Biggest backfiring trashtalking or ring entrances
It's ego-bashing enough when you get KTFO'ed or otherwise dismantled in the ring. But when that comes after you've trash-talked your way into the trash-talking HOF.... or after an outlandish, prolonged, theatrical entrance.... it's got to feel much worse. I wanted to make a poll, but I was sure I'd leave out some very notable instances. So I'll just mention some that come to mind.
Mayorga-Trinidad
Mayorga-DLH
Man, I actually loved this character. He never had a dull fight. But he ran his mouth waaay too much, and then got his ass handed to him in those two fights. Perfect example of having your mouth "write a check your ass can't cash." Still... he was colorful and always exciting to watch.
Tyson-Lewis
Tyson really went overboard with Lewis, getting all sexual and stuff :-X .
Unfortunately for Mike.... Lewis had the last word in "lights out" fashion.
Rahman-Lewis II
Rahman called Lewis, his sister gay... his whole family gay. Then he grabbed Lewis and threw him on top of a table on a TV show with Roy Firestone. I remember at first I didn't care who won the rematch. But after that, I was definitely rooting for Lewis to get some payback. Boy, did he ever. I think Rahman is STILL stretched out on the canvas after that Lewis right hand.
Ali-Frazier I
Ali called Frazier every name in the book, most notable "gorilla". He ridiculed Frazier so much, the hatred went on through Frazier's entire life. But in Ali-Frazier I, Smokin' Joe got the last laugh.
Judah-Tszyu
I'm not sure how much, if any, trash-talking Zab did before this fight. But just his demeanor alone made me want for him to lose bad. And we all know what happened after that. The ol' chicken dance, followed by Zab inexplicably taking it out on Jay Nady.
Naseem-MAB
A personal favorite. All the magic carpet rides, disco dancing, smoke screens, silhouette dancing and prancing. None of that shit did any good at fight time. What a thoroughly enjoyable, humiliating beatdown. Turned out to be career-ending, also.
And last but definitely not least...........
Haye-Wlad
If belts were given out for trash-talking, Haye would be undefeated, undisputed. The guy talked so much shit... he basically hyped the fight all by himself. Had he not chosen boxing, a career as a used-car salesman would've been right down his alley. Unfortunately, then the "fight" happened. And I use the term "fight" loosely. Damned big toe! ;)
I'm sure there's more, like the video of that guy who came into the ring doing a dance from his locker room all the way into the ring..... and then got KTFO'ed in the 1st round. The ring walk back must've seemed like 5 miles worth.
So what other examples are out there?

Spinks vs. Judah II
Cory danced into the ring then was doing a different kind if dance once Zab got him hurt, toyed with him then finished him.
Haugen vs. Chavez Sr.
Greg took shots at the whole country of Mexico and Julio's inflated record then he got tortured and massacred in there. Probably knew all along he was in for it so he said fuck it n talked some serious trash.
Stevens vs. GGG
Curtis went so far as to have a mock funeral for GGG and boasted he'd knock him out. Then we all saw the face he made once he got dropped.
Pavlik vs. the last guy he fought
I remember this last guy talking a lot of shit and entering the ring to "ghostbusters". He left the ring a bloody pulp. Tough bastard tho wouldn't quit.

I don't know if haye v wlad is one of the biggest backfires of trash talk... it was a pretty tame fight and haye was never really close to being knocked out.. Wladimir easily owned the fight though but to be the most humilitating backfire would require a major ko I think...
ALthoguh wladimir completely won the comedy insult battle with his silent video after the fight.. :S

I see your point, particularly when you consider the other fights ended in knockouts (well... except Ali-Frazier and MAB-Naseem). But when you look at the extent of the Haye pre-fight talk versus his performance that night..... the gap between the two is immense.

With some guys, it's just an expected act like Mayorga and Camacho Sr, done for entertainment value to build the gate. I always really enjoyed their stuff, it was comedy.
The mean-spirited, beyond arrogant ones though, they really seemed to believe their own bull$#!t...
In MMA. I think Tim Sylvia's pre-fight comments before getting clocked by an ancient Ray Mercer in 10 seconds was hilarious!
I'm actually a fan of Big Tim Sylvia.
Tim called out ol' Ray for a Boxing match.
A couple days before the scheduled fight, it's switched to an MMA match.
The old man still took the fight.

haha forgot about that one. I remember watching him dance thinking like dam this dude has no rythm.. That also explains his poor footwork in the ring..

Fernando's famous "This Mexican.... won't run", in reference to De La Hoya's running like a bitch for the last 3-4 rounds of his fight with Trinidad. No..... Vargas didn't run. Instead he got run over by a freight train and was never the same again. ;D ;D
The walk to the ring knocking down the cardboard blocks, with fire coming out of the ground....... the way he got in Trindad's face while getting their instructions in the middle of the ring, almost spitting his water into Trindad's face. You know..... all the "badass" things Fernando was famous for. And for what. To end up getting knocked on his ass in the very first round, and then out cold on his face in the last round.

I thought Vargas entrance was lame as fuck. Didn't care for it at all. I got no problem admitting it. I'm not gonna pretend it was cool or avoid any mention of it like you and the Filipino do regarding Trinidad's imaginary pony dance

Why would anybody knock on vargas for getting knocked out? He was a young pup who was down enough to face a bonafide champ in tito.
He walked out as a mayan warrior and went out on his shield. That's all that matters.

Mab/Hamed. Yappy did a lot of talking prior to the fight. Took about 30 minutes to come to the ring.

I just dont see Tito-Vargas as a good example for this thread cuz I dont really consider that backfiring on Vargas..
It was a grueling back and forth battle that had both fighters hurt. Vargas hung in there deep into the fight until he couldnt go no more.. He even knocked tito down and had him so hurt that he resorted to low blows to save himself..
IF anything, Vargas deserves nothing but praise for that fight.. Can you imagine Canelo facing GGG?
Vargas did well for himself..
