Cotto looked great against Rodriguez. Martinez looked crap against Murray. Are they on opposite trajectories? Is Martinez's body too broken down to compete at the top level? Was Cotto's performance more a reflection on his opponent rather than his level of competitiveness?
assuming that Martinez's knee heals up properly and he can fight at 100% he'd probably be too big, too strong for Cotto, I don't think that he'd be able to handle the weight at 160
Cotto is already small for 147.. This fight is silly. Plus if Cotto is changing weight classes he's probably dropping down. Martinez should focus on his weight class with guys like GGG and Kid Chocolate around he is in no position to be acting like he has no more challenges in his weight. Especially after his last fight..
Either way Martinez by UD. In a fight that won't really matter.
I disagree, IMO 147 is Cotto's natural weight, cause although 5'7 he's stocky and has a big enough frame to naturally carry the weight, but he's definately too small for 154 even moreso 160Quote:

there are good fights for him, just all depends how much he can come back from the surgery at his age
but Cotto has Alvarez at 154 and plenty of options at 147, shouldn't make the jump to 160
I like cotto.
But against floyd or trout the same thing happens again.
He should retire after a canelo or martinez fight as cotto takes alot of damage in his fights

True, but a lot of people here said Cotto was all done and Roach was a bad move. Many said Cotto would lose and be all done after this fight. I have not really been a big Cotto fan but I was very interested to see how he would fare in his return with Roach. Who knows how he will do as he gets back to high profile fights but I enjoyed the hell out of this fight. Probably because it was after watching one of the worst fights I have ever seen with the hugster Wlad, plus the Crawford fight wasn't that good eitherQuote:

Cotto needs a few more Rodriguez type opponents before stepping up for 1 last payday. Cotto is still a huge attraction and is good for boxing. Martinez will train his ass off and eventually get the late round ko in a fight that should not happen.
I'm not sure about some of the reasoning in this thread but anyway I think its a good fight and I'd wager they would do it at a catch. I think Cotto has seen his best days but so has Martinez. A 3 inch height advantage is nothing. In addition Martinez is not some massive middle. Cotto has simply out grown 147. I only see him attempting it for one of the two money pits but then he might have to change trainers again. Funny cause Floyd has not and yet he's expected to fight Martinez or TripleG but that is another thread. Cotto pulled out all stops to win the fight with Delvin starting with the opponent and followed by yet another trainer change. If Cotto did not win that fight I honestly think that was it for him. Cotto would probably take the fight but I dont see Martinez doing it coming off another injury. I think we are far more likely to see Cotto/Alvarez.Quote:

Reach advantage is overplayed. Cotto's style for the most part is negating it. Marciano had about the same reach as Hatton. Saddler had a longer reach. Paul Williams had the wing span of a teradactyl.
I cant say until I see martinez in a tuneup. He's had two big surgeries on his knee and he's a fighter who relied heavily on his mobility so theres just no way to know his condition right now.
Im pretty sure he wont be the same fighter and if im right, i might pick cotto.
Just a bridge too far for Cotto. I like the dude and glad he caved in Rodriquez as pretty much everyone expected, but thats going from Nerf ball to the majors with Martinez..yes even a long in the tooth Martinez. That fight needs serious perspective. Cottos jab would be nulified of left extended from jump and he would telegraph as he sets up and tries to rip Martinez who would be just fast and mobile enough to leave him in a lurge and hit him with blind spot punches the likes of which Miguel has not felt, and can not afford. I respect both of these guys tons but honestly see Martinez putting a bad beating on Cotto. Cotto is commited physically..heavy on the front... when he initiates and don't think he'll be fresh and quick enough to adjust when Sergios shoots counters and breaks it up.
I might think a bridge perhaps to far for Martinez. He still says he can make 155 for Floyd. Leave the tin on the night stand.
No, Cotto is too small for MW, though it might be catching Martinez at the right time. Cotto needs to fight Trout, KO Alvarez and maybe also fight Mayweather again.

why not? think back to when there were fewer weight classes. fighters were often different weights for fights.
I don't think it's the weight. Cotto has beaten pretty much a blue print of the same opponent at 154. Mayorga being what he was, awkward strong, Rodriquez and a shop worn Margarito are somewhat similar. Foreman was the deepest in mobility and boxing, Martinez may have a knee brace also but he's oceans above in firepower and talent. Not saying its a terrible match at all, just think Martinez gets really sold short as of late.

I would pay to see that fight. But here's how style makes fights in my opinion.
