Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout - Saturday night fight/chat thread
:action: I like this match-up Saturday night, this should be a good test for both pugs.
Dec. 1
At New York (Showtime): Austin Trout vs. Miguel Cotto, 12 rounds, for Trout's WBA "regular" junior middleweight title; Jayson Velez vs. Salvador Sanchez II, 10 rounds, junior lightweights; Daniel Jacobs vs. Chris Fitzpatrick, 10 rounds, middleweights.
Unless he's shot after the fight with Floyd Jr., I've gotta go with Cotto, just on the huge advantage in experience in title fights alone. Trout is undefeated, 25-0 (14 KO), but he doesn't have enough power to cause Miguel any grief, and I don't believe Trout will outbox him. Cotto by UD, or a TKO in the later rounds. (I wonder who Diane will be pulling for? ;) )
Who ya'll got in this one?
:drunks:

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
I'll be cheering my ass off for Cotto but I have this feeling Trout is going to win this in what some fans will perceive as an upset.

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
I don't think Cotto's shot at all... matter of fact I think his career has been rejuvenated a bit with the presence of Pedro Diaz in his corner. Trout doesn't seem to bring that much to the table. I also see a Cotto UD or maybe late TKO.

How long do you think it will be before VD shows up and predicts Austin will kick Cotto's ass. lmao.

I could see Austin boxing his way to a close decision win, but I really doubt it. I believe Miguel is going to be too much for Trout to handle.

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
This is a ballsy fight for Cotto. It's high risk. A fight I didn't think he would take at this stage in his career. Credit to him for taking it. A loss takes him out of the running for a Paquiao/Martinez/Canelo PPV.

;D ;D
No... VD won't leave himself open like that. He'll discredit Trout beforehand, saying he's a bum. That way, if Cotto posts an impressive victory, VD can come in and brush it off as meaningless.

Trout's a southpaw and a bit awkward-looking at times. And he's got the size and youth advantage on Cotto. But Cotto under Pedro Diaz, to me, has upped his game, and added a few years to his career. Anything's possible in a prizefight... but I see Trout's chances as pretty slim.

I think it was a mistake for Cotto to take this fight. Cotto has improved greatly especially defensively under Diaz but Trout is a real spoiler here.

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
Nothing like a literal crossroads fight. I gotta go Cotto with big fight experience and his improved jabbing, just a deeper guy..though yes, a bit battle worn. A part of me didn't like the way he was talking in lead up, almost...almost sounded like a guy settled with one foot out the door of the game. He has to look at Trout as every bit a threat as a Manny etc. No tomorrows. Trout is a low key guy and a definite cutey style with the future at his feet. He'll need to step up in activity and keep his head if he hopes to win...not coast and leave the crowd booing like last time. You have to stamp out Cotto to beat him, be a constant. I don't think Trout has that from what I've seen yet.
-
I'll be at MSG for this one. My 4th Cotto MSG fight.
I think Trout is a very live underdog and his southpaw stance will give Cotto trouble since Cotto relies so heavily on his left hand.
That being said, I'm picking Cotto and you have to assume he'll get the benefit of any close rounds in
NYC.
Awful undercard btw. Shame on Golden Boy and Showtime.

You've always got to wonder too, how much Cotto has left in the tank after being in so many wars, but i've gotta believe that Miguel will have more then enough left to take care of business against Trout. This is by far Trout's biggest challenge, and Cotto has a huge advantage in championship experience and the competition he's faced.

I'm hoping Cotto takes it too but you're right, the chances are that Trout will win a close decision.
Cotto has been in a lot of wars and is probably too faded at this point, although a few years ago he would have definitely beaten a fighter on Trout's level.
-
Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
I just watched some of Trout's last fight on Youtube. He's fighting a guy who lost three of his last six and still didn't look anything special. Cotto has been operating at a completely different level and even if he is a little on the slide he should beat Trout.

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
This is on Box Nation, another 5 am finish for me. Go Cotto, he is the smaller man but we all like the under dog right?

I don't believe Cotto is the underdog, at least not in the betting odds. Trout has the WBA "regular" junior middleweight title so it will be up to Cotto to take it from him, but Cotto is hardly the underdog, that would have to be Trout, and I don't think this fight will go "swimmingly" for him. ;)

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
This is a classic upset the apple cart fight. I'm sure that Cotto/Alvarez has already been penciled in for May 5th. Trout has looked bored in some previous fights. This is different. He views it as a torch pass or coming out party and has the fundamentals and a pretty sound boxing brain based on his commentating at fights recently. I'm a hard core Cotto fan and also think Trouts timing for this fight is perfect.

I sort of agree, and it's possible that Cotto has lost a step or 2 after all the wars he been in. The thing is, how good is Trout? And how will he do against a world class opponent like Cotto, who's been there done that already. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
-
Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
I think Trout is being way overlooked by most of you guys. He's no prodigy but he doesn't need to be in this fight. He has a good enough jab and reach advantage to control this fight. Cotto will start throwing low blows around the 4th round. Trout will win on the Saddo scorecards, but not on judges score sheet. If Cotto wins this convincingly in my book it's a very solid win. It's actually pretty brave for a comeback fight.
-
Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
I see Cotto giving Trout a lesson here. It's a great fight, but I've seen Trout a few times and I haven't seen anything that makes me think he can beat even a 50% Cotto.
-
Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
Cotto is a better fighter, at light-middle he's strong he gave Floyd a good fight, I have not seen a lot of
Trout, but he is undefeated and hungry. I go for Cotto but it may not be easy,! could be a good fight
this one.:)
-
Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout Saturday on Showtime
Another good fight ,this i think will be a pretty close one, hope Miguel can pull out the win.
Glad its on Boxnation.

Trout is a good boxer, but Cotto is still elite. He's coming off a narrow loss to Mayweather in which he really pushed Floyd like no one has in years.
Its true Cotto could be getting a little long in the tooth, but I still think he will beat Trout, who remains unproven at Cotto's level.
Won't be easy, but Cotto is still Cotto.

Agree 100%.
I'm picking Cotto by decision but I think it's a dangerous fight for him.

I agree, Trout is the big question, I haven't seen enough of him to know how he will do against Cotto.
I'm really interested in this fight, can't wait!

Cotto 153.6
Trout had to shed his underwear to make 154 even.

Hey Diane,
You're going to have to get an updated Sig of your heart-throb, looks like Miguel has added about a dozen or more new tattoos, is the circus in town? ;)

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout - Saturday night fight/chat thread
Once again my boy Cotto being counted out...
He's been here before how many times?
Think how far back he's been labeled as done, damaged goods or not good enough to beat the top guys?
I see Austin as your typical "robotic" fighter fighter who does everything to the book. He doesn't have angles, he doesn't have waist movement and his ring generalship lacks. Aside from being younger I don't believe he posses any skills that will trouble Cotto.
All Cotto has to do is show up and fight his fight. Cotto wins.

Re: Miguel Cotto vs Austin Trout - Saturday night fight/chat thread
Fighters don't come any more overrated than Austin Trout. He has talent. That's obvious. But he's not an elite fighter. I see nothing in him to make me think he has a chance of beating Miguel Cotto. I'm expecting Cotto to smash him. And smash him badly.
