Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Several years ago when Carl Froch called out Joe Calzaghe, trying to drum up interest in a potential fight between these two British fighters. Froch's calling out of Calzaghe came off the heels of his TKO victory over Jermain Taylor on 4-25-2009. Calzaghe for his part had dismissed Froch saying, "Enough is enough with Carl Froch calling me out,” Calzaghe told the South Wales Argus. “I can tell you categorically that I will not fight the guy even if I did come out of retirement, which I am not going to do..."I am sick to death of him drumming up free publicity for himself by using my name,” Calzaghe said. “No one who watched the fight can believe he’s in my class. He’s my stalker."..."For the first eight rounds against Taylor he was like a goalkeeper with no defense. He was being outclassed and outfought by a middleweight who’s seen better days."
HOWEVER...Here's the truth about Calzaghe:
You know who is overrated? Joe Calzaghe is overrated. Sure he beat Roy Jones, and Bernard Hopkins, but both those guys are past their respective primes, meaning he beat faded legends. If he'd have fought them in their primes, he'd have gone 0-2, or 1-1 at best.
Calzaghe has built his record having been sheltered in England, and fighting fringe contenders, never-will-be's, over-hyped stars, and as I mentioned already, faded legends. If that's not the definition of overrated, I don't know what is. he is the msot overated boxer of all time, he stayed in england and cardiff dodging boxers then came over and beat a 41 year old roy jones junior and a bernard hopkins who was passed his best, he did beat kessler and that was a good achievement and beat an overated jeff lacy, but other than that he was well overated, he ducked pavlik and froch instead he fought peter manfredo!!!

re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Indeed Calzaghe is very over rated.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
also he did NOT beat Bernard. bullshit decision by ANYONE's standards.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
I would say he's underrated he's doesn't get the credit he deserves. Ok he beat a old Roy jones but all his other wins eubank,Reid, lacy, bika and Kessler were solid opponents and do you really honestly think pavlik or froch would of beat him ?

re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
He is underrated and especially by Americans. Also, people ignore the fact that almost EVERY US expert or forum poster was picking Lacy to destroy Calzaghe. Calzaghe was 'old', 'protected', 'faded' etc, and he turned on one of the most impeccable performances ever seen. After the event suddenly Lacy was overrated and history was rewritten. Perhaps the worst thing was Lacy injuring himself in his next fight thus ending his own career. He was never able to knock people out again and so instead of admitting that the shoulder was fucked, people instead knocked Calzaghe and cheapened the great win. Lacy was apparently always shit.
Calzaghe beat Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Lacy, Kessler, and a still top level Hopkins by moving up. There is filler on the resume, but the same can be said of all boxers including the likes of Mayweather and Hopkins who often get a free pass.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Also, I don't even think the Hopkins fight was particularly close. Calzaghe was simply too busy and got stronger as the fight wore on.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
lacy is a 1-dimensional piece of shit. anyone picking him was an idiot.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
He was a great fighter who beat who he could have. Perhaps he could have done more for his overall profile by either ditching Frank Warren or travelling a little, but aside from Roy Jones there wasn't really anyone a level above the guys who were willing to come and fight him. I don't think he beat Hopkins myself, but that was a pretty negative fight and very hard to score regardless of what you like. Well worth noting that Calzaghe was further over the hill than Hops was at that point as well, in hindsight at least.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
i like that p4p thats a fair and reasonable stance to take. I thought he was impressive with his throwing punches in bunches.
BUT why did he duck Froch and Pavlik? He was a slapping arm puncher - like Mayorga, another overrated yet impressive boxer.

It was practically everyone over the Atlantic and Lacy's career was over because of the shoulder. He had no tools to continue his career with. It was all the writers and most people on forums saying that Lacy would crush Calzaghe. I think they were being a bit idiotic too, but people get it wrong sometimes. In that instance almost everyone did it at the same time.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
i agree they were all idiots and I could never see anything good about jeff lacy---just like lamon brewster---a lucky left hook and all of america is sucking his cock.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
The most overrated fighter of all time is Rocky Marciano. By a country mile.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
An old Calzaghe beat an old Jones but Jones wasnt finished. He did have some wins after this. He beat Trinidad and Sheika. Calzaghe was 36:rolleyes: Jones would have always struggled with that workrate and fearless style.
He beat Hopkins who went on to beat Pavlik, Pascal and Cloud. His dominance over Hopkins was proven by Hopkins crawling round on the floor looking for respite.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
How much money did he make over his career?
-
How is Calzaghe overrated? I mean how highly is he rated? Most people rate him as the greatest 168 of all time but that division isn't stacked historically. Roy Jones is probably the best of all time at that division but didn't stick around long enough there. I think even the most staunch Calzaghe supporters would acknowledge that. I don't think anyone puts him at top 10 of all time or anything. Hes a great fighter, would you care to propose a fighter who had a better body of work at 168?

prime Chris Eubank, prime RJJ, Sven Ottke, Mike McCallum, Steve Collins, James Toney, all blow him out of the water, hell even Nigel Benn would smoke him.

