I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
Is currently and historically the longest reigning Welterweight Champion!
Oh and that it was Sonny Liston who received the first million $ purse!!

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
I thought Dempsey got that but without googlng it, it might have been the event that first made a million... regardless a million in them times is an amazing amount of dosh :o

Fights with over 100k of spectators as well.
Crazy money in todays terms, infact i wonder if it actually beats what Floyd earns when you weigh it up ;)

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
yea and even with wins over Whitaker, Carr, Campas, Camacho, Pineda, Moore, Pendleton, and even DLH people think that guys like Pacquiao would walk right through him :-X

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
Trinidad was never undisputed.
Back when there was only one recognised world champion they fought everyone. Now a champion gets to avoid the other best in the weight because of politics. So unless a fighter goes out of his way to take that disputing factor out by beating everyone its always disputable they would have won or lost against them. Much like Wlad never fighting Vitali.

Good point.
With that sort of money being around in boxing back in those days... The mob must have been eating very well indeed.

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
Never realized that. Tito had two yr light touch lull there but moving up successful on own terms was quality. Still tempted to put Naploes for longevity with asterisk next to a one in a billion chance loss.

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
Tunney got the first million dollers against Dempsey.
Razer Ruddock became the first millionaire never fighting for a world title.

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
I always wanted to see Felix fight IKe Quartey they both held belts and where unbeaten , boxing is a funny old game , when Trinidad fought Oba Carr he koed him , CArr went the distance with Quartey.
However Ike hurt Oscar much more when he fought him , than Felix did.

Master, that is what I thought but Tunney actually made up the last $10,000 do he could call it a million dollar purse but Liston v Patterson was the first official

Pretty sure that Dempsey/Carpentier was the first million dollar gate actually close to 2 million. Tunney/Dempsey broke the gate record netting over two. I'm also quite sure that it was Liston who made the first million dollar purse against Patterson in the second fight.

I was just gonna add that. Excellent.
Tunney wanted a check with 1 million written on it, but his purse was set to be $990 445, so Tunney gave Tex Rickard the difference, and Rickard made out the million dollar check. The Tunney family has a photostat of it.

@ElTerribleMorales I think most didn't say Pacquiao would walk through him, just that he'd outbox him. The way Pacquiao gets in and out and boxes in cirlces against the tougher guys is why people like me think this. Trinidad's record is overhyped. He beat an old Whittaker well, but not a prime one and his win over Oscar is highly questionable. The rest are decent, but not great fighters. He had very good power but he could be outboxed. I'm not saying he was a bad fighter because he was a great fighter and a great champion, but I think people made him out to be better than he actually was.

I always wanted this fight too. Trinidad vs. Mosley & Trinidad vs. Quartey would have been great fights had they happened.

That is SHOCKING, I checked boxrec and that is right but I just find it astounding as Ruddock was a solid fighter.

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
I am surprised that it took so many years after Tunney/Dempsey for a fighter to get million doller purse.

Tyson twice for a start!
He earned $13 for the two fights against Tyson;)
What a money making machine Tyson was. What would that figure be today?

Re: I was shocked to learn that Felix Trinidad...
Based on an inflation calculator, Ruddock would have earned over $22 million this year for his 2 fights against Mike Tyson!
That is incredible!

He still carried on for a few more years getting splattered by Lennox and having an epic battle with Morrison.
