Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Here we go, Joe and Teddy calling the action, first up Jose Luis Castillo vs. Ivan Popoca, 10 rounds, welterweights. (yes, that Jose Luis Castillo) ;)
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Castillo vs. Ivan Popoca has been a surprising good fight so far, Popoca down in the 2nd round, but has come back well, the fight is heading into the 5th round.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Popoca's face is a bloody mess, cut over both eyes.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Good stoppage really, he was swimming in crimson. Holycrap, Mike Hunters son is an Olymipian :-X kinda cool. Good on ESPN for team coverage.

Yup, the only way Popoca would have won was by KO in the last 2 rounds and that wasn't going to happen. I was really surprised that Castillo did as well as he did against this young guy.
Cheers bro, looks like you and me are the only ones watching FNF. :-X
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara

Don't know a thing about Fonfara but love the mentality, he's not in aww. Putting it on Johnson in 3rd!

At 43 Johnson is amazing, I don't know how the dude gets in such good "boxing" shape at that age. Fonfara has given a good account of himself so far, Johnson has hit him with some good shots that he's taken well.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
A lot of Fonfara's punches get blocked on Johnson's arms and gloves, whereas Johnson's punches seem to me to be more effective.. Even fight so far, that could go either way in the last 2 rounds.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Fonara really had him swinging in the wind that last round. Just too strong and layed in the straight punches down the middle. I gave Johnson 4 rounds, tops. Good solid honest scrap!
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Two good quality fights tonight on ESPN.
Glen hardly ever wins a close decision, Chicago is Fonfara's adopted U.S. City, Johnson will lose.
Onward to Khan vs Garcia.. ;)
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Couple of old veterans in action tonight. I thought Castillo did well, although Popoca is incredibly easy to hit, and now has two TKO losses in a row. He's tough... but may have a short career. In the other fight, good effort by both men. Although in all honesty, I'm sort of tired of seeing Glen Johnson in the ring. He needs to retire already. He's a classy guy, but was never a ball of fire... and now has become just a plodding old dude. Seventy fights is good enough to call it a career.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
I had Johnson/Fonfara a 95-95 draw. The judge who scored it 99-91 is an absolute joke. Plain cheating that. Johnson won a bare fucking minimum of 3.
Fonfara would be a competitive match for Nathan Cleverly. It was supposed to happen before but they brought Tommy Karpency over instead. Maybe now it can happen, if Nathan Cleverly ever fights again, its been a while to have no fight pencilled in.

I had it 6-4 Fonfara. Johnson needed to win that 10th round but he was just totally gassed. He's lost just enough of a step that he can no longer effectively apply his pressure style against top 15 and up competition.
I had hoped that Johnson's poor performances against Froch and Bute were mostly due to cutting down to 168 and fighting such elite guys, but he fought the same way tonight. Clearly Fonfara had a lot to do with that as well as this was his superbowl and he was up for it and took some hard clean shots despite his pencil neck.
It was great to see Castillo get a win against a younger guy with a good record, once I remembered who Apoca was I figured Castillo had a shot as Apoca is tough as hell, but slow and not overly talented. Castillo dominated, showed great defense, didn't quit once the going got tough with his hand and got a nice win.

Thanks for this, I have recorded it and wanted to know if it was worth watching at speed or normal.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
Good scrap. Fonfara ain't bad. Johnson has a chin and it looked like Fonfara rocked him a few times.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
I scored it 97-93 for Fonfara.
Glen acknowledged after the fight that he lost.
Re: ESPN FNF for July 13th - Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara
I had Fonfara up by a few points. Glen gassed in the second half of the fight. Father time crept up on him. He's had a great career...wish him the best.
