Prince naz vs barrera
Growing up watching naz and seeing the tremendous power he had at his weight with hands down all the time and good movement...i thought who could beat this guy!?
After i watched the barrera fight i truly believe he was out boxed and beaten.
Could naz have done anything differently in that fight and why was there no rematch?
The late manny steward mentioned after the fight that naz refused to watch barrera last fights on dvd and did not prepare properly for the fight.
What is your opinion of this fight and was this naz biggest fight and why could he not cope with barrera..
Thank you.

A prime focused naz would beat Barrera for me. As naz got older he got lazy lost the hunger and just relied on his power to win fights, by loading up on his power shots he forgot to box. To big headed for his own good.
Did you not see the documentary about naz in the build up to the barrera fight. He was to busy messing about raver than training. He fought he was going to do what junior jones did to barrera early in his carrera, stop him early.
-
Re: Prince naz vs barrera
the ingles said naz had stopped training properly whilst he was still with them
too big for his own boots
this could all be excuses
either way its a pity because we will never know whether it was naz at his best and his best just wasnt good enough or whether barrera would have got battered fighting naz at his best
im inclined to think naz would have won the fight had they both been at their best :)
-
He also stopped listening to what his corner men where saying in his fights. The jumped up little shit fought he new best.

i was a big naz fan mind so i could be bias

Re: Prince naz vs barrera
I wont say at MAB was unbeatable in that fight, but i think much of what gets loss in the shuffle is that Barrera was anything but what was expected that night. Everyone thought Barrera didnt have a snowballs chance in hell that night because he and his tendency to brawl was tailor made for the heavy leather and odd angles that Hamed threw. Then Barrera pulled off the unexpected and came out and boxed and jaws dropped around the arena. Even from the hardcore Mexican fans in attendance who thought they were watching the wrong fight for a second. If there was a 24/7 series back then, it might have tipped a few people off. I don't think anyone expected it. Watching tapes, may have helped a little but the consensus was that barrera would come out and try to brawl and be there all night for hard punches so Hamed probably slacked off thinking it would take long to sting him and he could rely on his power. We all found out in short order Barrera was not about to let himself suffer the embarrassment of becoming a statistic. For a guy we thought would have been out of there by the 4th round, he was so far ahead on points that he put hamed in a half nelson walked him to the corner and rammed his head into the corner pad for $hits and Giggles. His response to losing a point for it was pretty much the equivalent, was "hell, take 3..."
I imagined the 2 guys who found it least surprising but probably the most funny where Juan Manuel Marquez and Ignacio Beristain, who were conveniently invisible to team Hamed. Just my opinion.

Not really. They were both crying their eyes out for refusing to fight Naz and throwing away a massive career high payday.
Barrera made Marquez and Berstain look bigger mugs than he did Naz. They called Naz out, when they got accepted they turned the fight down, only to watch Barrera reap all the rewards that could have been theirs. Nobody was sicker that night than those two. Fact.
-
Re: Prince naz vs barrera
Hamed was just a face first slugger by this time , throwing power shots with little snap.
was a very very good night watching a craftsman like Marco , humiliate Hamed.
-
Re: Prince naz vs barrera
I think Hamed got to the point were he was so enamored with his power that he thought he was going to just have to catch Barrera once or twice. They seemed to expect the old school face first attacker but instead Barrera came in with a cap & gown and proceeded to school him, topped off with the Greg The hammer Valentine turnbuckle face mash.
-
Okay good feedback, so what exactly happened with the rematch? Was hamed lazy or just not bothered anymore? Why wasnt there a rematch?
-
I think he lost the hunger all together. He had a very poor showing in his comeback fight. I did read he had terrible hands just before he retired and he was in alot of pain in and after his fights. But that could be just an excuse.

True.
Hameds career could have ended sweeet! That loss was such a big loss.
-
Re: Prince naz vs barrera
Saw that documentary where he flew his barber in to cut his hair and Eubanks came to have a talk with him. Also remember Naz wanted goat skin boxing gloves and preferred the ones Barrera was wearing. Naz’s head was so far up his own back side but no one wanted to say to him that he was making a fool out of himself. Wasted a career far too early. It was the end for him as he only ever had 1 fight after that which was dull and he retired.

Cant deny his power and tree trunk legs. Shame he didnt fight on.

He had massive legs which is rare as normally they should be like sticks and the top half built like Evander.

True.
What would you consider to be naz other great wins before the barrera fight?

Re: Prince naz vs barrera
Luisito Espinosa vs Naseem Hamed after he dismantled Kennedy McKinney, would of been great i think Espinosa is one of the few guys around that time that could of beat The Prince.

