Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
Rocky Marciano cannot be an alltime great unless he had fought and beaten Floyd Patterson, Nino Valdez, and Sonny Liston. If he had fought 3 more times, won all 3, and then retired he would have been 52-0, and then we can consider him an alltime great.
32 is no age to retire, he fought Archie Moore 23 days after his 32nd birthday. He should have taken the winter off, started training in January 1956 and fought Floyd Patterson in March 1956, Nino Valdes quickly afterwards, let's say in July 1956 and then trained for a mega-bout a Gran Finale of his career, with Eddie Machen, Brian London, Sonny Liston or even Zora Folley in October or November 1956.
This was painful.

Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
I believe he was looking to make Johansson his comeback fight. He could have taken Ingmar and Floyd Patterson even if he was a step or two slower.
Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
Stop pretending that you do not rate Rocky as an ATG because we know you do. You are just trying to stop criticism that you are selectively picking on certain fighters like Joe Calzaghe, when your own hero was lucky to retire undefeated. I see it, we all see it so lets stop this nonsense, you know he was not able to beat Patterson because he was too old, management issues and back problems.

There are 6 words too many in your thread title Brock.

Good point mate. The title should read "3 More Times" striking out the 6 words "Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting".

I quite agree. Even a glancing shot from "old" 32 year Rocky would KO Patterson into oblivion.
As for Johanssen, that would ve been a great fight, I think Rocky would crumple him with a body shot in about the 5th.
Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
32 year old champ Rocky Marciano announced retirement in 1956.
Sonny Liston turned pro in '53,
was 14 wins and 1 loss(avenged) by '56,
jail and boxing ban mid-'56 to '57,
back to boxing in 1958.
What could have been?
I don't think the Rock would have been prime anymore in 1958 at 34 years old.
In 1956 the Rock had substantial lower back pain which was a major cause for his retirement (in addition to not having any real challengers anymore and no big money fight on the horizon.)
Some points to consider:
The Rock absolutely had the power in his right hand to put out even Sonny Liston if he hit him right on the chin. The Rock could take a helluva shot. The Rock did not get frustrated and kept working at cutting down his more skilled opponents late in the fight. Competitive heart and mentally TOUGH!
Marciano would NOT have been scared of Liston, and intimidation/fear were a big part of Liston's arsenal. There is the Rock's bad back by 1956 though, this for a crouching fighter.
It would've been a great fight.
No way in hell that a young 21 year old Patterson with no chin could have ever beaten a guy like Marciano. Patterson's much better than he's given credit for nowadays, and he's got an impressive highlight reel worth watching for any boxing fan, but there's no way he would have ever beaten Marciano.
.
Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
Brock you can't be feeling well,!!!!!! besmirching Rocky is it something you have
eaten or drunk, any how I do hope you get better soon Bud.;D
Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
Rocky like Joe Calzaghe retired at the right time. He was too old for Floyd and Johannson. Also forget about Liston who would have brutalised him.
Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
If he beat the shit out of Patterson and Liston, I would have had him #1 of all time for sure.
To whip a fast prime guy like Patterson, and a much bigger, heavier Liston, that would have really been special.

not too old for lil' floyd. and if he was olding around the edges, his old punch would still have crystallized lil' floyd's chandelier chin.
jahanssen wasnt in the spotlight in 56 that I know of anyway. hadnt fought outside of stockholm or gothenborg sweden in his life until he went to nyc in 59. that fight couldnt have been made in 56 or even 57 bcuz the guy was virtually unknown outside of sweden.
as for sonny boy, he was a jailbird at the time I believe, so that fight couldnt have been made either.
I think Nino Valdes wouldve been a clear challenge for Rocky and it wouldve been a great fight, with Rocky winning by late stoppage.
I believe Rocky told the truth when he said he felt like he still had "2 or 3 more good fights" left in him. That would take him into early 1957. Like I said he would have to fight those "2 or 3 fights" rather quickly, no way could he fight once every 7 months. He would have had to have fought in early '56, then late '56 right after without getting too out of shape, and his Gran Finale had to be no later than Spring or early Summer '57.
I truly believe in June of 1957 nobody still could have licked Rocky. But if he tried pushing into 1958 I will agree with his crouching style he would have been burnt out.
Re: Rocky Marciano sucks for not fighting 3 more times
I definitely feel that Rocky's retirement was due to money problems, his manger's split made these matches seem like a pipe dream. It's amazing how Big Al Weill got away with it but that was then.

Did joe louis' last two big fights make him an all time great? His loss to Charles and loss to Marciano?
had he retired before those last two big losses to charles, marciano, you wouldnt consider him an all time great? of course louis is an all time great. marciano didnt have anything left to prove.
jim jeffries retired for the first time at 29 years old. his last loss against jack johnson nearly 6 years later didnt make him an all time great, his 21 fights, (yes only 22 fights in his career) made him an all time great, and if you don't think jeffries is an all time great, there is something wrong. Same with Marciano.
