Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
:pimp2: Rios vs. Alvarado, should be another war next Saturday on HBO.
:feedme:
March 30th
At Las Vegas (HBO): Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado, rematch, 12 rounds, for vacant WBO interim junior werlterweight title; Terrance Crawford vs. Breidis Prescott, 10 rounds, junior welterweights; Jose Ramirez vs. Charles Dubray, 4 rounds, lightweights.
Rios knows he can stop Alvarado now, and I figure he'll do it a little quicker this time, Rios by 6th round TKO.
:drunks:
-
I can't wait for this rematch, IMO it was fight of the year last year, it was better than Pacquiao - Marquez 4. I think Alvarado was hurt when he got stopped but maybe he could have carried on for a bit longer, it was a very close war and I am expecting the same again. Alvarado IMO can box better than he did the first time around , he got drawn into a war, which was no doubt entertaining but that type of fight was more suited for Rios hence why he won the fight.
If Alvarado can box more he will have a better chance of winning, but I think it will just turn into another war with Rios winning another stoppage victory. Alvarado does have to not get involved as much on the inside though if he wants to take rounds.

Alvarado was done, the ref stopped it just before Rios was going to knock him out:

Good stoppage, Alvarado, lives to fight another day and gets a rematch.

He was on the way out I do agree, but maybe in Alvarados eyes he might have preferred to put knocked out instead of being stopped? I do agree he lives to fight another day and the referee did the right thing, but fighters have pride and some dont like being stopped, maybe that could have been the case for Alvarado.

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
Rios is a great brawler but his skill set is massively overrated. I think he'll probably win this but I'd expect he gets easily oitboxed when he steps up.

When he steps up?, who the fuck is he going to step up to at Jr. Welterweight?
As for being massively overrated, kind of like you on this forum.

Well warriors like Mike Alvarado will go out on their shield, but a good ref will stop the fight before they get seriously hurt. Mike, protested a little bit, but he was looking defenseless, and Rios was going in for the kill, the ref did exactly the right thing.
I'll be surprised we see a different result in the rematch, I believe Rios will end it even earlier this time.

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
Both of these guys sponge more than a Sunday afternoon carwash. First fight was awesome but Alvarado isn't a backfoot boxer and I think he will try to be based on first few rounds, but he has always swaped shots in the end.
I cannot get away from thinking Rios will walk right through him, brutally and early in rematch. Its not that Rios improves but he at least knows his identity and has come to terms with being a punching bag throwing bricks.

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
Have to agree with the consensus. Rios beats Alvardo again. I personally think Rios is overrated, but don't think Alvardo is the man to expose him.

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
This is the first packed fight weekend of the year. Rios-Alvardo, Erdei-Grachev & Rodriquez-Maderna & Golovkin-Ishida, Chilemba-Bellew & Crolla-Matthews in ONE weekend. Finally.
One of the more intriguing fights for me is Chilemba-Bellew.

Eh, why is he overrated? He's every bit as good as the other top Jr. welters, including Peterson, D. Garcia and Lucas Matthysse, et al, so I don't get this "massively" overrated bullshit.
BTW, I believe Rios hands little boner his ass.

He should have lost to Abril but got a gift if a decision. I agree he is not that good a technical boxer and someone with good skills could beat him. But in the division at the moment he give anyone a fight. I reckon he beats Peterson and Garcia and loses to Matthysse in a war. That's the top 3 in the division. I think he loses easily to Broner

Thank you, but he's not "overrated", and he's good at what he does. As for little boner, Rios kicks his punk ass.

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
I rewatched the first fight recently. I scored it the same as Lederman. Rios edged the first but then basically lost every round except the one he stopped Alvarado in. Alvarado boxed as much as he could in the first fight and the second fight will be very similar to the first. Rios wins an entertaining brawl, it may be quicker or longer than episode one lasted. Can't wait to watch it though.

If I remember right, didn't Rios have some issues, like being weight drained for the Abril fight? I'm not making excuses for Rios, just saying i've never seen him look as bad, and I believe he would kick Abril's ass in a rematch.

