Jean Pascal - Lucian Bute, fight discussion thread and picks

Both former champs, but no doubt are both good fighters in my eyes. This is apparently this Mayweather-Pacquiao of Canadian boxing, so theres a lot at stake for both fighters and im sure they will both be extra hyped for this one. A win does put either fighter back into contention for pushing for a title so its a very important fight for both of their careers IMO. I think Bute is a bit busier than Pascal, but Bute has shown he can be hit as well. Pascal needs a good start and be able to hurt Bute. Im not too sure who to pick in this one, as I could see either fighter winning, but maybe slightly leaning towards Bute.

Pascal has fought once in the past one year.. inactivity combined with bad shoulder doesnt look to good.

Bute beats him.

I could agree with that, hes fought twice since losing to B hop in may 2011. Bute hasn't looked the best though in his last couple of outings, but no doubt has shown in the past his worth.

Bute also didn't fight in 2013

Pascal will come to fight, but will get the $#!t knocked out of him and knocked out by a Bute crushing left to the body inside 7 rds. It'll be a good scrap while it lasts...

Pascal should rematch dawson if he loses.. there is some unfinished business there as far as im concerned..

They are getting 2 million each for this. One or both could be cashing out. I think Bute is personally unless 175 has changed him. Froch's destruction took something from him. Both are favourites of mine but I think Pascal will get to Bute and stop him around the mid way point. That is, unless a rogue ham sandwich isn't thrown at the ring and nails him in the shoulder. I just think Pascal is going to explode on him. Bute has that killer uppercut though and Pascal does get caught by that punch a fair bit. The atmosphere for that fight will be unreal with the talk of a Stevenson fight no doubt to follow. Sadly boxing in this country begins and ends in Quebec. It wont even make the last page of the sports section west of that Province.

Pascal is a pretty disappointing fighter, just always seems to be waiting for something

im leaning towards pascal coz bute seems a bit brittle

and pascal has fought at a higher weight

its funny, if froch bute had never happened the overwhelming opinion would be bute would batter him

I think Pascal takes him. Hopefully this will lead to Pascal vs. Steveson down the line.

We Brits like Pascal because he had a barnstormer with Froch when they fought.

Bute looked shocking last time out and that was over a year ago. I think it's Bute who is cashing out here. Pascal wins.

Pascal has had a serious injury, so both fighters best days may be over. I hope I am wrong and Pascal wins. He is a friend of Froch and they have an agreement to have a rematch.

If Bute is not a headcase after the Ko losses, I think Pascal is there to be methodically picked apart. I've never seen Pascal throw a shot that was hard to see coming. Pascals feet just seemed to be all over the place for me. He not as limited as Miranda but I can definitely see something similar possibly happening. Then again that was a different Bute. :confused:

@J_Undisputed - good break-down. How much will the weight play a role? This is at 175. Historically, Pascal's weight class, not Bute's. Even if Bute can pick apart Pascal, will Pascal walk through his punches? It looked like Grachev was able to walk through some big punches from Bute in his only other fight above 168 that I'm aware of.

Still, this is an exciting fight that I'm looking forward to.

This is a 50 50 fight and one I feel NOT TO BET ON, not sure who will win this one.

Pascal KO between 5 and 9. Pascal looked good in his last fight. Butes inactivity may be a problem and also he may never have been at the level of Pascal/Froch in the 1st place?

Oh i agree. definitely a good fight. The weight issue doesnt seem to be a huge issue to me. Pascals a quick guy and can generate some power. While Bute might be accused of being punchy at this point, if he sticks to keeping his gaurd high, i think its just easier for him to see Pascals punches and weather the storm than it is for pascal to avoid punches once his legs go. My concern is pascal not respecting Bute enough to fight a smart fight and doubling the force on a bute punch by lunging into it. hopkins and dawson came on late in their outings against pascal after pascal wore himself out. Pascal is not a guy who likes to get hit and when he goes straight back and falls back to the ropes, Bute could have his opportunity to line up his money punches.

This is definitely a fight Bute can win if he boxes the entire 12 rounds... he has to move and box and pot shot Pascal. Carry this to a decision- a decision he can win.

Bute getting KOd Pascal looks in great shape.

No idea who wins or how good I expect this fight to be, they are both kind of wild cards right now. Neither has looked any good for well over a year or two, but Pascal hasn't had the same cobwebs to shake off, plus he has a chin to begin with. Question is whether he'll be throwing with intent himself, he did a lot of posturing and waiting around against that tomato can he fought last time out, if he tries to much of that I could see Bute winning just by being decent and boxing. Wouldn't surprise me to see Pascal blitz him either though:dontknow:

Bute is just the better fighter. He has the talent but does he have the heart? I've been going back and forth on this fight. I'm picking Bute because he can put punches together and that's the way he can beat Pascal. Still I wouldn't bet on it.

Not sure about the tape. Maybe that he'll do his talking in the ring. Maybe he's been censored by the promoters? Roy Jones Jr. will be working pascals corner for this one, if that means anything.

I hope it means Roy is considering retiring from the ring. I would be inspired if he was in my corner. Has Roy ever done that for any other fighter.

I started a thread after the Froch fight. The title was is Bute damage goods? We're going to find out tonight. He's damn sure good enough but is he tough enough? That is what cost him his fight with Froch. Froch is hard as nails. Bute couldn't overcome that. I see Pascal jumping on Bute early. To find out just how tough he is. If Bute can keep his cool a counter Pascal is dead. If Bute is damage goods then he's fighting the wrong man.

I keep flip flopping. I hate it when two faves fight. Bute looks like his quiet confident self again. Butes best punch has always been the outside uppercut catching people coming in and Pascal has always been susceptible for an uppercut. I still think Pascal but I'm not as sure as I was. Pascal looks ripped.
I have not been this excited about an all Canuck showdown since Hilton/Ouellet or Hart/Furlano 3.

I'll pick Bute. I hope his chin holds up.

Pascal and earlier than Froch did it.

Froch showed that if your brave enough to march forward and theow, you will land because Bute doesnt really have the skill or brains to mive away rather than sit on the ropes.

Pascal seems to have a pretty good chin and will walk in looking sloppy because he is and because of Butes southpaw stance but as soon as Pascal starts letting his punches go, Bute will go in to a shell and then its a matter of time.
