Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
:action: Starting @9:00 PM ET tonight here in the States and beginning at around 1:00 AM in the UK. A watchable undercard, including Winky Wright vs. Peter Quillin and a Jr. middleweight title fight, with Austin Trout vs. Delvin Rodriguez going at it.
June 2
At Carson, Calif. (Showtime): Antonio Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode, 12 rounds, cruiserweights; Winky Wright vs. Peter Quillin, 10 rounds, middleweights; Austin Trout vs. Delvin Rodriguez, 12 rounds, for Trout's WBA "regular" junior middleweight title; Leo Santa Cruz vs. Vusi Malinga, 12 rounds, for vacant IBF bantamweight title.
It will be interesting to see if Tarver can handle the much younger and hard hitting Kayode.

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
I'm really excited for this card, its like a hardcore boxing fan's PPV, budget PPV mind you, but a PPV quality card ;D
I got Wright upsetting Quillin, its a bit of a long shot, but I've yet to see Quillin beat a real quality guy.
Trout looked very good the one time I seen him, I'll be rooting for Delvin to pull the upset.
And finally I see Tarver schooling Kayode after weathering the early onslaught, I really do see a Tarver UD or late TKO.

I haven't even seen Kayode or Austin Trout fight ever, but I think you're reallllly hoping on the Wright upset. Winky looked completely spent against Williams which must have been a couple of years ago now already, before that it was a similar layoff after looking bloated and old against Hopkins etc. Quillin if nothing else is very athletic and in good condition, I can't see him losing here even if he doesn't manage to shine. I expect next to nothing from Winky mind you, and it would be fun if he could regain some form.

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
Tarver & Trout easy! Quillin too I think...

All thats true and I really don't care too much about the Wright fight as I've never been a fan of his or his boring, spoiler, terrible style.
I'm just rooting for the old vet as I nearly always do.
And I think he's HUNGRY again.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
Winky did not have a boring spoiler style in his day. I can totally understand finding him bad to watch, but calling him a spoiler really isn't fair imo. He was essentially a pressure fighter, almost always coming forward and had a great jab. He couldn't hit much and kept his guard up, but he rarely held or moved away from his opponent for lengths of time. He had a very effective and underrated offense imo, his style wasn't negative in the vein of a spoiler as he really fought hard to win every round fair and square.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
winky is one of the most boring fighters ever.. Lets not make it sound like he was anything different during his prime cuz he was always the same old stinky.
I always told my friend that stinky could be fighting a 50ft giant woman with her titties all hangin out and I still wouldnt watch it.
peter beats him without trouble at this point.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
With regard to Wright/Quillin, I'm rooting for Winky because I find it somewhat ridiculous that Quillin on multiple occasions calls out Martinez and then decides to face Winky Wright, the same Winky Wright that is 1-2-1 in his last four fights, and in his last fight got starched by Paul Williams.
I lean with Trout against Rodriguez although this is by far Trout's biggest step up. Rodriguez has been in tougher, but I'm not sure with anyone as dynamic as Trout.
I like Tarver against Kayode. Kayode didn't look good against a guy that is only an average boxer, Scanuzzi (sp?), a few fights ago, which leads me to believe Tarver will outbox him, if he hasn't aged too much.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
I want to see Tarver sparked cold....sorry, I just HAVE to see it

This should be a good night of boxing, Trout vs. Rodriguez figures to be action packed, i'd like to see Delvin pick up a title.
The 43 year old Tarver might be biting off a little more then he can chew here. Kayode is a raw talent, but he does have some pop in his punches, and Freddie Roach will have him ready, so we shall see.
As for Winky vs Quillin, Wright probably 'wins' with his experience in a close, boring one they give to Quillin.

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night on Showtime
One of the better fights on the card isn't being shown on regular Showtime: Bika v. Davis. It's Davis's biggest test thus far.

Maybe I'm off on the name, but he's the son of a what's his name, the famous Olympian boxer.

Tarver my friend. Tarver could look unbelievably old overnight. He should be able to get by kayode if he has anything left.
1-Kayode's power: not what you think. 14 kos out of 18 wins. He had UD in his first fight, then 14 KOs, and then 3 UDs against his 3 best opponents.
That says to me his power was against nobodies and journeymen. As soon as he started facing decent fighters (Iannuzi, Godfrey, and Cora Jr.) he didn't KO anyone.
2-Kayode can be outboxed. Iannuzi lost on all 3 scorecards. The scorecard that was 95-94 Kayode tells the story. Kayode was outboxed by a guy who is ok at best. Iannuzi used a jab and Kayode just followed him around alot. Didn't cut off the ring that well.
3-Tarver should just box at distance. If he keeps the jab coming and enough straight lefts, he'll have time to move (without running) and he can turn Kayode all night.
Kayode has to get to the body early and slow Tarver down. If he doesn't Tarver wins going away.
All this being said, I may end up looking like a dipshit, but that is why they fight the fights!!!! Look forward to it.
As for Winky vs Quillin. This is Winky's 3rd fight in 5 yrs. 5 yrs!! First fight in over 3 yrs. And he hasn't won a fight since December 2006. December 2006 was a lifetime ago.
Have to favor pretty heavily Quillin.
Have to give Trout the slight edge over Rodriguez.

