Another benn rematch would have been interesting.
There shouldn't have been any need for Watson v Eubank 2 ;)
Watson hands down won that first fight.
Watson was always the most gifted natural fighter of the Benn- Eubank era and remember he beat Benn far easier than Eubank and floored him with a jab to get the KO.
Eubank had an amazing will to win though but for me Watson was the best of that era but didnt sell tickets unfortunately!

The yanks mostly were terrified of Benn etc and rightly so and the excuses kept coming and coming, plenty calling out from across the pond but not many wanted any part of our boys with Benn battering Barkley and then GM.
All 3 were Londoners and then Calzaghe (also a Londoner ;)) took the baton and the rest is history.
Plus we had Bruno, Lennox and loads more and London was buzzing for the fight game back then, real golden era as a teenager and the Royal albert Hall is where I first started to watch fights live , amazing venue that and I wish they used it more these days.
Billy Joe Saunders was the last I remember being held there.
Watson seemed to be the best of the three to me
ebank was fortunate really with both wins over him, first was a liucky decision and the second was one punch
you have to say tho when you talk about the best chin in the business i dont think there have been many better than eubanks in history
always gave him a chance and the fights against Watson proved that
its a pity Watson never really got to show just how good he was which was mainly due to the out of ring rivalry between benn and eubank taking the headlines
Eubank was rock hard and if put down always recovered straight away.
Watson just didnt have that edge about him personality wise to put asses on seats.

Truly breathtaking stuff in the 11th round though, i wish it was stopped when Watson went down the first time though. It's such a shame what happened.
I agree that Watson was the most talented (Benn & Eubank also agree with this). I don't really know how good Eubank was or could've been because his opponents were clearly hand picked. Barry Hearn was on Ringside a few weeks and said Eubank had a 'Shopping List' for potential opponents, i.e a whole bunch of criteria that opponents could not have OR HE WOULD NOT FIGHT THEM.

Such a good character Watson and for him to still be alive is amazing. And for him years later to complete the London Marathon is an achievement.
James Toney or McCallum would have beaten Benn or Eubank all day imo, not to mention Roy Jones. The UK in no way ran the division.

McCallum smashed Watson to bits and would have done the same to Benn and Eubanks. Never mind what Roy and Toney would have done to them at the time.
I recently watched the first Eubank-Watson fight again and thought Eubank won. I can't even remember why it was called a "robbery" but I used to think that too? :-\
I wasn't much of a Eubank fan when he was in his pomp. I remember him in more bores than exciting fights. However, when I look at his fights now I actually really like his style. I definitely didn't appreciate how good he was back then. I'd love him if he was around today.
I agree I'd love to see Eubank and Benn in this era now. Imagine Froch-Benn how brutal of a fight that would be. Prime for prime!!
Benn and Toney have quite a few common opponents from that era. Benn was just as impressive, arguably more so, in dispatching them.
If Benn-McClellan had never happend, anyone today saying they think Benn would have beaten him would be getting told they're a "troll" or "they don't know boxing" etc
Whoever would have won between that lot - Roy, Benn, Eubank, Toney, etc - they would have been significant fights in boxing history, and boosted the record of the winner big time, that's for sure. Shame.
One of the forgotten ones outside of Britain. Incredible fighter and I think the best out of the bunch that seemed to rule that 160/168 area outside of Jones. Shame they could never get their ducks in a row and just fight.Quote:

Benn had the balls to take on the yanks and would be fearless against Jones and Toney no doubt about that. Eubanks had no inclination to fight them, especially after the Watson fight. Chris was beatable as Watson proved.
We will never know the winners and losers if things were different and the Benns , Jones, Eubanks and Toneys did fight back in the day but they would have been absolute wars thats for sure.
Watson is a total hero of mine and I've watched watched those youtube docs on his career and amazing recovery.
I've even made a mate watch a few when he was suicidle thru drink and drug abuse ...woman left him etc.
Basically he was inspired by watching Watson's fight back to get on his feet and it is an amazing story.
Wasnt it Ali who came to see him in intensive care then he amazingly started showing signs of recovery and actually spoke?
In the "Gloved battles of the bedroom" with my older bruv and his mates I always chose to be Watson.
Got the absolute fuck smashed out of me in the process as I was 3 years younger at only 12-13 and 2 of his mates and himself boxed..... I used to put it right on all of them until they connected hahaha
Watson said Ali was his motivation to beat benn by using the rope a dope tactics and tiring Nigel out.

In their second fight Watson had stepped up a few gears and was comfortably winning the fight, before Chris made possibly the best turn around in a fight I have ever seen-the heart and desire to win was what drove Eubank through to victory and although Watson had great skill and power, I believe that in Victory Michael would have went on to have an outstanding career-but even in defeat Chris would have achieved more, because the tragedy of that night was not only the unfortunate occurrences surrounding Watson, but that Chris also lost his killer instincts in the ring, he never looked like the same fighter to me afterwards!Quote:
