Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Here's a good Malignaggi interview. 14 minutes long but it's worth watching.
Malignaggi Unleashed: Jabs Broner, Thurman and HBO - Boxing News

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Very silly fight which leaves Broner way out of his weight class should he win. They have slowly been developing Broners career and they then do this.
-
Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
147 is dumb I'm saying this won't happen, but if it does you can't say nothing, a fighter has the right to fight in whatever division he wants, people don't complain when their fighter does it but it's a problem when anyone else does. Really Broner should fight 3 times at 135 move to 140 and than fight there for 2 years than be at 147 for good, GB can't be this dumb.
-
Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
I have predicted that Broner would be at 147 by xmas of this year so a fight with Paulie is not out of the question sooner if they cant get Burns. Broner is a massive freakin lightweight and would be much bigger then Paulie at 147 if they ever fought. Drop the size thing right off the bat. Malignaggi is not bigger then Broner.
-
Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Wow Schaefer says it's set what garbage, let's be honest people will always dump on Broner but this is legit the dumbest fight humanly possible.
-
Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
This match intrigues me. Its a bit out of left field and you certainly have to favor Broner.
However, I've come to like Malinaggi as he is a slick boxer and one tough SOB.
I believe Broner will discover his KO power will be considerably diminished at welterweight. Paulie has a chance to put him in his place. Then I recall how much Paulie was outclassed and outquicked by Amir Khan and I start thinking the same thing may happen....:-\

Do you think he's chasing Floyd?
I have no doubts about Broner beating Paulie. If this fight happens who are you picking?
Yes, great and all knowing Inuit person, you are the man again because you did pick Hopkins over Cloud. That seems like 10 of 11, right?

I can't see Broner fighting Mayweather, the contract he wants to sign with HBO will give him 2 million a fight, why would he risk so much when there is no way he will get a huge payday from Floyd, Mayweather seems to have found money in fighting Mexicans and I don't think that will change.
-
Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Honestly my first question is whats the undercard? I half feel bad for Paulie as hes been playing musical opponents for months now. No Cano rematch who beat him, no Hatton, thankfully the ghost of Mosleys ghost fell through, and now Broner who frankly has been a jr/welts in a lightweight body his last couple of fights. They are banking on Paulie being battle worn with no punch and whos legs have grown iffy. A shortcut to grab a trinket with high profile to bigger paydays. But Paulie is a very smart boxing mind also and Broner still makes mistakes.
-
-
Silly move, he should wait to fight Burns, why is he skipping 140? There's so many good fights to be made there as well.

Yeah get a grip One Time. Burns would fight Broner. I think Warren wants to avoid the fight though. He criticised Eddier Hearn for taking his fighters to America but it's because he believes in their ability. Warren has no faith so if it were up to him, he'd have Burns defending his World title against as many bums as he could find. If Burns leaves Warren for Matchroom, you can bet Burns will be pushing for the Broner fight.

He could have went to America and got the biggest payday of his career, now to me the only fight that realistically we need to see from Broner is Abril.

I agree, but burns has battled to were he is and he's got a nice little thing going. Don't blame him for not taking on Broner.

If he wants to make a billion dollars in boxing, like he has stated, he will have to fight for more than two mil a fight. LOL
Look, he is going to wind up promoting, his goal is to be bigger than everyone in boxing.
Have no idea if he would ever fight Floyd, but all he has to do is look like he wants to, and his name will be linked to Floyd's.
After boxing Broner will probably begin the rapification of the known universe. You have to admire Broner, he's no piker, he dreams BIG.
I do think that Broner believes he can beat Floyd.

Khan - Broner IMO would be a good fight, I'd favour Broner but if Khan could box him he would cause problems for Broner, Khan would cause problems for any fighter but as we all know his chin might not hold up. I personally was hoping would move up to fight Garcia or Matthysse or Peterson, they would be great fights.

A good one. You are the man!

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Lol@ ducking Khan.
This is not a done deal and Broner has also stated in the same week that he wants Burns. If he cant get the Burns fight in this distorted market place they he might as well jump up into the money. That is what Mosley did, Floyd etc etc. In addition many fighters prefer the more prestigious divisions or those from the original 8. Hell I do as a fan.