Showtime is doing a great thing this year. They are showing some fights that don't make the main program on Showtime Extreme.
So even an event on Showtime that has 2 fights, you will get a couple extra fights on Showtime Extreme.
Isn't that what fans want? More fights!!!! My biggest gripes as a fan: 1-Need more fights, 2-more evently matched fights (sick of guys who are top 3-5 in a division facing a guy who isn't a legit top 15 guy), 3-trinkets obsession- I could care less about the trinkets. For every time there is a unification fight where fans get to see 2 legit top 5 or so guys (if you look at unbiased rankings for the division), we have to sit through 10 mandatories (with most of them against guys who aren't that good-perfect opponents who have a decent enough record but we know are there to come, try hard, and then lose comfortably).

Yep Capt, Tarver 'should' be able to get by Kayode on experience alone, but Lateef is a young, strong kid who Freddie will have ready. I'm going with Kayode to outwork, out-muscle and put some hurt on Tarver on his way to a UD. ;)
I mean when you think about it, who the fuck is Tarver, he's 43 years old, and hasn't won a really meaningful fight in years.
As for the other 2 fights, i'd like to see Delvin get the nod over Trout. Quillin will likely outpoint Winky, but it won't be easy, getting by Wright is never easy. I'd love to see Winky school Quillin, who's a bit too cocky for his own good, it's one thing to talk the talk, but when you can't walk the walk, you look like a fool.
cheers

Yeah Howard Davis Jr.'s son. I believe his first name is Dyah tho I probably spelled it wrong. He's a nice kid and a pretty good boxer especially considering how late in life he picked up boxing.
He's gonna have his hands full with Bika. Wasn't too long ago Sakio took on Ward and really didn't do too bad considering the talent and tactics he was up against.

What time does is start in the UK? I've got boxnation but I am back home in southport and not in Leeds this weekend so can't watch it on boxnation. Anybody have a stream? I'll try and access a laptop later, I don't have mine though :(. It's such a good card this one, I really need to watch it.

I'm guessing the undercard will start around 1:00 AM in the UK, but the main event likely won't begin until around 3:00 AM or after. If you're around closer to fight time, I'll try hooking you up with a stream.
cheers

Cheers mars, I don't think im going to be able to watch it tonight actually, feeling a bit too tired. Hopefully boxnation will have a repeat on tomorrow and I'll catch it then. I think there will be some great fights though. My picks are Tarver UD, Quillin UD And Trout UD.

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Here we go, tonight's fights just starting on Showtime, a 4 fight card, Al Bernstein, and blithering idiot Gus Johnson calling the action, 1st up Leo Santa Cruz vs. Vusi Malinga, 12 rounds, for the vacant IBF bantamweight title.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Wright was pure quality but you know...I hope he gets whipped on here. He is-was just too damn good to waste so much of his later career. Just strolling in off 3 yrs layoff, preceded by 2 yr layoff. Its a shame man.
Bika really gave Davis a lesson in reality there!
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Santa Cruz doing nice body work in the 1st round, and looks to be the better fighter.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
if any of yall can send me a PM of da fightz i would rly apprteciate it :)

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
blow by blow announcers often state that there is a belt on the line. I am not a fan of the trinkets as the organizations are corrupt, but I understand it. Gus Johnson's dumb ass repeats every round that it is for a belt, as if he doesn't really understand that there is 4 major belts and interim belts, etc.... He talks like Santa Cruz winning means he is the man in the division.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Gus makes me actually look forward to seeing Lampley. Santa cruz is really turning the corner this round, just solid rib cracking.

Malinga is eating a lot of leather, I can't see him going 12 rounds with Santa Cruz. Good card tonight.
cheers, Capt.

Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
waiting for Gus to scream "he's hurt, he's hurt". He is known to do it when a guy isn't really hurt. Gus continually shows he knows next to nothing about the sports he calls. When Gus calls college basketball I have to turn the volume off.
-
Re: Tarver vs. Lateef Kayode Saturday night fight thread
Malinga was getting hit ugly that last half of 7th. Literally rockng back and forth from heel to toe
rt side of face is swollen bad

I don't see why they don't use Farhood in place of Johnson. I may have to mute the sound rather than listen to his shit for 3 hours.
So far Malinga has taken everything Santa Cruz is throwing, but you've got to wonder how long he can keep taking this kind of punishment.

Santa Cruz is pretty effin good