Why would you say that? What's the point of your ranting here?
I've never met Jeff Lacy, and I doubt you have, so why would you say the man is 'piece of shit'?
He was a world class athlete, who's career probably didn't hit the heights he wanted it to. Nevertheless, he was committed and brave enough to step into the ring, alone and in front of millions. I always respect fighters' courage because I know what it takes.
I wonder whether you'd call him a piece of shit to his face, instead of on an Internet forum?

I don't think he overrated or underrated, I think he a highly regarded, retired boxer who beat some of the best. Anyone who thinks he's overrated should look at his boxing record.
Lacy was overrated but Hopkins--I don't really care for the guy-- is still outsmarting younger fighters and he was not able to do that against Calzaghe.
If Calzaghe had a big punch to go with his other skills he would be a legend.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Joe Calzaghe is underrated.
If he were Lionel Jones from Philadelphia USA and had exactly the same record, the people who bash and discredit him would acknowledge he's an ATG boxer.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Man brock you going tell me you think Calzaghe overrated and then tell me how great the rock is when he is clearly the most overrated man in history hw boxing. Anyhow Calzaghe far from overrated, he beat Hopkins, Kessler, Eubank, Jones and Bika which is a good list and was champ for 10 years. People say Jones and Hopkins were old but not like Calzaghe was prime at 36 years of age. As for Pavlik and Froch they called out Calzaghe when he was retired and could not even beat his left overs.
-
re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Rocky Marciano is the most overrated fighter of all time. Joe did well but he could have unified the title against Ottke instead of staying in the comfort zone of Warren's apron.

I was a big hater of JC at one stage but he is a fantastic boxer.
On this occasion I cant agree with everything Ross has said above as a prime RJ is a different league to any boxer on earth.
JC vs hopkins was close and only got the decision due to the white boy comment which made them both alot more money.
I think if your white and have alittle bit of italian in you as a boxer the public will always tend to blow things up a bit.
In JC case he fought and beat 46 opponents of various different styles just like mayweather is doing.
JC had alot of phantom injuries that seem to appear and disappear in demand but you name me a fighter that hasnt chose a to fight a boxer with less risk but more money.
JC never seems to get mentioned in the pound 4 pound stakes but he is right up there and i would have loved to have seen how he would have faired against a prime andre ward.
JC deserves the respect of all boxing fans and his workrate would give floyd mayweather or any other hall of famer serious problems in a same weight situation.
Carl froch is another fave of mine but theres a way to beat him and i dont know whether he would beat JC

So sorta like a prime Charles, Moore, Louis, Walcot etc etc. Tell you what, you get that time machine on the go and we can put this theory to the test.
Btw the only man that might have beaten Cal at 168 is Jones. Perhaps Langford. And lmfao at Sven. And you call Joe C overrated.......

Brock has gone a little over the top with Ottke and Collins or McCallum was too old at that weight.

He's only overrated by the Brits. Most Americans dont even consider Calzaghe as anything great and they certainly dont rate him that high all-time..
Me personally, Im a huge fan of Calzaghe and i dont overrate him nor do I underrate him. I put him exactly where he belongs which is high up there with Eubank and Benn.. Maybe even have surpassed them.

I like Brock. He's kinda half serious and half looking for a reaction. Like his workouts on the playground. ;) I have to back track a bit because I think Watson would have been a problem for Jones or Cal and the same goes for a prime Eubanks.
My conclusion remains though.

Really? I went back and checked, and.... maybe it's just me. But the 16 pages are hardly filled exclusively with MY posts. Hardly what I'd call "trolling". Don't you think? Matter of fact, many of the initial responses agreed with my premise at the time. I do remember, though, seeing you begin a personal war with Althugz over the issue.
And whereas others get a free pass by calling Calzaghe "overrated", you're more offended by MY personal notion that Froch is more likeable as a fighter than Calzaghe. Weird, isn't it? Because not being as likeable as another fighter is soooo much worse than being called "overrated". It's as if you react to the same comments differently, depending on who they are coming from. But please continue being inexplicably drawn to MY comments. I've come to expect it.
As you said.... no big deal.

He has no facts he just hates fighters and kinda goes with it i think. Anyhow Jc is up there he beat good comp was the smw and lhw champ and was champ for 10 years with 20 odd title defenses. As for the Pavlik and Forch wanting to fight him they could not even beat guys he dealt with on the decline.

re: Joe Calzaghe is the 2nd most overrated fighter of all time. Rocky Marciano is no.1
Calzaghe and Marciano share unbeaten records, both were overrated, Marciano, to his credit, fought anyone who was out there, it was just that most of them were 40 years old or more. Calzaghe fought mostly bums, and then old men past their prime. God knows (hopefully) how he got the decision over Hopkins.
If you want to post about unbeaten British fighters then why not Terry Marsh? Or are you a Warren man.