True.
What would you consider to be naz other great wins before the barrera fight?
Most of his title fights were against good to goodish opposition, he had quite an impressive title reign.
Wilfredo Vasquez
Tom Johnson
Kevin Kelley
Manuel Medina
Steve Robinson
Wayne McCullough
Cesar Soto
That's not a bad list of opponents.

Re: Prince naz vs barrera
If you watch interviews and build up going into the Barrera fight, Hamed said several times he was in the best shape of his life. Both Steward and Suarez didn't think Barrera would see 12, Hamed was so ready. So all them bullshit excuses about Hamed not training are just that. Bullshit excuses. The reason Hamed lost to Barrera was cuz Barrera was the better fighter. It's that simple. And it was always the case. They could of rematched 10 times. And Hamed would of lost 10 times. Barrera went into the Hamed fight having already been in 55 fights. It wasn't even a prime Barrera that beat Hamed's ass. A prime Barrera finishes Hamed inside 5

Physically he wasn't at his best, but technically he did improve as a fighter. He was a bit like B-Hop where he improved with age, if you look at MAB in the 1st Junior Jones fight his defence was shocking and that MAB would of been KO'ed by Hamed.
You can see in the rematch with Junior Jones he started to box more, but he wasn't quite at the level he was vs Hamed. I think the Junior Jones fight helped MAB alot, it showed he wasn't unbeatable and that he had to improve his boxing skills and defence to stay at the top.
-
Re: Prince naz vs barrera
I don't think there was a rematch because of the reactions he was getting from the crowds after the 9/11 attacks. he was getting things thrown at him when he did return for the 1 fight before retiring.
I was a huge Naz fan but I don't think he was beating MAB maybe 2/3 times out of 10.
-
Re: Prince naz vs barrera
Lets keep this real. If prime Barrera fought prime Naz 10 times, the most realistic outcome is....
Barrera wins 2 times by close points decision. Naz wins 2 times by TKO
And Naz wins 6 times by devastating sparked unconcious KO.
I don't see how any serious boxing fan could argue with that. Fact.

This documentary should be shown to all up and coming fighters as a warning to what happens when you swallow too much of your own hype.

Re: Prince naz vs barrera
Naz was great for boxing in a promotional sense, i believe people got carried away with his theatrics and over rated his ability as a fighter beyond belief. The moment he got in the ring with a bonafide A list fighter in Barrera he was belted all over the place. He had skills, he had some ability and he got away with a lot in the ring against fighters that were not elite level. I actually wanted him to win and then fight Morales too, but Barerra toyed with him in this fight. Morales and Marquez would've done the same.
He was just 27 when he fought Barerra, he had a lot of ring experience, he knew this was his chance at world wide superstardom and he blew it in the ring, i'm not buying any of this crap that he wasn't prepared or didn't train hard enough, if this is true then he is guilty of being a complete idiot! Why no rematch? A true champion comes back from defeat and goes onto greater glories, instead this was a case of the Prince who turned back into a toad!

Barrera is my second favourite fighter ever (behind JMM) but this is just silly. Naz didn't train for this fight properly. I still think MAB would have won but please don't be silly and say Naz was in the shape of his life. Naz lost it when he left Ingle and started with that ridiculous two mile wide stance.

Yeah of course. You love em all. But come on, Naz didn't train for MAB properly and you know it. I still would back MAB to win and I love the guy but be real. Even if Naz did train he was getting beat because once he left the Ingles he couldn't handle a second wave attack because his feet were so wide - he was static. A fighter like MAB would always get to him. But be real, Naz was not in the shape of his life for that fight.

Big Mab fan here but Hamed was a freak with those welterweight legs and power from the weirdest angles.

I don't think so. I think Mab beats him 10 out of 10. Just a bad style matchup. No rematch because Hamed went into hiding, fought Calvo and retired.
The late manny steward mentioned after the fight that naz refused to watch barrera last fights on dvd and did not prepare properly for the fight.
Many of the greatest fighters throughout history either never had footage to watch or chose not to watch it. Nothing like studying a guy's style and relegating the camp around that and then a diiferent fighter shows up. Many greats preferred to adjust in the ring.
What is your opinion of this fight and was this naz biggest fight and why could he not cope with barrera..
Good fight. The ring entrance for Hamed was a little long in the tooth but it was a pugilistic tutorial. Hamed was used to fighting the Kelly's and Sanchez's of the world who believed they could stand and trade.
Thank you.
Although I didn't like him very much, at the time I wish he would have stayed on and recovered from his personal loss from that fight. His ego was his downfall.

I would like to know if the is any british fighters past or present you rate at all ?!
Of course. I'm a massive fan of British fighters. Silly question
Drunk and yet not one typo on this post. Did the subject of Hamed suddenly make you sober?
As I said, I'm sober enough to check my spelling.
