Do you believe that people can change?

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
If the friends and surroundings change usually the people do to suit.
Put em under the old pressures and Im not so certain they'd hold up.
Speaking for myself, Im friends with and accept many sexual and gender diverse people now, where as when a youngster in mid teens I would of been one of the stupid uneducated pricks taking the piss out of them (which as the last straw sometimes send many to the grave). I would no sooner do that than take the piss out of a disabled person,Id rather shoot myself then live with it.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
Not deep down, in terms of vices such as anger or womanising people find ways of dealing with them. But they all come out in the end, or when you get drunk :p

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
in looks yes, in personality traits no.
Andre you didn't change... things just became less funny and more offensive over time.

I dont know,is it maturity? Others have matured along with me (mates) but their attitudes havent they are the same. When you realize what a word or two can do to someone, (it can take them either way) it makes you rethink your own position.
Some people may change, or is that learning? Can you learn compassion?

I do not believe killers should ever be set free or be alive TBH... so killers lurking.
EDIT: unless they killed out of defence of family or themselves being killed the comment above was really ment for people who killed out of perversion, crime, to prevent being caught or evil reasons

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
Strictly in my opinion; certain personality traits are either inherent or a product of nurture and environment quite early on in life, you only learn to manage them differently and create different circumstances to live by. I think we can all expand our awareness or increase our capacity for empathy to an extent mind you, but to truly reform who you are, hell no and who would want to.
The best examples you hear of people who "change", are usually just bearing a cross to help themselves via the same mechanism that made it necessary to change. Everyone is a product of their own experience, and people are wired to feel genuine compassion towards those they relate to. It's a shitty aspect of the human condition imo.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
Why do you want to change? Whats wrong with you? :D
IMO anybody can do anything they want. Its all in the mindset. Just recognizing you want change means you're not a blind fool. You are aware of something wrong. However, there are moronic human beings who can't even recognize something is wrong or they flat out deny it/ even some embrace it like its the norm. I guess only people with enough brain capacity can change.
Also IMO, you can't just be one thing at all times. You gotta play your cards right. I always hated the phrase "be yourself". I think thats one of the most irresponsible advice anybody can give to anybody, especially to a youngster. There have been many occasion when if I was to be myself, I would get fired, go to jail, get shot, etc. Just play your cards right and always aware of the situation.
Now lets get back to the real topic here, what is wrong with you? What do you want to change about you? :D

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
How you react to things is a lot different than who you are though, and something you absolutely can control and change.

You can control and change both your reaction and who you are. Most of the time, how you react depends on who you are. I kinda get what your trying to say though.

You might change who you are to others by reacting differently, which in turn is self fulfilling. What actually causes you to react either way was always there, it's a matter of how you process things. I'm not big into these arguments, but this sort of comes down to whether you believe in free will and that jazz. People are not rational creatures, we are usually compelled to make the decisions we do, one way or another.

First of don't drink ;D
I'm no expert but sounds like you going through typical youngblood type of phase. We all been through the same things. I control my temper by thinking about consequences. I eradicated that whole wearing your heart on your sleeve by learning to follow my brain instead of my emotion. I'm not sure how I've done that but there are times when I do slip up. About Jesus, you don't need to find him man. Sound like you know what right and wrongs are thats all there is to it.
I think you just tough on yourself, relax man quit taking things too serious. Go talk to Andre, he better at giving advice than I am.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
Ha dont pass the buck to me Rainman you doing fine :).
Why do you want to find Jesus? Is that the misses to be's calling?
You do know Jesus or Yeshua as he was known pointed to God, John also pointed above and at the high road. The churches driven by men all point at themselves and at the ones who pointed out God and the higher road. Middle men are cashing in.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
Of course people can change, people are constantly evolving. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Life is ups and downs and some comes from beyond and some comes from within. I think you do have the ability to control things, but it isn't easy and I think people tend to eventually let themselves go physically and emotionally. I think the social and economic models that we have in place today are cruel and are designed to scar you. It isn't easy to change, but you have to in order to survive.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
I was packing to go away tomorrow and noticed "GEEK" written on something, it reminded me of this thread.... I guess not all slates become more offensive over time and some become more complimentary.
-
Yes some people can change. For others it is too frightening and they cling to old patterns of thought for comfort. Nothing is truly static though and if you continue to refuse to change life will move on and pass you by.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
I have a suspicion if you have somethng you have an issue with that maybe you shouldnt have issue with, then that exact thing keeps rising up to challenge your stupid fixed point of view. Eventually you move. Change is good it means you evolve mentally and spiritually. I think many believe that to be fixed is to be strong, where as that just gets worn down.

Re: Do you believe that people can change?
Yes I believe people can change, we all make mistakes and nobody is free from doing things wrong.
I believe in forgiveness for people as I would want people to forgive me should I ever do something seriously wrong one day.
