John L Sullivan vs Vitali Klitschko

According to the leading philosophy of the OTNB community, the longer ago a fighter reigned the greater their boxing acumen was.

I already heard how the great Muhammad Ali could dance his way to a victory against Wladimir Klitschko.

I've already been schooled how Joe Louis would be a challenge for Lennox Lewis.

Recently I have found myself humbled that Jack Dempsey is a deadlock for Mike Tyson,

And Jack Johnson is the equivalent of Vitali Klitschko.

Therefore the next logical step in this saga would probably be John L Sullivan?

Surely he must have been the greatest boxer who ever lived? I mean given how far back that was, there mustn't be anybody who could hold a candle to this drunken booze bag today or in recent times?

I expect Sullivan to be able to massacre Riddick Bowe within a round or 2..

I thought I would follow the logical conclusion of what some of the guys around here are getting at, that the weaker and more rudimentary boxers get the further back in time the more formidable they were. So I took the liberty of taking the next logical step and concluded that JLS must have been the greatest of all time. :)

I live in Australia remember, we have Aussie rules footy over here right. Do you suppose we watch the latest matches on telly and support the current sides? Of course. We pay respects to teams and players past to be sure but we don't routinely watch 1950's footy matches and make outrageous claims like that one could beat the current Essendon footy team do we!

I think in a bare knuckle fight over 100 rounds I doubt Vital I would even dare get in the ring with Sullivan. His brother wlad would wet himself.

Wlad would undoubtedly beat the Boston Strong Boy in a boxing ring, but I'm not sure he would in a bar fight after a pint of brandy.

All I got to say to that is that to be in the sport of boxing usually requires one to be somewhat of a fighter in the first place.

If you think what can be done in a boxing doesn't translate fairly closely to what might be accomplished on the streets, especially at HW, then I think you are mistaken. The ring is a sport sure but it is still a fight and I'm pretty sure Vitali Klitschko could beat Sullivan regardless of lack of rules barehanded.

Even more wussier Wladimir I could not imagine being thrashed by a guy like that, I mean seriously, some of you guys will find any avenue to have the old timer come up trumps.

100 rounder you say? A "round" back then was a KD was it not? I would judge then that a fight between a Klit and Sullivan would not go nearly 100 rounds.

Boxing and a street fight is totally different.

Klit brothers are too smart to get involved in any such fight. They would not even become fighters in those days. Probably politicians and doctors.

Sullivan would make sure it went many rounds by any means necessary if you catch my drift.

Vitali and Wladimir do not get into streetfights now, they aren't that stupid no. When they were younger, before they got into boxers, they had to be fighters!

Sure boxing and street fighting is vastly different but mate, any pro boxer is going to more than likely clean up in most street fights he is involved in.

I wouldn't see either Klitschko losing too many street fights were they to engage in them.
