Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
Cotto wants it, Sulaiman wants it, and so does GBP...
Three-time world champion in different divisions Miguel Cotto reportedly could earn a purse of $10 million in a September 14th showdown against undefeated WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The fight would be a production of Canelo Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions so the negotiations to reach a financial agreement shouldn’t present problems given Cotto’s close relationship with Oscar de la Hoya, President of GBP. Although Cotto has lost his last two fights, his market value hasn’t diminished dramatically due to how close the fights were against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and then Austin Trout.

Those of you in the know should know by now how FLoyd operates.. Id be surprised if he jumped in there so quick in September and it's harder to believe that he'll face Canelo that soon..
Canelo needs more seasoning anyways and a fight with Cotto is logical at this point.
Can Cotto finally beat a Mexicano or will he get busted up and knocked out again?

Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
I'd be genuinely worried for Cotto as at this point against Canelo, he'll potentially be in for a right old beating IMO. A fight that would be much more interesting for me would be Cotto vs Ortiz at 154.

Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
his knickers will be all up in a right old twist by the 8th round, Cotto's you know.

Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
canelo will be to big and strong for cotto late stoppage for canelo

Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
Would it be a PPV if it happened? I'm sure GBP wouldn't mind delaying Floyd Alvarez for a while and will want to supply all of Floyd's future opponents so they might be happy to make this and have Floyd fight Alexander or Khan or somebody like that in September. But this would be around the same date. Would Showtime do two PPVs in such a short space of time? Alvarez apparently wants the Floyd fight next.
-
Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
I think they are saving Khan for next May, possibly in the UK. If Floyd had his way he would fight Paulie or some other D level fighter. I want him to bust his ass against Saul.

Cotto doesn`t have the chin to take a right old beating. He`ll be knocked out almost as soon as Canelo lands flush.
Cotto is too small, too old, and too shop worn for this to be anything other than a gimme for Alvarez.

Canelo's on his way up. Cotto is on the downhill side of his illustrious career.
So obviously Canelo will be the heavy favorite.
But.......
"Finally beat a Mejicano"??
I hate to break it to you, but Cotto was 7-0 against Mejicanos before losing to Margarito..... and then he got that one back.
-
Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
Hate to see Cotto lose this though I think he will. Passing on the torch is one thinh but man it just ...doesn't feel right.

And the best one of them fighters was a shot to pieces Cesar Bazan. :vd:

What bullshit. Just another fight that reaffirms to me why boxing is in the toilet and the general public follows MMA instead.

I seen a couple of the last MMA PPV's. I'll stick with boxing. Ain't nothing wrong with this fight. Alvarez wants the Mayweather fight. He's not the one holding it up. Mayweather is. So the next biggest payday fight is Cotto. Is Cotto gonna get massacred? Most likely yeah. But he'll be paid very nicely. Hell I bet Cotto pulls in more than all the fighters in the next UFC PPV pull in combined. Either way if not Cotto than who should Alvarez be fighting? And give answers that make sense.

No, you're totally right. This is the best fight for Canelo, and that's what's sad to me.
In any combat sport, the best should be fighting the best. This is not the best fighting the best. Your response says it all: this is a planned massacre. A quick cash-grab at the expense of Cotto's health. It's a fresh 22 year old, the undisputed king of the division, fighting a very worn 32 year old who's coming off two losses. A guy who, according to general consensus, is washed up and on the back slide of his career. That isn't competition.
And the sad thing is this will sell, everyone will make a lot of money and Cotto, in all probability, will have a few more years taken off his life.
Who should Canelo be fighting? How about someone who has some momentum? Someone who can be legitimized as a challenge? Someone who isn't considered a shell of his former self? Canelo did the right thing by fighting Trout: it was a good, competitive fight that MADE SENSE. That had relevance.
I realize 154 is pretty weak, and those credible fighters are mostly already scheduled for fights. Why not take on a middleweight or hell, challenge Sergio Martinez to a superfight?
-
Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
Superstars should be making super fights. I'd shit on Mayweather if he chose to fight someone coming off a loss or two.
I was highly critical of the UFC for making the Jones/Sonnen fight, because it was a planned massacre/cash grab, which is very rare to see in the UFC, but seems to be common place in boxing.
This is a sport where Tyson/Holyfield 3 would be a huge draw if it was held next month.

Of course he was shot to pieces VD. Why should you give Cotto any credit whatsoever? I was merely correcting your buddy, who was talking out of his ass as usual.

How much credit you think he deserves? Bazan was a former champion with experience. So yeah I understand why Cotto fought him. But lets not pretend it was any more than what it was.

His hand is busted and he's pretty much done for the year. Like I said who should he be fighting? It's easy to say he should be fighting better fighters. But who exactly is available that is so much better than Cotto? And would actually take the fight.

You can criticize Cotto about a lot of things, 'cause I know you don't like him. But don't even go into the quality of opponents argument, 'cause you and I both know that Cotto and JCC Jr are polar opposites in that regard. How many fights did Cotto have when he fought Bazan... 15 maybe? Something like that? Try to be objective for once, VD. Or are you going to claim now that all of Miguel's opponents have had something wrong with them?

Show me where I questioned Cotto's opposition. Stop being so fucking sensitive. Saying Bazan was shot isn't a shot at Cotto. It's a fact. I even said I understood why Cotto fought him. It was a good fight for him at that stage in his career. I know Cotto is God in your household. And while his resume is filled with a lot of good names, not all of them names were in there prime when he faced them

I don't know if they will stick with it but Showtime wants to keep Canelo on there regular Chandler to keep their regular subscribers.

Re: Canelo will most likely face Cotto in September
Credit to Cotto for taking this fight. He will probably make close to a career high, but its career suicide. Cotto was an awesome fighter but if the same Cotto shows up that fough Austin Trout...its going to be a painful night for Miguel Angel.
I am so looking forward to seeing it ;D

Actually, it's an opinion. Cesar was barely 28 when he fought Cotto, with only one prior TKO loss on his record, that to J.L. Castillo back in 2001. I saw the fight. It was a very good and competitive battle between a veteran, and an up-and-coming young fighter.

Wrong again (no offense). I was a much bigger fan of Trinidad back in the day. I'm a fan of Cotto, but have criticized him numerous times.

Yes that's right. The same can be said for most any other fighter. However, his resume is filled with lots of opponents many others didn't want to face, a number of previously unbeaten fighters, and very few "soft touches".
Still.... this is an opinion. Just like you have your own opinions.
