Damien Hirst at Tate Modern
I am once again on my way to London by way of train on a day trip to fulfill the 2nd of my three New years resolutions. I have now seen the Lucian Freud retrospective and will be going to Copenhagen to see David Hockeny's work in November. My gorgeous other half has joined me for this one and I am looking forward to seeing so many Hirst's in one place. As an installation artist myself I can not say that Hirst, Emin and many lesser known Young British Artists have not had an impact on my own practice. Not sure if anyone will be interested now Miles is on holiday but will post anyway. Saddo is a broad church and there are at least two other artists and many culturally inquisitive posters here anyhoos, Boxing itself being a great artform.

I'm an installation artist too. I work with organic material like Hirst but my work is far superior to his.

No, I'm not on holiday yet, but am bordering on it and am addicted to this place.
Hirst is an interesting artist. I am not sure I understand him, but I kind of respect him. For me art is not about understanding, but just to see something and to sometimes see it in a different way. Art for me is reflection and sometimes it makes sense. Other times it doesn't. But then later you connect more deeply.
I know it isn't connected, but I have felt that with Van Gogh in recent times. I always respected the paintings, but never really connected. But later, I looked again and the lines seemed deeper. The strokes more dramatic and I looked at paintings like 'The wheatfields and the crows' and saw myself.
That is art. Humans connecting with other human beings. Sometimes you just see, other times you see deeper.
I don't profess to know what every piece shows. It reveals itself in its own time, if at all. If indeed it even exists. I'm not sure.

This is unrelated but is about Damien Hirst. Recently there was some testimonial snooker evening for Jimmy White. Jimmy auctioned his own personal cue that went for £5000. Hirst auctioned a cue he painted that went for £25,000.

Any kind of art with Hirst's name attached is going to go for a premium. Hirst still doesn't do the kind of money that my installation art makes though.

Yeah. The most Ive carved is the head of Jesus. made a few replacement thumbs for statues, an arm once.
Loads of corbels and leaves and fireplaces though.

He would of got that made in China for a song (about 1500 to 2000 pounds).

i got a hirst for sale.... Attachment 2453
in 1999 camel commissioned 3 artists including hirst to design limited edition cigarette packs.
unopened and in lovely condition.
