Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
At least 51 killed, including 20 children, as tornado tears through Oklahoma, leaving miles of debris - U.S. News=
This is just plain horrifying and sad. More proof of why Oklahoma is absolutely, positively the last place in the U.S. that I'd live. Other states get tornadoes... but Oklahoma normally gets the monster, scary ones.
You never hear of any other place on Earth suffering from these killer tornadoes. Hurricanes... yeah. Earthquakes can happen anywhere. But you think of monster tornadoes and you think of Oklahoma.

Sad... Sad news, stuff like this always reminds me just how vulnerable we are stuck living on this rock.
thoughts are with the family's of the killed children :(

this happened on Obama's watch!!! That's all I'm saying here.

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
It sucks, but there's not much that could have been done to save those people. When you have an F4-F5 tornado you either better have a bomb shelter or just pray the storm misses you.
I'm glad Missy's sense of humor has not been affected by 91 people being killed by a tornado.

Or maybe we just miss your humour when you're progun when kids got murdered in Sandy Hook and you blamed Obama.

#1 I never made light of the situation.
#2 If the school was protected by someone that had a gun then that shooting wouldn't have happened. Also bringing up a man made tragedy to defend your dumb remarks about a natural disaster is fucking stupid

Makes you wonder what's worse.... living in an earthquake-prone area like anywhere on the San Andreas fault.... living in places where hurricanes always seem to hit.... or living in Tornado Alley, as I believe it's called. There's also areas like Indonesia, which have lately been ravaged by quakes and tsunamis.
But all things considered, I think living in Tornado Alley has to be worse. Killer tornadoes are much more frequent than killer earthquakes, I'd have to believe. Hurricanes give you days and even weeks of advance notice. But tornadoes pop up out of nowhere. Even in the middle of the night, when reaction time is a lot slower.
I can't imagine what it must be like living in a place like Oklahoma.

not really, if you choose to live in tornado alley what do you expect?

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
Well.... to be fair, Lyle, Tornado Alley is actually a bit smaller than might be surmised from your map. True, they can strike most anywhere... but it's a generally accepted fact that if you live in states like Oklahoma or Kansas, chances are you're going to be affected by a major tornado at least once, maybe several times in your lifetime.

Yeah tough times. Cant work out why humans get so attached to an area but we do. You'd dig a big hole with a lot more than a bolt on a timber hatch to hold the lid down if you chose to stay there and rebuild. Weather people think with the changes in climate and sea temp and flow reversals all over the planet that they are going to get worse as time goes on.

Some mad people chase Tornado's, why on earth they must be a fearsome sight in deed, hell
what chance would you have in your house, very little I should imagine.:(

Well I am shocked, hey everyone @TitoFan disagreed with me! Hey, I've never seen this before....hey you guys, did you see TitoFan disagree with me? How out of character is that?

I'm glad someone from Puerto FUCKING Rico can act like they learned something about American geography. I know all too well the sanctimonious nature of the British, ah but the Puerto Rican is up and in the chase now...good for you, don't settle for second best.
The map I posted shows where tornadoes most often happen (red), sometimes happen (orange), and can happen (yellow)....but you go right ahead and disagree with me........AGAIN....I mean, I never tire of your constant "Well Lyle, ACTUALLY (said with eyes smugly closed)....." .....don't you have anyone else to bother you little parasite?

Why are you so angry all the time, Lyle?
By the way, your map shows severity of tornadoes with regard to wind speed.
Not frequency of occurence.
I hope this clarification doesn't further anger you in any way.

Oh you mean the most severe tornadoes marked by the red area were in some kind of "alley" as it were.
I get fed up because you knit pick my comments to make bullshit arguments.....and this will no doubt be followed by YOU explaining how that's not actually the case

Er.. no, Lyle. Tornadoes do not occur in an actual "alley". It's a colloquialism used to describe where tornadoes are more frequent. Your map still shows where the most severe tornadoes occur. Severity and frequency are two different terms, which I'm sure you're aware of.
But get some help with those anger issues buddy.
Sounds like a lot of pent-up shit in there.

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
But anywho.............
It's a real tragedy what happened to those people in Oklahoma, and I'll now vacate the thread before it becomes another cesspool.

back on topic...
I really can't get this thought out of my head today.... imagine the sorrow of knowing your child is dead in a pile of rubble somewhere and not know where their body is, just think about that for a second :(

don't have kids so it doesn't bother me :) Did see the clip of the old woman finding her dog alive in the rubble.

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
Man this was a brutal beast. I was born in Tulsa and still have an Aunt up there. They had no worries but damn, it's a gutter to see what was a day before a big school turned into a pile of matchsticks and broken stones. You like to think the missing will be found just dazed and confused wandering a field but sadly most will be added to the victims list. I'll sit through another hurricane anytime before a mass tornado. There's no where to go but down, and only if you have a basement or storm cellar. Little warning. Sad terrible day but those are proud stick together people, nice land. They'll bounce back and remember the victims. Every part of this country has it's naturally occuring weather disasters and you have to live somewhere.

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
Forgive my ignorance but why no basements? Looking at the map clay probably has something to do with it along with moisture but surly there must be advances in technology and specific vapour barriers for such an application.

Basements and storm cellars are a MUST if you're going to live in those areas. I suppose expense played a large role in there being so few of them as contractors like to build quickly and cheaply......but of course I'd have to wait for an adult to agree with me before anyone makes the mistake of taking what I posted as something close to the truth.
Brockton, Alex Jones is an oddball but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
Bank vault shelters 24 people during tornado
Wow! :o
This is absolutely amazing. Not only that the death toll would've been 24 people higher... but the quick thinking and resourcefulness that saved those people. The picture itself is worth a thousand words. I still cannot imagine what it must be like to live in the states of Oklahoma, Kansas, and probably Missouri especially during the peak months of April and May, which seem to be the worst.

Re: Major, killer tornado in Oklahoma
Most of my state's tornadoes are spun off of hurricanes which you get long notices for....couldn't imagine what it would be like when those storms just pop up seemingly out of nowhere and are right on top of you immediately.
But hell I couldn't imagine living in California what with the mudslides, fires, and earthquakes

Yeah... that sounds like a bitch. Mudslides and fires you can run from, I guess.
Earthquakes you can't... you're just f*cked.
Still... I can't decide which is worse. Living in California close to the San Andreas fault... or living in Oklahoma or Kansas. At least in California there's tons of things to do. So if you happen to get hit by an earthquake, at least you've been having some fun beforehand. Strange logic I know...;D . But if I'm gonna get f*cked anyway, might as well be in a place that's fun to live.

Oklahoma can offer a few things....solitude......college football from time to time......a decent NBA team....and cows....ooooh NOODLIN'! They do that in Oklahoma!!!! Noodling being the "sport" where people hand catch huge catfish.....seems like the perfect beer drinking spectator sport IMO
