Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
What in the world ...
Exclusive - Steve Collins set for sensational ring return against Roy Jones Jr.
Steve Collins has sensationally announced he is return to the ring to fight Roy Jones Jr.
The former WBO middleweight and super middleweight champion has not fought since 1997, but now plans to step back through the ropes to take on the American legend.
The pair were reportedly ready to fight on several occasions during the 90s, but Collins believes his rival always came up with an excuse to dodge him.
But the Irishman now looks set to get his chance to prove himself against the four-time world champion, who won 55 of his 63 professional contests.
Collins, now 48, told Keys and Gray: “It’s not a comeback as such, at my age I’m too old for that, but it will be the end of a 15-year grudge.
“It’s a fight Roy Jones needs. He claims to be one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters around but he refused to fight me.
“I was very happy with my career, but the one fight I wanted was Roy Jones, and when that didn’t happen I retired. To me he was afraid of me. I don’t think he’s a coward, but at the time he was!
“But now it’s happening. I spoke to Roy and we’re going to get it on. He wants one more fight before he retires and this is the one he wants.
“If we get a good offer we’ll split it down the middle and get it on.
“I would like 10-12 weeks to get ready. In my mind I already see how that fight goes and I can see the outcome. I feel like I’ve never been away. I’m looking forward to it.
“This is still a match. We’re the same generation. I wouldn’t even consider fighting as guy 15 or 20 years younger than me, because that’s not a match. But we’re the same age and this is affair match. It won’t be any different to how it would have been 15 years ago.
“I’d love the fight to be in the UK but there is interest from Dubai, Russia, China. Dubai looks the favourite, but we’ll have to see where the offers come from.
“Hopefully we’ll get an offer that’s suitable for us both and we get it on. It will give all old-timers some hopes!”
Collins, however, insists he is not stupid enough to risk his health in one last chase for glory.
“I’ve got medical tests arranged and if I don’t get a 100% pass form the doctors, then forget it,” he added. “There’s no way I’ll fight if I don’t get the all-clear.”

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
I just finished reading that Shane Mosley "un-retired", and now this.
Personally, I don't make much of it.
Has Roy Jones even been informed he's fighting Collins?
What I don't get is the "It's a fight Roy Jones needs."
Used car salesmen across the world.... take notes.

Already posted a thread on this a month ago.
Look for Collins to get the early ko.
Collins will be very fresh.
The fight will be in Dubai mark my words
-
Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
i think jones will win by KO :)
-
No way. Jones is too easy to hit. Collins will never lose his chin. Love jones and hate Collins but Collins at this point will be to well rounded in every department

Collins hasn't fought in 16 years, I agree. I bet he is well round.

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Awesome news, I wish this happened more often. Boxing was crying out for a big fight like this. I'm hoping that Floyd vs. Manny happens in 20 years time rather than now as it'd have way more relevence then.

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
i seemed to remember steve collins trying to get in shape for a fight with calzaghe after he had retired and breaking down with head pains, stay retired steve your health is the most important thing.
-
Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Roy will destroy Collins, at least Jones has been active. Silly and dangerous fight which is meaningless.
-
Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
??? I got nothing. Same as Collins and Jones jr.
Carnival act.

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Collins is messed up in the head
He hasn't fought since 97 and now 16 years later wants to fight in a professional bout with an opponent who is still dangerous?
This fight won't even generate any money so I don't see any reason for him to do it
RJJ must've gotten punched one to many times in the head as well ... he should've retired 10 years ago himself
If they fought in the 90s he would've just been another bum that Roy embarrassed ... especially at 168. I didn't even know who this guy was or if he had ever won anything until I googled him ... he won a WBO strap at 168 but he's pretty much a nobody

You didn't know who he was? He dethroned Eubank, and beat him in the rematch. He beat Benn twice too. He was hardly a bum or a nobody just because you didn't know him.
-
Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
I think after 16 years Collins might have a bit of ring rust! ;D I think Collins will gas he is way to old to comeback and compete in the pro's.