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Schaefer on Broner-Malignaggi Being Done, Burns Not - Boxing News
Quote:
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is expecting some fireworks in the ring, and during the pre-fight promotions, when Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) leaves the WBC lightweight title behind and jumps up by two weight divisions to challenge Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KOs) for the WBA welterweight crown in an HBO televised main event on June 22 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
"Two real exciting talkers, two of the best talkers in the sport and I think it's really going to be an exciting fight. Each one deserves credit here. We have some media members who are picking Paulie here, saying it's too much, too soon for Broner - that Paulie is too big. And then you have others who are saying that Broner is just going to walk through Paulie. It's an evenly matched fight. Some people called me when we were thinking about that fight and were telling me 'Broner is never going to do that, Paulie is too big.' So I have to give it up to Broner for stepping up to the plate and to Paulie for taking on one of boxing's youngest and most talked about stars," Schaefer said.
There was some talk of doing Broner on June 15th against WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, but Schaefer states that Scottish boxer missed his opportunity and also has contractual issues with current promoter Frank Warren.
"No [we are not considering Burns], because we have agreed to terms with both fighters [Broner and Malignaggi]. We have been chasing Ricky Burns for a while, offered him a lot of money and he didn't want to do it. Now he says he's a free agent but its not so easy to just hold a press conference or make a statement that you're a free agent. It doesn't work like that. I think Frank Warren thinks a bit different and Frank Warren sent me documents that clearly shows that he still has him under contract," Schaefer said.

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
Cant blame him. He cant wait forever. Arum wont let Gamboa off leash either so....

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
I still feel Broner should clean out 135 (Burns, Vasquez or Abril) & then move to 140, before even contemplating welter
If this fight happens its Broner all day

Who knows what Broner is up to? I'm starting to enjoy the way he stays two steps ahead of everyone though.
Could HBO be pissed at Floyd for taking off? Could they be siccing Broner on Floyd in an attempt to embarrass Floyd? Nah, HBO is too big to endulge in petty stuff like that, aren't they?
Whatever is going on, I'm a lot more interested than I was a couple of days ago.
How about you?

Definitely interested to see the next step after this fight
Does Paulie working for Showtime & this fight possibly being on HBO cause any issues?
Looking like some awesome potential fights at 147 in the future...

For those who hate this kid I suppose there is nothing he can do.
He's tried for Burns twice in two different weight classes.
There was hope that it could be done after Ricky split from Warren. It appears now that the split was not as clean as it seemed and that Warren may have legal standing. Burns could be in court and in limbo for the next year or more. Gamboa is on the slow boat to irrelevance.
No rule exists that he must stop at every half division along the way. If he wants to bypass 140 then so be it. He's still moving up 2 divisions to a direct title shot. Not unlike guys like Armstrong, Floyd, Manny and countless others. Yes its a trinket and I share your pain in that regard but they are all trinkets. To bad Paulie cant crack an egg yolk because his movement and speed could possibly bring Broner out of his comfort zone.

@IamInuit - That's another reason the fight is unwatchable for me, besides Pauli having no power, his fights are snoozers. Pauli vs. broner? That's a horrible matchup.
But to tell you the truth, I just can't stand looking at broner and I won't do a fight/chat thread no-matter who he's fighting. The only broner fight I ever plan on watching is a re-play of a fight when he gets his puny ass kicked.

Broner is doing nothing different then many that have came before him.

As long as Broner keeps the sideshow out of the ring I don't have a problem with him.

With respect. Just because it's the same doesn't make it right or agreeable.
I'm not arguing, just stating the obvious.

Re: Broner vs Malignaggi in June for WBA title
After his last fight Broner said he was going to stay at 135 for a fight or two them move up to 140. Now he's going straight to 147 and will probably beat Paulie and own a belt at welter. How many fights does he have left at HBO? If he moves to Showtime then probably they're looking to put him in with Floyd at some point. He skips the logjam (and a possible defeat) at 140, gets a Paulie title fight and can then handpick his opponents while running his mouth and creating enough buzz to get a fight with Floyd. Or maybe he stays at HBO, gets a Paulie title fight and then handpicks his opponents at two million a pop ( if this contract story is true.) If he wants to make serious PPV money though he needs to fight and beat Floyd before somebody else does.

Please no. It would be like Lenin being replaced by Stalin. Or Simon Cowell by Piers Morgan. There is no God.
