Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
Ukraine's Vasyl Lomachenko is not your normal prospect.
The 25-year-old southpaw is as gifted -- offensively and defensively -- as any fighter to come into the pro game in years. As an amateur, he went a reported 396-1 (avenging the defeat twice) and won two Olympic gold medals, at featherweight in 2008 (when he also collected the Val Barker trophy as the Games' most outstanding boxer) and lightweight in 2012. He won world amateur championships in 2009 and 2011.

Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
Looking at Dan Rafael's previous prospect of the year list this poor cunt is well and truly bocked.
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
;D
You wouldn't want him picking your lottery numbers ......
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
how do people think he will do vs Salido ??
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
So that fights on huh? Will be pretty cool to see. I think he'll completely beat the tar out of Salido without many problems myself, but you never know as he hasn't been rounds as a pro.

I saw it mentioned on the ring magazine website Bob Arum: Orlando Salido-Vasyl Lomachenko 'done' for March 1 | RingTV
but its not on boxrec yet. Its good to see Lomachenko having an opportunity to fight for a title early in his career and hes not being held back. But as you said he hasn't had many pro rounds so maybe some more rounds wouldn't have hurt his progression. Hes still young at 25, but this could still pay off and he can look impressive and get some good fights in 2014.
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
If you consider him a prospect he's the guy of the year, I know some refuse to accept him as a prospect due to the fact he's an immediate "contender". Interesting that ESPN have gone with him as a prospect, poor guy is now officially cursed.
The advantage of being a Naoya Inoue cheerleader is that I know Fat Dan can't curse my guy!

Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
If he can beat a true badass like Salido in his 2nd fight, then he's truely on his way.
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
Vasyl Lomachenko will be a World Champion this year ,Salido is going to take a beating.;)
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
Yeah..... he's the antithesis of the Canelo's and Chavez Jr's of the world. They're bringing him up awful fast, whereas these other guys fight 50 bums before seeing a live opponent. Polar opposites.

Wouldn't be nice to see amateurs actually taking fights to improve their development rather than just pad their records ;)

Yes it would. Unfortunately that didn't happen to the late Sulaiman's proteges. They come from the school of "record padding". Hype the shit out of them.... feed them bums for 40-50 fights.... and award undeserved PPV status. Hell... with that M.O. even Boy George would've been a boxing champion.

It's not undeserved if the PPV sales. Hate all you want on Alvarez and Chavez but bottom line is they can turn a profit on PPV. Put Verdejo or Dularme on PPV and I guarantee you it bombs. Even if by some miracle there family were some how able to afford it they still wouldn't get it

Yeah I understand the need for building a prospect a little, you don't want anything to stiff or dangerous. You want your young fighter to build confidence and learn as he progresses. Not everyone is going to be as capable as Rigondeaux or Lomachenko right out of the box ;D but each fight should be a step up of some sort, opponent has a good chin, more experienced, a southpaw, power, speed etc

Well like with anything else, you got your normal process and you got your extremes. Normal process you develop the boxer little by little.... increasing the quality of his opponents gradually. It's the blueprint used by most fighters. Then you got your extremes. In Loma's case, the guy's such an otherworldly talent that they're literally giving him world-class opposition right off the bat. Well... that and his vaunted amateur record. On the other extreme, you got your Canelo's and Junior's. The other 99% of the boxing population get brought along normally.
Re: Prospect of year: Vasyl Lomachenko - ESPN Video
I totally agree with the comments on the way to develop a fighter, but Rigo and Lom
are different animals they have the tools and experience,! and of course talent and natural
ability. When you see someone special, as Lomachenko you no he does not have go the
normal route, as he is head and shoulders above his opposition.;)

Agreed. It is inspiring and fresh to see ;D I'd prefer to see I guy with a 16-2 record but 12 of those opponents were competitive challenges :-X
