Is there anyone from 160-175 who could beat a prime Jones?
NO
Roy Jones
Ezzard Charles, gene Tunney. Hagler. He is far from unbeatable. Billy Conn. Archie Moore. Bob Foster.
Michael Moorer
Some good choices there. Roy's probably my favourite post ww2 fighter all time but if I can shelf my bias I think there are several also and at 160 he never really stayed long enough. Had he peaked at that weight sure but he didn't.
160
Greb
Burley
Langford
Steele
Benton
Williams
Watson
168
Cal
Langford
Eubank
Benn
Liles
175
Langford
Charles
Spinks
Moore
Loughran
Lol. Oh gawwwwd.
We forgot the obvious, the G-man
Roy never would have fought him, Roys words. The reach, speed, power, tanacity. Roy couldn't handle it with headgear, he admitted he wanted none of it professionally.
Edit-Roy was obviously a better fighter but it's a nightmare matchup. And this is who COULD beat Roy not who would beat Roy.
Saad Muhammad- er, matt franklin. I'd love to see 'RJJ' fight a guy that is hard to hurt, in't scared, and keeps punching. Marvin johnson. Dwight Muhammad Qawi. He is so so so far from unbeatable. Eddie Gregory/Mustapha Muhammad. In the 1970s he'd go 28-7.
Micheal Spinks would wreck Jones his style was all wrong for him and he was undefeated with a better resume at lhw. Had reach and size and power and chin over Jones. The only man to beat him was a Prime Mike Tyson and that was heavyweight. Micheal Spinks would win most times then not only guy i can say that would out doubt beat him. Jones was a great fighter but at lhw beside aging Hill who was just defeated and Body snatcher who was in his 40's his opponents at lhw left a lot to the imagination hell he never even fought the Lineal champ at the weight.
I love Roy, but I think he did avoid lots of heavy opposition. He was more an entertainer or stunt man in the ring, not a fighter.
Was Eric Harding the one to have given Jones the most problems prior to the downhill??? Very shifty slick style himself. I had him winning 4 before his arm went fubar. I do think Jones jr and his water walking unbeatable status gets more inflated as we go. The guy was hit clean coming up more than once...not dropped or killed...but there were gloves that actually touched his face. True story ;D
The question is who could not who would and for some of you that started watching the sport in the 1990's that's probably a hard concept to grasp and frankly I dont give a shit. Some of you are infatuated with crucifying previous eras and fighters on a daily basis. Gets tiresome. Sam Langford is in the minds of many historians the greatest light-heavyweight that ever lived and yet seemingly dismissed out of hand by some. As much as many of these fellas may not have seen a Roy Jones, it is also true that Roy Jones never saw anyone like them.
I hear you but you know what, don't put me in the 90s bracket because I got into boxing before that.
I got into Boxing in the late 80s when I was around 8 years old. When other kids my age were into Teenaged mutant ninja turtles and GI Joe, I was into the sweet science.
I was already deep into the game by the 90s and that's when I went back and studied all the fighters from the golden era. I did my history lesson long time ago my friend and I stand by my belief about these old school fighters.
I think if we exchange boxing with porn, your monologue would sound almost like naked bare truth about yourself:).

Ok finto how familiar are you with the Jinx then because if you watch that man at light heavy he was a fucking monster and cleared out his division. Jones was neck and neck with Griffin before the dq happened sure the rematch was a blow out but Roy was not unstoppable. Also I lose a lot respect for a man who did not fight the Lienel champ and just beat the left overs. Also yea Dm lost to a guy Jones beat but he was like 35 by then and look how Jones did at that age maybe a year older fucking getting shit packed by Taver and Johnson does that make them better. Spinks had a weird style, monster power, a lot more reach and he had a chin of steel was never put on the mat at Lhw also never lost. Not to mention he fought the main guy for the belt and cleared out everyone before going up and beating the main man again at heavyweight not for just some fucking belt. I don't think Jones had enough to keep Spinks away and i believe if Spinks lands its pretty much over because the man hit like a train at the weight i just don't see if going well for Jones when fighting Spinks more so then anyone who ever fought at the weight.
Maybe at 160, because that was the first 3 years of Jones' career so the inexperience factor of 160 Jones would definitely come into play if you were stacking him up against true career middleweights.
But at 168 to 175? Not a chance. Unfortunately people seem to judge Roy on the past 10 years while he was washed up and fighting to get out of tax debt. They see that he's been knocked out a bunch of times, some by relatively weak punchers like Glen Johnson, and come to the conclusion that, "hey, if Glen Johnson could knock him out, a KO artist like Archie Moore or Bob Foster would have killed him!"
People unfortunately forget how freakishly good Jones was in his prime. This was a guy with maybe the greatest reflexes in boxing history, a guy who was incredibly fast of hand and feet, and had legit one-punch KO power in each hand. That's another thing people forget. Roy wasn't a guy to take risks and try to chase a KO, but if he saw and opening or had a guy hurt he could close the show with deadly precision.
Anyone from 168-175 in the history of boxing gets eaten alive by Jones. He was truly one of a kind.
Nobody is forgetting a thing. The question is could. There's a reason for the expression "anything can happen in boxing". We're just looking at who had better chances than others. Roy is the most gifted boxer I've ever seen, doesn't mean he couldn't be beat.
