imagine is if 154 favors Mosley. It didn't seem to do him any favors against Mora, but Mora is awkward.

Could Cotto fight southpaw to give Floyd extra problems as Zab and Corley did?

Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
Weigh-in:
Cotto - 154
Mayweather - 151
Canelo Alvarez - 154
Mosley - 154 1/2 - Shane has 60 minutes to shed the half-pound, that shouldn't be a problem for the old pro.
Cotto looks bigger than Floyd, I really like his attitude, and I don't believe he's at all intimated. Should be a great fight tomorrow night.

More weights
Steve Forbes - 146.5 lbs.
Jesse Vargas - 146 lbs.
didn't catch the weights for for the Quintana fight.

Cotto has a lot of variations in his game which should keep Mayweather busy. Cotto has also been more active the last 5 years, Floyd's inactivity and ring/rust may catch up to him. Contrary to popular belief, Floyd is not invincible, fuck the experts, i'm going with Cotto to win this.

I didn't mean height or reach, just saying, to me Miguel looks physically bigger, that may or may not mean something.

Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
This would be a good night for Floyd to use his jab, he has a great one. Cotto is the ONE fighter he shouldn't get into a left hook contest with at Cotto's weight of 154. If Mayweather hooks with him he could get caught again.
Mayweather has to use his jab in this fight and not let Cotto try to use his weight on him. Mayweather is truly a small man fighting in the bigger weight class, just without the hype. He is going to have to fight a really smart fight this time around and not make some of the mistakes he made against Ortiz but could get away with. Mayweather leads with left hooks this fight he may get caught, tomorrow must be the night of the jab for him.
Then again no one should underestimate Cotto's jab too.
-
Re: Cotto vs. Floyd Jr. & "Canelo" Alvarez vs. Mosley - Saturday night fight thread
I really thought Mosley vs Mayweather was going to be competitive, especially after Shane rocked Floyd in the 1st round, but then for some strange reason Mosley just quit fighting. I never could figure it out, it's like Mosley thought, WTF am I doing, i'm not supposed to win this.
Point is, if Cotto can put some hurt on Floyd right from the get go, landing powerful left hooks to Floyd's head and body, I believe unlike Margarito who had a granite chin, it could be a game changer. The trick is hitting Floyd, which is not an easy thing.
Floyd says: "I want to take it to Cotto" and find out what he's got, hopefully this will be a big mistake for him. Cotto has been in some fucking wars and for the most part done well, I question whether Mayweather could survive a "war" with Cotto and/or if his chin would hold up for 12 rounds.
-
Picking Floyd to win easy is a no brainer but for some reason I see mosley being a dick ko'ing Canelo and ruining a bunch of peoples night.

Mosely stopped throwing because he didn't like what was coming back, it's easy to ask why he stopped throwing but against a tremendous counterpuncher with great accuracy it has to rattle the game plan quite a bit. If Cotto presses than he leaves himself open. Is he willing throw 1 and take one back?

Do u stay up to 4am to watch it and risk falling asleep (like I normally do)
Or watch in the morning.
Tough call.

I don't see Floyd as being a big puncher, i'm not saying he doesn't have some power, but I just don't see him being able to hurt the bigger Cotto the way Pacquiao and Margarito did, if Floyd wins it won't be by KO. I don't know why so many believe that Mayweather wins by KO, this ain't an awestruck Ortiz or a washed up Gatti. Cotto is going to be a live Dog in this fight, will Floyd be able to go 12 hard rounds for the first time in his career?

heart of a lion , but Mayweather is different league, Money UD.