Not for 12 rounds they can't. Lamont I have no doubt won't fight him. He saw how Rios broke his brother down and made him look for a way out

He didn't look great against Alvarado until the end of the penultimate round when he finally landed a few big punches. Maybe he gets through a lot faster this time. Really looking forward to this one even if I have to watch it on a stream.

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
Rios is an almighty twat who repeatedly failed to come in at the agreed weight with both Murray and Abril. He is a dumb boxer and an even dumber individual. As soon as he fights anyone with the sense to outbox him or the patience to counter him he gets annihilated. Rios is a punk. Matthhysse sparks him, Broner sparks him, Marquez sparks him in double quick time.

Maybe overrated is a bit unfair. He's a good top ten junior welterweight. In my opinion, Rios is very beatable by a decent boxer, as we saw with Abril. He's been matched conveniently thus far, other than Abril.
Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and assume though he is more suited to being a junior welterweight. The problem is that all the best junior welterweights are in GB's stable. Also, I'm unconvinced that he will be more effective at higher weights--he may have been more threatening when he could physically impose himself at the lower weights. Physicality is a big part of Rios' game.
I will say that I like Rios' inside fighting skills. He's pretty stellar on the inside, using his shoulders etc.
-
Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
That can only be an exciting fight, no matter the ending. I personally fear a copy/paste of the first bout but the idealist in me thinks that Alvarado, with a few adjustments could edge that one.

I'm not a big fan of Rios by any stretch, but he's much more then just "a good top ten junior welterweight".
I put him on a paar with the top dogs @ Jr. Welterweight.

Toss the adjustments out the window, Rios is just too strong for Alvarado.

Look at his fights with Anthony Peterson and Miguel Acosta to see what happens when fighters try to outbox him. And don't make a fool of yourself by saying they weren't good fighters

They land on his over exposed chin and head again and again. Hooks , uppercuts, lazy jabs it's like someone forgot to give you a knackered air rifle at the coconut shy and you can't miss. Sometimes they catch him with a low blow and he almost crys after dropping. Bam Bam ? Bum Bum is more like it.

I reckon I don't see Rios the same way you do and from the sounds of it, you'll be gleeful if Rios loses to Alvarado Saturday night. :-\

Like both these fighters, don't really care who wins. Looking forward to another genuine slugfest.

It would also be good for boxing if a fighter who has avoided nobody and travelled abroad many times, is given the credit,
should he win clearly on points, and not have to face accusations of a home town desicion, just because he hasn't knocked Bute out.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But isn't Froch the same fighter who would of been stripped of his title if he didn't fight Jermaine Taylor? Isn't Froch the same fighter who bitched and complained that he had to face Mikkel Kessler in Denmark? Even using a volcano eruption as an excuse to try and get out of the fight? Isn't Froch the same fighter who threatened to pull out and even retire if he couldn't face Arthur Abraham in Nottingham? Isn't Froch the same fighter who had to be threatened with legal action in order to reach a compromise and face Abraham in Switzerland?
You are wrong, but there is no need for me to correct you.
So no I did not guess that Frock would stop Bute so emphatically. I said should he would win on points give the guy some credit. Never did I claim to be an expert like your good self. Liar? What exactly am I lying about ?

Really I have not seen it. Are you really Frank Warren?

Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
I like Alvarado and he showed great heart in his match with Prescott. However, I really think its hard to imagine him winning this rematch UNLESS he boxes the whole way or 90% of the way. Like Gatti did in the second fight with Ward.
-
Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
I agree with Teddy. Rios dominates. Alvarado is not a backfoot boxer, never has been.
-
Re: Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II - Saturday night fight/chat thread
:pimp2: Rios vs Alvarado II starts @10:15 PM ET on HBO Saturday night in North America, and @3:15 AM on Box Nation? in the UK/Europe.
March 30
At Las Vegas (HBO): Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado, rematch, 12 rounds, for vacant WBO interim junior werlterweight title; Terrance Crawford vs. Breidis Prescott, 10 rounds, junior welterweights; Miguel Berchelt vs. Carlos Claudio, 8 rounds.
If Rios wins, which I expect, I hope he calls out the Lucas Matthysse/Lamont Peterson winner, Danny Garcia, or little boner.