Guys with the best chances (not surefire winners, but guys who would give him a run)....
Tommy Hearns
Bob Foster
Michael Spinks
Dwight Qawi
Gerald McClellan
Julian Jackson
Really super short list and I'm sure I left out some people but RJJ in his prime was amazing. Defensively akin to a young Muhammad Ali, didn't even really have to block shots, he just avoided getting hit but he had insane combination handspeed but also with 1 punch KO power.
RJJ is one of the few guys who could score a flash knockdown with handspeed alone but also just turn the lights out on you with his power...dangerous boxer in his prime
Oh well fuck if you're talking about who COULD, than that's a long list. Pretty much any 168-175 boxer in history who reached an elite level COULD have beat him, because the old "puncher's chance" idiom gives any of them a chance.
Hell, I COULD have beaten Roy Jones if he walked into one of my punches before he obliterated me.
Who gives a shit who could have done anything, or who might have had the best chance?
Jones lost a lot after coming back but during his prime at 175 anyhow who was it that he beat that was so amazing really. Still going with Spinks by destruction because he was very dominant against better guys and most people rember Tyson fight but beside that Spinks never lost and was never put down.
Guess my name automatically discredits my obvious answer....
Could or would beat Prime Jones? No in history from 160-175...
Only guy that has routinely been pitted in hypothetical match up against natural light heavies and heavies. When he started at 154. That's nuts, almost a subconscious admission that he'd smash anyone under 175.
Not many if any!
Andre Ward would beat Roy, but only if Roy would fight him. Roy looks like an ATG vs the no hopers he fought for the majority of his career. He had the talent to beat anyone, but never proved himself by taking on the biggest challenges. Roy has about the weakest resume of guys he is often compared to. It's great that u studied boxing when u were 8 and all, but to say that beating guys like Glenn Kelly and Tony Thornton prove Roy would Dominate Spinks, Foster, Moore, Conn...etc., is laughable. Roy was a phenom, no doubt. Every truly great fighter came back after a loss, however, and proved their greatness. Roy never did. First good shot he took ruined him. He is basically a larger version of Donald Curry who had the luxury of fighting weak opposition while maintaining his HBO contract.
Wanted to bring up this topic again and still say that Spinks would knock out Jones. The more i look into his fights the more i think Spinks is the greatest lhw of all time. His time in the lhw division was considered on of the best of all time and he crushed everyone and was never beat at the weight.
He lost to Montell Griffith and then went on a long run of being untouchable in fact the only reason he went on to become a guy prone to getting knocked out was because he dropped from 195 or so back down to 175....had RJJ just stayed at cruiserweight instead of going back down to lightheavy he would have been just fine
Rocky would not even land a shot on Spinks and the fight would look like guy who simply could not get clean shot on the other. Rocky looked good against guys who were in there late 30's not young and peak champs Spinks gave Holmes all he could handle which no thought would happen.
Roy had the natural gifts and unorthodox style to trouble and beat anyone in history. That being said, he feasted on weak competition after James Toney, and that made him seem much more invincible than he truly was. Ezzard Charles knocked out a young, prime Archie Moore. He was boxing Marciano silly both times, prior to wearing down. It's funny to me that people come on here and actually ask the question "could anyone ever have beaten Roy in his prime?" It's asinine and shows a lack of knowledge of the sport.
Good post. He should have tried to make a fight with Britons Fab 4 during his 160-168 run. They also share the blame. All parties seemed satisfied with dominating their portion but not the whole pie. He should have made the Dariusz fight.
You post made me think. I was scoffed at for mentioning Burley and the man beat Charles twice at 160. I forgot about a couple of his stable mates in Holman Williams and Jack Chase.
Kinda of bummer he never got to fight the russain either at light heavyweight which was not all his fault either just sucks. His best wins are Hop, Tony, Hill and Taver his resume could of looked so much better then it was but that what happens in boxing a lot of time now.
Great light heavyweights like Foster, Ezzard and Spinks would beat Roy Jones but no one under super middleweight.
Yea i can not really think of anyone that could beat him Monzon get shock by shot he did not see, Hagler had trouble with Leonard movement also Jones is bigger and hits harder. The size of the other heavyweights who also had huge reach and speed them selfs plus great timing.
Hey master besides 175 because you and me both feel there are guys that can beat him at the weight what fighter below 175 do you think has the best chance. Out of all the fighters i would most likely favor Jones but who is the guy that would have best percentage to take it maybe.
Joe Calzaghe who handled Roy with ease when they fought way past their best. There were glimpses of what Joe could have done to give prime Jones problems. Joe could adjust to fights as he did with Kessler, had experience to handle the hype of Roy like he did with Lacy, Joe had an engine and punch rate like no other, southpaw nightmare for Roy. I would say 30% chance of winning.
That's what has always bugged me about his run after Toney. Honestly he was the hbo poster boy and feasted on a handful of guys shoveled into the 168 #1 spot. Then goes up in weight..a catchweight..to short circuit a worn Sosa. Impressive demolitions yeh, but just keeping a trinket but not facing best a division had to offer. Pazienza was like tossing Ikea furniture into a wood chipper and everyone knew it.
