A bus driver in Vancouver who has dressed as Santa for the last 20 years has been told to wear his uniform. No doubt because it might offend someone who recently came to this country to escape the trials and tribulations of their own. The sad truth here is that Santa has squat to do with religion.

If I tell someone Merry Christmas and they don't happen to celebrate Christmas they should know that I am just wishing them the joy, peace, love, and harmony that Christmas is supposed to represent.
If somebody wished me Happy Hanukah I'd know they'd be wishing me the best, ditto for Kwanza or whatever else is celebrated. Even if they say "Happy Holidays" or something...I just accept it as a person wishing me well and what is wrong with that? As a reasonable, rational adult what is wrong with it?

I make it a point to say merry Christmas, and it has next to nil reflection of religion but simply the date, time and memories. If someone tells me happy Hanukkah or whatever, I say right on! What it means to me is the way I'll live the day and celebrate.
Be good to dress up in a devil outfit and go around giving out presents. I wonder if the Christmastains would kick up or get cross + :)?
Could go one step further and give out cheap Chinese shit that breaks in under a week,books with last pages ripped out, dvds with a scratch through the last scene so it freezes, You know, all the fun things. >:D The annoying Devil.

It does seem to have gone too far. Of course people need to consider others on occasion, but what does Santa matter? You move to a country, then respect that they have Santa. I don't like Santa, but then I don't won't go and visit him. It's not my right to tell everyone else that they cannot have a Santa. It is my right to say that I think Santa is a creepy, old bastard, but it isn't my right to ban him.
Nativity plays are also getting a harder time, but I have no issues with that. However, the reasons for them having a harder time are nothing to do with atheists like me. It is simply about not wanting to upset the token Muslim kids. As an older person who has wised up to the realities of religion and how it is all child abuse, I would never allow my child to take part or be indoctrinated in any Bible nonsense. I earned my first acting stripes as a Shepard, but the photographic evidence clearly shows that I was disenchanted with the entire process. As a child of atheistic upbringings, I really should not have been encouraged to take part in as warped a story as the birth of Christ.
Religion has no part to play in a classroom, but Santa isn't about religion. It's just about giving kids something fun. Religion is serious horrible shit, but Santa is just a laugh. Santa is like Peter Pan, or Thomas the Tank engine. It's only bad when adults start believing in fairy stories.

When I took the bus to highschool there was a driver who looked the part. Real beard, But he wore his uniform, just added the Santa hat & gave lollipops to kids.
His honest action to try to make people happy caused adverse reaction when a black driver was chided for wearing dashiki during Kwanza. (whites complained about him to the County bus system) He demanded his culture be accepted as well or none at all.
White Milwaukeans were pissed.
The right wing talk radio denounced everybody else's cultural holidays & countered by going into the history of the person who began Kwanza called them nasty things.
Minorities, to non christians & some churches (mixed races) countered and went on about the origin of Santa, & compared him to the Pagan god, Thor. Shit went sideways real quick!
Some churches turned against each other- saying it's the liberals fault, they don't want Jesus to be acknowledged. << That was countered by minority churches asking- why isn't Jesus in the shopping malls telling kids if they're good or bad? Its a day for merchants, selling, drinking in Jesus' name.
A local TV channel did a segment devoted to how many crimes were committed during Christmas & blamed it on the christians who promte Santa over Jesus.
All this stemmed from a guy who wore a Santa hat (real beard) while driving city bus hollering at each stop HO! HO! HO!:-\;D:-\;)
