The father of a good friend of mine was a huge Basilio fan. Every time we watched the fights together, he would come back to how tough Basilio was, and how much he enjoyed watching him fight. Before he married his wife, one of their first dates was to see a closed circuit broadcast of a Basilio fight. It was a close fight and a brawl broke out before the decision was read, so he had to get his wife out of there, and then read the newspaper the next day to find out who won.

A great photo of a great moment, but the photo I remember of Basillo is of him setting on his corner stool looking out of the ring over his shoulder, with the largest hematoma on his forehead I had ever seen. The second Sugar Ray fight I think, the swelling on Basillo's head was unforgettable. A real warrior and tough as a nail. RIPQuote:

Basillo was a tough no nonsense type of man. Demanded respect, and when he didn't get it from the great Sugar Ray, he made a vow that he would beat him in the ring.
Don't make em like Basillio or that generation anymore. Don't think they ever will again.
