Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
He's posted it on facebook.
Not surprised. Alvarez's cherry picking continues. I hope Cotto pulls one last legacy performance out and kicks the shit out of him just as a matter of principle. At least his style is suited for Cotto.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
I'm not gonna get on anybody's case over this. Trout has just won the title, and Canelo is a pup. Let it stew for a while.
Can't all be like Froch.

Saw it coming but when the hell did alvarez face a true light mw last???
-
Golden boy need to make more money from the ginger boy before putting him in with trout.

I knew this was coming also but it still kinda bugs me. Floyd vs Guerrero will no doubt be announced at the same time.
He has yet to face a true jr mid.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
So transparent its just flat fk'n wrong. This isn't cherry picking, its grave robbing. For a guy who was putting Floyd name in his mouth and complaining its time to stop manufacturing opponents, cut this "he's still learning...pat-pat" and sac up! Pathetic.

No official announcement yet. They are no doubt waiting on Floyd to make it a double.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
It's like Alvarez gets hate for being good at a young age. The expectations placed on Alvarez are ridiculously high. And there made that high for the purpose of seeing him fail. He's already at an accelerated pace. What more muthafukkas want? He's 22 years old. He has an outstanding resume for a 22 year old. At 22 Cotto was fighting Sammy Sparkman. And he went to the muthafukkin Olympics

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
The fact that people are actually trying to spin this as a legit fight shows what years of having boxing's bullshit shovelled down our throats have done to certain people.
Cotto has lost 2 in a row. Convincingly. A guy who lost two in a row shouldn't be rewarded with a megafight. That's absolutely rediculous.
This is exactly why people don't give a shit about boxing. This is why people know the names of the guys on UFC undercards, but would struggle to name a boxing champion outside of Mayweather or Pacquaio.
We should be demanding more out of our sport. If you are trying to justify this fight, shame on you.

Blah, blah, blah...... do we have to go over this once again ;). We debated this for about 3 hours Saturday night. Just because he might have fought what you consider better opponents, doesn't mean that beating those opponents has earned him the right to a big pay day yet. I mean seriously, who has he really beaten that was a serious threat to him? He still needs to prove himself by fighting & winning against guys like Trout, Angulo, Kirkland or Molina. Being young has nothing to do with it. Golden Boy has just created a hype machine, and expects all of us to bow down & believe it.

The fact that people wanna watch him is why he deserves big pay. It's that simple. Money is what dictates everything in boxing. And why does the name Kirkland keep coming up as someone he should be fighting? Kirkland had his chance. And he backed out. He doesn't wanna fight Alverez. Yet his names is always brought up.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
how is cotto a cherry picked opponent? he has been one of the worlds best at any weight over the last 10 years
who do you want him to fight?
-
Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
It's not cool for a so called champ to pick a fight with a man who has just put in one of his career worst performances. Alvarez habitually does this and thus I have no interest in the chap.

It was his 8th pro fight. Canelo's 8th pro fight was against some guy who was 4-5 over in Jalisco, Mexico.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
Cotto isn't even 154 pound fighter really. He went there because of the Pac fight and shouldn't have been there. His first real fight showed him up and he is a bit like Hatton in that he cannot make that extra jump (Hatton to WW obviously). He just isn't big enough. It's all well and good against the likes of Foreman, but maybe a better example is Mosley. Mosley wasn't a 154 pound fighter either.

He's coming off of two losses and is damaged goods at this point. His last fight was so bad that people are talking about whether or not he should retire.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
It's a fight that will make a lot of money so it's going to get made, or at least it looks like it. I don't see what the problem is. Alvarez is only young and he's fighting the best pound for pound guy in the world in September so the more seasoning he can get along with the biggest paydays before then is all good for him.
Trout he could easily lose to and then the boxing industry doesn't get a massive event in September.

Not bad for a 16 year old

No, not bad at all. And I don't discredit Canelo as I do JCC Jr. My response was to your dig at Cotto for fighting Sparkman at 22..... when in actuality very few fighters out there began fighting the quality of opposition Cotto did by the time he had reached his 20th pro fight.

Size is a factor, of course, but the truth is Cotto simply isn't good enough and styles make fights. I like Cotto, and he was terrific entertainment, but at none of the three weights he has fought at has he beaten an exceptional fighter save an ageing Mosley.

Brother, it's a set up and that's all it is. I as a fan want to see him fight the best available opponent, earn a way to a mega fight instead of tip toe through with paid infomercials. When did we start settling for this? Really? If he is letting a thought of losing to Trout, forget the money, enter his mind with a possible go with Mayweather on deck...he doesn't need to be fighting Mayweather. Boxing IS a business but what fighter thinks like that in the first place? I don't care about his check book and care less about paying to see guys who do not fight reasonable opposition when it is due and earned. He will get no seasoning from Cotto at this point and face nothing like a shifty and cutey style he would gain from Trout going into a more similiar Mayweather fight. He'll only gain a paycheck and comfort that well rested 0 on his record.
Not railing on you bro, just sick and tired of guys being treated like they get to wear a Championship into the ring drinking out of a juice box. He's not a child, he's a man in a mans sport. Save that non ama stuff too. You know what guys with ama fights had also? Losses! Lots of them. It's on him if he didn't have ama fights. So what. You wanna learn as you go and face guys two or three times early who park cars part time, fine but it's fair game.

Re: Steve Forbes:Cotto in Mexico signing Alvarez fight
The big problem is promoters sell these fighters as the next big thing and mention their names with the elite and then spoon feed their fighter easy opposition. I think Alvarez is a superb fighter, but GBP were treating him like he was about to become a mega star before the Matthew Hatton fight. Of course, they had to create a star to counter-act Arum and the kid is a talented ticket seller. I think Chavez & Alvarez get a little more heat because their are so many Mexican legends that have been warriors and fought quality opposition so the world expects a bit more.

I agree he's been a manufactured champion (Matthew Hatton moving up in weight in a world title fight :D) and he hasn't been tested yet. But he's a massive star with boxing's biggest demographic and potentially a goldmine if he's handled right. And part of handling him right is not letting him take a loss against a tricky southpaw like Trout. His first loss is going to be in a Mayweather fight and then he's going to be carefully rebuilt into another massive fight. It's not going to make everybody happy that he doesn't beat some credible competition on the way to a Mayweather fight but at least he's going to get tested at some point.
