Best trainer, living or dead?
That's a trick question. In my opinion, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain is the best ever and he's still alive.
Here are some other great ones:
Frederick "Pee Wee" Beale
Ray Arcel
Eddie Futch
Emanuel Steward
Angelo Dundee
"Lou" Duva
"Cus" D'Amato
Freddie Roach
Make your own list and let's compare, there are plenty more great trainers out there.

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Ignacio is a great choice and he's certainly up there.
Nearly all of his best fighters Zaragoza to Lopez to Marquez had common attributes which demonstrated the system he has nurtured to bring these guys to the top.
Futch is an obvious selection and very deserving of his reputation. He may be the best.
Charley Goldman has to be appreciated for his abilities as an alchemist.
I think Arcel was exceptional.
Goody Peteronelli did a great job with Collins to concrete his work with Hagler. Even Simms was a dman good fighter.

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Eddie Futch
Angelo Dundee
"Lou" Duva
and Naachooooooooo libre I mean Beristain

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Dundee and Roach are great trainers, but their major stars were already good boxers (I think I would be remembered as a great trainer if I had Muhammad Ali, Ray Leonard or Manny Pacquiao in my stable).
No disrespect to those guys, but I really rate some of the old timers who had to slog their way through life and created a mega star on their way - people like Chappie Blackburn, Eddie Futch or Charley Goldman.
-
Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Eddie Futch
Angelo Dundee
Emanuel Stewart
probably in that order....... with an honorable mention to Cus D'Amato
-
Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
I have always rated Brendon Ingle.

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?

I wouldn't argue with anyone's picks, but look at the list of pro fighters Ignacio Beristain trained, they are almost all champions plus 4 or 5 are in the Hall of Fame. He's amazing, and in my opinion, head and shoulders above the rest.
I'm watching Virgil Hunter, I want to see what he does with Khan and Angulo.

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Said it once, twice three four and 100 times...
"Nacho", Dundee, Arcel and "Pee Wee" for my likings in that order.

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
and since we are on the subject can we stop overlooking Sdunek & Correa these 2 hardly ever get a mention...

Jose "Pepe" Correa
Fritz Sdunek
"Pepe" Correa that screwed Lennox Lewis?

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
No one ever ever mentions Freddie Brown, he was a master of his trade.
-
Futch, Arcel, Nacho, D'Amato, Benton, Roach......all are good, but if I HAD to pick one I would say Futch.
-
Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
I'll stick with Benton. Father of the shoulder roll. Trained Evander, Meldrick, Sweet Pea and McCallum. Studied under Futch.
-
Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Agreed Eddie Futch would be a dream to have you train, that knowledge stretched back to Joe Loius era. Emanuel Steward has that knowledge and pedigree.
-
Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Eddie Futch to me is an all time great trainer. Paved the road and took the 0 from Ali, Roy Jones and Holyfield. Has a deeper resume but those stand out the most to me.

Re: Best trainer, living or dead?
Bill Miller. Trained Toney, Emmanuel Stewart (as an amateur) and was the real guy behind Kronk.
