George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Good fight.
If Groves isn't going to world level the old boy will expose him. Fight should prove a lot. Even though the pensioner never beats anyone, he makes it tough for most. A stoppage victory for Groves would be very impressive, albeit against a fossil.
Proceed...
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
I've no problems with this one at all.
Yep totally agree. Age of Johnson not in question, it will prove what Groves has to offer in the long run.
At best I think Groves can force a late retirement. At worst he will get old manned like Thompson did to Haye. Looking forward to it.
My early prediction is that Johnnson will fail to answer the bell for the 11th
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Perfect fight at this stage of Groves' career. To continue the comparison with James DeGale, it's a tougher fight than DeGale has experienced yet. I thought Johnson retired after his last loss against the Pole in Chicago, Fonfara.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Because the dinosaurs retirement came just a couple of months back I don't think it's a big deal.
It's a massive step-up in class for Groves. When did Johnson ever turn up just for a "payday?" He'll make it tough for Groves, which makes it a good fight
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Perfect fight at the right time.
The only way I imagine Groves losing is going for the KO and running out of steam then being taken apart. Do not see it happening in the slightest though.
Will get Groves more decent exposure overseas too. Hopefully this fight will test Groves but allow him to come through with a win and injury free. 12 months from now he might be in a position to tackle Kessler if he can stay busy.
Another fighter that is not afraid to step out of his comfort zone.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Apparently it's not set in stone.
Needs to get signed quick or it's going to be a short training camp for Johnson. Hope it's not a ticket selling ploy
World Boxing News: Glen Johnson interested, but says nothing official on George Groves yet
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Johnson beat him

It wouldn't surprise me either, but I favor Groves. Groves put a beating on Andre Dirrell in sparring and he beat James DeGale.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
People said the same things prior to Hopkins/Pavlik. People in the Groves camp ought to remind him of that.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Johnson will give Groves, a hard learning fight which he needs weather it's 10 or 12 rounds, he could
slip up but I expect Groves to win, he may be cut and rocked, as he does mark up a bit.
Not a bad match, and well worth watching.:)

I thought Glenny retired? Groves by schoolage, maybe even a late TKO. Believe...

That's a good prediction going off Johnsons last fight and his 'retirement'. He knows the end is nigh. If he takes the fight it's purely for the money. He doesn't even know who Groves is apparently.
If Johnson has no ambition what so ever he may crumble earlier than most predict once those bombs start bouncing off his head. Hard to imagine as Johnson has always fought with great pride but I think this could be the fight where he realises enough is enough and says "fuck this, I'd rather be laying on a sandy beach sipping cocktails"
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
I thought this was embarrassing when I first heard, Johnson retired on ESPN and looked old. Maybe Groves needs a name fighter but surely someone who had not retired. I Like Groves and wish he was more active.

Never beats anyone ? he beat Roy Jones, Antonio Tarver, Eric Harding, and was named Fighter Of The Year in 2004.
As for the fight the last time i watched Glen Johnson was vs Lucian Bute, he looked old but still durable and tough enough. But checking his record he lost to someother guy i've never heard of. So that obviously isn't good news and it should be a comfortable points win for George Groves.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Its more or less the same Glen as always, he just fades in fights now and his output drops. It'll be tough going for Groves in the first half of the fight.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Never seen this Groves, but this really sucks to hear Glen went back on his retirement and is continuing on.
He's had a great career, a cinderella story and its over.

Agreed, but he isn't exactly getting destroyed and probably has more worthwhile endeavours to put his cash towards than the likes of a Holyfield. I haven't seen Groves either honestly, I just suspect that Johnson isn't the type to put himself in a bad situation, if he can still compete and provide for his family etc this isn't anything tragic. He certainly makes for a stern gatekeeper so this fight probably makes a lot of sense.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
I disagree that this fight is worth it for Groves as far as testing himself goes.
We (supposed boxing fans) just saw Johnson lose to a terrible opponent in Fonfara on FNF's. Albeit Fonfara has stopped Phil Williams and Byron Mitchell recently.
George Groves' career has been so disappointing since the DeGale fight. He was supposed to be fighting for the world title before his injury, now he's fighting a 43 year old journeyman with wins 2 wins in his last 7, and lets face it, now, Glen is just a journeyman, used to be a W on young fighters records!

Yes I know its not that bad really. Just a bit disapointing is all. You are right, far from tragic like Holyfield or Antwun Echols who has lost like 19 straight fights.
Re: George Groves-vs-Grandpa Johnson Dec 15th. Fact.
Not sure Glen Johnson will come here again, he was robbed twice here against Clinton Woods, then a fight was set up with calslappy who pulled out with 'a bad back' at the last minute. At the time I read that the cancellation cost him £100k in expenses as he and his entourage were all in the country. The subsequent rumour that there was nothing wrong with Calslappys back, it was that he had been carted off by the police a week before the fight after a row with his then wife (now replaced by a model).
So don't be surprised if Glen's enthusiasm for coming over here is not as high as our promoters think.

JC, classy as ever ;D
Seriously though, this fight seems so surreal. Watching Johnson vs Hopkins on grainy VHS quality and now seeing him in 2012 in the ring vs George Groves who I've watched a few times as an amateur in York Hall. Very strange, the unlikeliest of meetings from different eras. In his prime, Johnson would be too gritty for Groves in my opinion but if he still has an ounce of that grit left, then he may at least provide a small test for George. At least I hope that's the logic in Groves camp otherwise what's the point?
