Re: Assault in the ring documentary
If I am right it ended Billy's career and he became an alcoholic and committed suicide?
-
It did sadly, his face was a write off even during the fight , amazing no one smelt a rat before it finished.
-
Re: Assault in the ring documentary
It is horiffic when the dad congratulates the opponent and notices there was no padding in his gloves. I think he may have suspected. Total crime which required a long custodial sentence.
-
Re: Assault in the ring documentary
Good post. Gold. Will be back to watch later...
-
And guess who got rich everytime whatever scenerio...bob arum

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
Man, just when I'm convinced Bob Arum is pure evil he talks and you know he's worse.

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
Seen the doc several times over the years and Panama Lewis is atop the dung heap. He should have gotten the same jail time Resto did. Banned from being in anyone's corner is a good consolation I suppose. I mean you would think the powers at be would have kept an eye on Lewis after the Arguello bottle incident captured on film. Its as tragic as Griffith accidentally killing Paret live on Abc or Mancini/Kim but worse because of its premeditated criminal nature.
-
Re: Assault in the ring documentary
What a sad story that is all around. At least Resto seemed to make amends with his conscience in the end. That Panama is a real scumbag.

I know right, the black bottle thing was only a year or so before as well. Just listen to Resto, sure he's older but clearly the guy is slow and wasn't behind the whole thing. That Lewis didn't see any prison time is almost as revolting as the night itself was when you take everything into consideration, he was a world class trainer with lots of guys in his stable, Resto was a despserate journeyman(not to excuse him of being a despicable one guilty of a brutal assault). They should have looked into the third party betting thing as well and forced the slimeball who met with Lewis to donate all of his winning to Collins' family. And then had he and Panama Lewis play a game of William tell on a tightrope strung over a shark tank:mad:

Its a been a while since I've seen the documentary and I fully blame YOUNG Resto. But, Resto now really is a sad, broken and slow as you say, man. God bless him and he's a pitiable person.
-
Re: Assault in the ring documentary
For sure, he obviously wasn't a moral man, but you can also understand how loads of fighters in his position could go along with such a thing.
Lewis on the other hand :vd:. To act and dress like a pea-cocking thug as a senior citizen is enough to make anyone a pretty unsympathetic character imo, but hearing him talk about this and still deny wrong doing, and even expect pity himself, is another level of disgusting.
-
Re: Assault in the ring documentary
Ha, shows me to post without actually having watched the whole thing myself huh;D Always thought Lewis didn't serve any jail time for some reason, guess he did. Still, should have been a lot more than Resto.

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
I find it ironic that just about all boxing fans are utterly disgusted with Panama Lewis yet dozens of fighters still hired him to train them - Tyson, Judah, Gatti, Botha, Ibragimov etc
What does that say about boxing?

He probably charges a low fee and he's not a bad trainer so...... fighters tryin to save money....
I dont see why fighters should not hire him if he can help them win fights.

Indeed although he has not been allowed in a corner since Collins on this continent. I remember seeing him sitting in the bar for a Judah fight. Shame they didn't have iphones then. He could have at least texted in some advice.

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
The fighters, some of whom are heroes to millions, must think like Finito - he's a good trainer so it doesn't matter what he's done wrong.
Therefore, why are fans so outraged by his actions?
Was his crime really that bad?
-
Re: Assault in the ring documentary
Ya well this is not 1880 and Resto in not John L Sullivan. Perhaps they should have just removed the gloves. Resto had the punching power of a 47.5 hour Med Fly. They die at 48. Its just as criminal to me that nobody bothered throughout the fight. How could some official not know something was afoot? They should do a dime a piece for incompetence.
Fighters pick celebrity trainers and have for close to a century. Garcias telephone program worked wonders for Donaire.

Obviously this is alot bit worse than margarito antics..but lets compare
Yet again, bob gets away with only a year suspension and he still lands a massive payday with pac and another with cotto!
I know im alone on this but i believe that he would have had plaster in the fight against cotto and changed cottos career and life by cheating.
He should have been jailed but yet again nothing happens when that c@nt bob arum is involved.

Dont even compare margarito to resto. You got to Get your facts straight. There were traces of substance of paris in margos gloves.

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
There was less padding in the gloves....?
My best friend had a pro record of 8-1-1, with 1 KO. The fight where he scored his one ko, they were taking pictures before the fight, during the afternoon. The gloves had no padding in them at all, and those were the fight gloves and everybody knew it.
When my friend learned that the 'bag gloves for the pictures' were the fight gloves, he almost cried. Being a fighter, he went on with the fight. But he left his boxer style in the locker room, figuring that he'd get busted up fighting with those gloves. He went out and scored a first round ko, the only ko of his career.
My point is that, for many years and in many places, guys fought with fucked up gloves and just dealt with it. No commissions and fighting in the other guy's hometown to make extra money, that is, historically, boxing.
If Billy Collins, may he rest in peace, was getting pot-shotted by a journeyman, in his first step up, he had probably gone as far as he was going anyway.

For further perspective, guys like Gunboat Smith and Tommy Burns and Jack Johnson fought with 4 oz gloves. Corbett and Sullivan and Fitzsimmons fought with leather driving gloves with ZERO padding. In the old days, guys sparred with less padding in the gloves than Collins fought with.

Good point(s).
I bet those old guys would never pass a modern medical.

Its a strange thing trying to make this sport safer. It's almost oxymoronic since so many fans these days prefer a brawl over a technical match.
Regarding the gloves I think you have to do a many decade long study to see if at the end of the day less trauma is received by a boxer if there's more padding on the gloves or less. The argument would be that if its less padding, he takes less overall punches before he's KO'd but then the likelihood of them going blind or seriously injured right away would increase. Tough call and I have no idea which would be the safer choice for the fighter, asides the obvious choice of elevating your defense.

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
That was a great documentary, I've got a fair amount of sympathy for Resto because he just a fall guy for people to make money off him and I don't think he knew how serious his actions would turn out to be. As for Panama, the mains a con man pure and simple, of course he knew what was going on but thanks to the powers that be who must of made a lot of money from the fight, he's still earning a living from boxing.

Re: Assault in the ring documentary
How many trainers out there are rotten, Lewis made a big mistake he got caught how many
have got away with cheating, quite a few I bet.
Lewis is a shit bag ,! but how many more out there as we talk.;)

Resto knew exactly what was going on with his gloves.
Look at his reaction when he's caught out, like one of the guys on the doc says....
If he knew nothing he would have looked down at the gloves baffled and confused instead of gazing over at Lewis for help.
A fighter would know as soon as he put those gloves on that they felt totally different.
Dont be fooled... Resto knew ;)
