WTF is wrong with Mexican People? or Boxing Fans?
How is Alvarez more of an attraction than Marquez? Marquez put the peoples champ to sleep? How does he not have more of a Mexican following than Alvarez?
Who the fxck is Alvarez, compared to a real legend, Marquez?
Marquez only got recognition late in his career and was overshadowed by Barrera & Morales. Alvarez has been a Golden Boy marketing machine since before his first title fight. They have sold him well.

I've wondered the same thing, and have gotten to the same conclusion.
Do you guys live in Mexico, have lots of Mexican friends that like boxing, or are you assuming?

The part about Marquez being overshadowed by Barrera and Morales early in his career has been well publicized over the years. Canelo being hyped since the beginning, even without having faced credible opposition until recently, has also been a subject of much criticism in boxing circles.

Marquez was being featured consitently on American airwaves 2 yrs into his career, and main eventing cards in Vegas by his 4th, and co maining Wide World of Sports with a young Mayweather late in his 5th. Just as Canelo did on a Mayweather undercard fresh out of Mexico...for practically the first time. That right there shows you the power of multi millionaire promotion and literally being marketed and groomed like a show pup. Marquez scraped and clawed to get his recongnition but the respect for his talent and skill was there all along. Canelo almost had visibility brought to him, plotted for him, on a platter. Besides, hes a freckle faced ginger from Mexico nicknamed Cinnamon ffs ;D
Marquez is an ATG but mostly at the lower weights and he is near the end of his career. Alvarez is the future.
Canelos last fight was against trout who is probably the next best 154 pounder. Mayweather just fought a blown up light weight in Guerrero Also in Marquez while being the "P4P king". Canelo has done this but he's still just a kid at 22 years old making his way up. He didn't cherry pick in his prime or reign as "best boxer ever". I believe that's a huge difference plus the 22 year old just agreed to come in at a lesser weight for the P4P king. Say what you want but Canelo is about to fight the best boxer on the planet and just fought the next best fighter in his division all that fighting blown up fighters can go out the window.Quote:

Let's wait another 10-15 years before we can say Marquez > Alvarez. Since the kid is young and his only noteworthy win is against Trout, which I really thought Trout won by a single round.
Now after they both retire then we can do a fair assessment of who's resume is better.
Up to this point...Canelo has had one noteworthy win...a travesty of a decision over Trout (regardless of whether you though Alvarez won or lost...the scoring in that fight was disgraceful and proved that the only chance Trout had to win was with a KO). Marquez is a hall of famer...one of the great technicians of all time. Maybe Canelo will go on to live up to the considerable hype surrounding him...but he will have to go on to have a hell of a career to be compared to Marquez.
