Andre Berto test positive for steriods...WTF!!!

Well just read Dan Rafael say that Berto test positive for steriods, obviously the Ortiz rematch is in big trouble.

What is the trend here??? Is everyone doping? Boxing is looking so bad and I keep asking myself if any investment as a viewer in it is worth it. Watching a PPV is obviously something you pay day of and if the fight is not on then you dont pay, but what if you want to watch a fight live, you can get tickets refunded if opponents are changd but if you had to book a flight and a hotel you are out that money...watching the sport is becoming as financially risky as fighting in it is physically.

If this is true then it certainly is bad news on the heels of Lamont Peterson being caught for using synthetic testosterone.

Boxing isn't alone in this though as MMA is filled with it as well. One of my favorite fighters, Overeem just got caught for testosterone levels that were through the roof !

Ortiz should go through with the fight on the condition that he is allowed one flagrant head butt with no penalty. And also that he is allowed to kiss Berto a minimum of 3 times afterwards.

while this is true, MMA fights have cards that a stacked usually with 5 good fights in different weight classes with fighters you want to see fighting each other. Boxing gives us one good fight and a bunch of fillers most of the time and if that big fight gets cancelled usually the whole card is dumped.

My personal stance on this is every top athlete out there is doping. With that being said, this still came off as a shock to me and is indeed one of those WTF moments as we just had the Peterson issue not too long ago. Talk about a controversial month for boxing.

Of course that many of them dope and people are fooled by "hasn't failed a drug test" while of course every cheater fails after having not failed, like if in boxing there were all saints when in baseball all of them were cheating

To be fair, Floyd has never sought VADA testing for any of the fighters he promotes or fighters he trains with, he hasn't petitioned the Nevada commission to improve their testing procedures, he hasn't come out with any position whatsoever on the Peterson/Khan fiasco, and I don't expect him to come out with anything on the Berto-Ortiz II situation either. He wants tests to ensure safety and rule compliance for himself.

1-Timing-Khan stopped training and was taking a short break. He'd have to start training again ASAP.
Also Roach is preoccupied with training Pac now, then has Chavez Jr. in mid June. No time to get Kahn ready for Ortiz by June 23rd. Kahn's team looking for a July date.
2-Weight-Khan was training for his body to get down to 140. I'd assume he doesn't do alot of strength work to make sure he can make 140. If Khan is going to move to 147-he will have a camp where he is looking to add a few pounds of muscle onto his frame.
3-Opponent-Khan isn't going to move to 147 and look to take on the biggest motherfucker in the division in his first fight. Ortiz weighed 164 pounds when he walked into the ring against Floyd. And Ortiz isn't just a big welter, he is pretty good.

Khan probably moves up to 147 soon. But he isn't going to seek out a challenge like Ortiz in his first fight. His team probably goes for a relatively safe, but lower top 10 ranked guy (espn or other unbiased rankings).

This is very unfortunate. Berto had the chance of a lifetime to get revenge and for once assert his obvious talent in a defining fight and tarnishes it all with this. I don't get it at all.

Floyd was being a dick when he started all this shit....... But maybe it wasn't such a bad thing afterall . Berto's prison swoll ass was kinda a Holyfield / kirkland type giveaway but some real surprises are going to come out of all this cheating . Hey margacheto got a title shot for his efforts , I say berto should skip ortiz and fight Floyd next.

Yes that is very true. And MMA (UFC) can get a replacement fast, such as in the case of Mir stepping in for Overeem since all fighters are under the same umbrella and often fighting on the same stacked card.

When a high profile fighter is out of a high profile fight there are rarely any viable substantial replacements.

Upset me quite a bit last summer when Guerrero hurt himself training and had to pull out of the Maidana matchup in San Jose. I had bought tickets to that event and would have gotten to see that fight and Seth Mitchell vs. Mike Mollo LIVE. It would have kicked ass...:eek:

Same organization as far as I know, VADA. Also, it was detected in his urine. Nandrolone was the one that did Berto in. From what I've been reading, and if Berto did ingest the drug, he should rightfully be thumped in the head.

Not really. Floyd already had taken numerous random tests for illegal substance and came off clean. So no, not interesting.

You know what really pisses me off though? Pacquiao vs Bradley is still going ahead while these guys are getting caught left right and centre. Simply because Pac the diva doesn't want to take the tests. (yes I know he's agreed apparently for Floyd but it's not something he pushes for other fights is it?) - These guys, Berto and Peterson have had paydays cut short because they volunteered and got caught (sure they brought it on themselves). Where are the standards in boxing?

No, everybody has a right to a defence - Including Pacquiao if he was caught taking anything. Although to be fair, his refusal to take the tests and then to test positive would be looked at more unfavourably by the public than the people who were pushing for it and then got caught in my opinion.

An interesting thing to note as well is that Nandrolone is one of the worst peds to take if you are being tested - It has an 18 month clearance time and anyone with any limited knowledge of PED's would know this. So it always baffles me when idiots are caught with Nandrolone. Same stuff Toney and Roy Jones were caught for.

So it could very well be that Berto is clean as a whistle right now and has been for over a year..but if he took Nandrolone within the last 18 months, these tests can detect the metabolites still in his body. Very foolish.

That's why it stands to reason that Berto thought he was absolutely fine volunteering for these tests. He's probably been clean for a while but didn't bank on nandrolone having such a long clearance time.

Not sure why these latest discoveries should be shocking? Anybody who actually believes that anyone was going to get caught with a few exceptions by scheduled tests is naive to put it nicely. Random testing is not even a guarantee with all the designer Peds around and continuing to be made.

People did forget that berto did come off of a serious injury to his shoulder/arm when a doc says look if u wanna fight again take this steroid to help heal your body. You will take it but prior to the injury I believe he was clean. Maybe if the fight was set at a later date he would have been clean. I'm glad mayweather started this movement in boxing to clean up the sport it just doesn't make since to me how PAC man can get knocked down by Marquez but runs thru bigger and much better opponents. All of his last fights have been catch weights and disadvantage fights love watching him but as a man he should want to take the test to prove for the sport that the best fighters are truly the best because of there hard work and dedication not because a trainer or doc is giving them something to help them not feel pain in the ring lol

These may be the best posts on this whole thread. It amazes me how people use the news to support their own opinions about boxers, promoters, etc. All it takes is an ounce of research, and the truth can always be found.

It is interesteing that I just chose to reply to the Peterson/Khan thread regarding steroids and gave mention to the James Toney incident... Please know that these tests are accurate but applied in different ways according to who is promoting the fight. Most people think that testing is the answer, but it is also overrun with deep pocket money grabbers.

Now as a boxing fan, could it be that GBP did not want Khan to fight Peterson again? Could it be that they did not want Ortiz to fight Berto again--choosing a 140lb fighter to take on the biggest welter in the US?

As a boxing fan, I think they made a huge mistake in both cases, because they didn't understand the grit of a Josesito Lopez (Ortiz always quits..), and they don't see the determination of Danny Garcia (Khan has tasted two types of defeat, and is coming off the loss. He's not ready to give up his 0, and it just might complete the Trifecta of high profile losses started w Manny Pacquiao.

As far as getting their chance to speak, neither Berto's nor Peterson's situation have been given the type of 'fair' coverage that a situation with Manny would get. Honestly, it was like they were made to disappear instead of using the incidents to bring light to rampant use-and possibility of error... Any major sports news coverage after the day it happened for Peterson or Berto? Front page or back page by-line?