Collins was a strong celtic warrior but Eubank and benn were not in there prime.
Benn was never the same after gerald mcclellan and eubank not the same fighter after the second benn fight, he might have won a few after but he was not mentally right.

Great start to 2013. First Malinaggi Mosley and now this atrocity. The hits just keep on coming.

Eh I honestly didn't know who he was ... I do remember him being brought up as a potential opponent for Roy maybe once ... maybe it would've been competitive then but now he hasn't fought in nearly 2 decades so there is no point

1 million was mentioned for this mismatch/joke

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
This silly shit wont happen.
Dubai? They always schedule these freakshow matches for Dubai. Tyson, Holyfield, Naz, Roy have all been linked with spectacular comebacks in Dubai over the years, did they ever happen?

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
If John "The Golden Greek" Tolos and "Killer" Kowalski could, in their late 60s, get together to fight in a no ropes, exploding ring death match, then these two sissies should be able to fight with padded gloves on. At least they won't blown up or be set aflame.

For a guy that hypes up Roy's resume and slates Floyd's, you are remarkably lacking in background knowledge on your hero's peers.
Collins was regarded by many as the number two fighter at 168lbs in late '95 behind Roy. Naturally Roy opted to fight former 140lb contender Vinny Paz instead.

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
Collins would have had the toughness and skills to stay with RJJ back in the day but would likely have lost a wide UD.
I can't see Collins winning this if it ever happens. Im sure he has been enjoying life since he retired and if he speaks to Hatton it takes more than a 3 month camp to get fighting fit. I can imagine him being horrendously slow, lacking any co-ordination but still able to take a beating until his body just can't take it anymore.
Will be a good build up and the fight might be entertaining, just going to enjoy it if it happens. Both old enough to make their own decisions and aint like they are saying they are going to be P4P stars afterwards. Collins obviously needs to lay something to rest for his own peace of mind.

DM was always brought up as the second best, not Collins.
Roy fought everyone that was available at the time ... he's not like Mayweather who conveniently decides its time to "retire" or take a "vacation" every time a new challenger arises, like Cotto back in 06/07. Mayweather decided not to fight Margarito for $8M and paid him $750K in "step aside" money.

I had no idea you were such a pro wrestling fan.
Was this match in Japan ?
Sounds like it.

Re: Steve Collins vs. Roy Jones Jr.
This is meaningless and I seriously but SERIOUsLY hope that Jones is only doing it in order to retire on a victory and call it a day.

DM was #2 at 175lbs. Collins was #2 at 168lbs as Bob stated. Where you cryogenically frozen in the 90's?

By DM, I assume you mean Darius Michalczewski, who didn't have a single fight at 168lbs.

Floyd paid his way out of a contract with Arum because Arum was fleecing him of money, and refused to consider the Oscar fight as he wanted Cotto (Are you aware of the Golden boy-Arum feud?)
I'll quote Arum here "That's not in the cards," Arum said. "He wants $20 million for the De La Hoya fight? It's not there. Sometimes, my man, you gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em. We'll talk about things down the road."
Floyd fought Oscar in his next fight as a free agent, making $25 million. Arum also stated he would offer Floyd Hatton and Cotto, but that those fights were only $7 million each for Floyd. Floyd followed up the Oscar win with the Hatton fight, and made $25 million. Floyd eventually fought Cotto for $40 million.
Haven't you noticed after the split with Top Rank he never fought one of their fighters again? You're very naive if you think it is simply a matter of one fighter not wanting to fight another out of fear of losing.

Just to add to this point, does Tysonbomb believe Margarito had a hope in hell of beating Floyd Mayweather Jr? I remember back in the day when people were saying Floyd was "scared" of Tony and I just found the whole thing laughable. At the time, Tony had the least important belt and hadn't beaten a 'big name' that solidified his status. Floyd would have boxed his ears off.
