Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
Certainly is for me.. this is THE fight that turned me into a hardcore Boxing guy. If there is such thing as love at first sight, this fight did it for me instantly..
What do you remember about this fight?

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
It should of never been stopped. Hearns was exhausted but he wasn't getting beat up. He should of been allowed to make it out the round and get his minute rest

Debatable but the result was inevitable imo.. Look what happened in the rematch, the fight was identical to the first one..
Hearns has the upperhand in the early-midrounds, then fatigue kicks in and Leonard comes alive to take over..
They could have fought 5x and I can't imagine things turning out any other way..

No, not all all, not by a country mile.
Classic fight, but far from favorite fight of all-time.

Apparently you have never been inside the ring

Great fight. Good stoppage. Both guys proved their greatness in this one. I thought Tommy won the rematch easy, but Ray refused to lose in this one.
Hagler vs Hearns was the first fight I saw, and it is still my favorite to this day.

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
No. But it's up there with my all-time favs, 'cause it had all the ingredients. Two already great fighters living up to the fight hype. A fight with ebb and flow (love that). A 15-round fight, the way championship fights still ought to be. Leonard turning from boxer to puncher and Hearns from puncher to boxer.
Yep.... it's pretty up there among my favorite fights.

I have yet to meet one person who believes Leonard deserved the draw in the rematch. Hearns won the 2nd fight

I think its the magnitude of the matchup more than it actually being the best fight.
Two great WW champs , Macklin v Moore was maybe a better fight in your opinion but hardly caught the imagination of the whole World.

macklin moore wasnt the best fight in my opinion, it was the best fight and thats a fact
leonard hearns only had a bigger audience coz there are more people in america and it had a better marketing campaign and more people watched american tv at the time across the world, most countries didnt even have their own tv channels so they had to watch americans
the british title is still the original and most coverted belt in the world, we dont have silver champions and super champions and interim champions, we have the champion which means you are the best in britain and britain is the best country in the world, and so all this means that the macklin moore fight had more on the line than leonard hearns and was therefore a better fight as well as being a better fight

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
When that fight happened, it was on ON TV, which was a subscription service and we didn't have it. I walked around, all over the place, until I found some people having a party in their back yard, with a big, old style projection screen to watch the fight. I stood there looking over their fence until their dog came and barked at me, then I'd walk around the block, come back and watch until the dog barked again.

As many here will disagree with you and it isn't a known fact , then you will find it is your opinion that Moore v Macklin was the best fight . - FACT

I have not seen it all but will sit down and watch it. This was certainly better than Tito v Oscar.

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
I always consider Leonard the best of the 4 and always rank him in my toplist of lb for lb fighters.
Hearns is definitely up there too but he was more vulnerable.

My first memories of Leonard were not of his fights, but of his commentary on Tyson's early fights!! :)
-
Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
Max exactly how old are since you were in Tyson's era i guess at least late 20's early 30's. Anyway Fight shows Leonard had levels that most fighters will never have. His offense is one of the greatest there has ever been and his chin on fucking stone which a lot fighters found out about him.

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
I am 33 just turned for your future reference.

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
Aw shit well you almost got a decade on me i am 24 anyhow i will agree with you on Leonard at least. I fell Leonard could beat Mayweather today clear ud with some trouble he would just out land him. The funny thing is i think Hearns is the worst match up for Mayweather Because Hearns really never lost because he got out boxed. The way you have to beat him is go through his shots and knock him out pretty much ever lose but most of them were greats. Hill was Hearns last great fight i feel hell of thing to go to Lhw from ww and win against a Legit guy. Cw he was kinda just hanging around but he still had power even at that weight which was pretty crazy thing to imagine 50 pound difference in division. Anyhow i don't really know how rank the others after Leonard because they all had a pretty good say in there own way Radar should been fab group i think as well.

Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
They were beyond doubt some of the best boxers from one of the strongest eras of Welter/Middle of all time :)
-
Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
Let me ask you, as a group, this question...Hearns was coming out fast and knocking guys out. He kept on doing that for another several years (mostly). Why did he box leonard? His best weapons were his reach, his right hand, and his leverage, yet he never set down to punch. Why did he box Leonard instead of trying to hurt him?
-
Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
Yep, role-reversal happened there.
Going into the fight, people thought it would be the power of KO artist Thomas Hearns versus the skill and boxing ability of Ray Leonard.
Instead, right after they mixed it up at the start, it became the Boxing ability of Thomas Hearns versus the power of Ray Leonard.
Hearns had come in way too light which hurt his punch resilience and his endurance.
After initially being aggressive against Leonard, then Hearns got cracked, his legs began doing the Zab Judah Shuffle which was always the tell-tale sign throughout Hearns' career when Hearns got hit a good one: his legs would do the funky chicken.
Anyway, Hearns boxed him because he had too. Leonard was forcing the fight. And despite Hearns' greater punching power, Hearns wasn't winning in the shootouts... so he boxed him.
-
Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
He was far less durable than Leonard who was of such well rounded ability that Thomas was going to get hit. I think Leonard would have worked him out even if he did come in a few lbs heavier.
-
Re: Is Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns your favorite fight of all-time?
Many great fights. Hearns - Leonard is in the mix, but I do not consider it the best ever. I really like Foreman - Lyle, but many other great ones: Pryor - Arguello, Chavez - Taylor, Ali - Frazier (pick one), Hagler - Hearns, even lesser fighters as Ward - Gatti I or Corrales - Castillo.
Or you can say a great fight is a master boxer showing his skill destroying a fine fighter. For example, Ricardo Lopez taking Rocky Lin to the school.
