Nonito Donaire fires Robert Garcia... Employs his dad
MANILA, Philippines — In more ways than one, Nonito Donaire Jr. is going back to his roots.
Admitting that his one-punch game-plan is not going to work in the long run, Donaire said Tuesday he will employ a different strategy in his career that also involved replacing renowned Mexican trainer Robert Garcia with his father, Nonito Sr., as trainer.
Donaire (32-2-0 with 21 knockouts) held a presser to announce his May 31 title fight against World Boxing Association champion Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa (26-2-0 with 15 KOs) at Venetian Macau. The fight will be carried by ABS-CBN and HBO.
The 31-year-old Donaire said last year was “the crossroads of my career where I questioned myself, is this what’s important to me? Or have I reached the pinnacle of my career.”
Seated beside him at Edsa Shangri-La ballroom was his father, who will train him for the first time since 2007.
Donaire Sr. had a much-publicized feud with his son but patched things up before Nonito stopped Vic Darchinyan last year. Donaire struggled against Darchinyan before his vaunted left hook bailed him out in the 9th.
Earlier that year, he lost his 122 titles to Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux, who exposed Donaire’s unhealthy reliance on landing a big punch instead of throwing combinations.
Now, Donaire said he and his father will focus on his old “cerebral style.”
“With my father at my side, we can unleash my full potential, my true potential,” he said.

I don't blame Garcia but Donaire has had a terrible approach for a long time now. Hopefully he stops loading up and lets his hands go. Rigondeaux would work him again but others should not.

I don't think Garcia should be accountable.. I doubt he told Nonito to abandon the jab and look for one punch.
One thing I didnt like though was how he trained Nonito over the " cellphone " instead of training him for real. lol
Nonito has a big ego and he seems to like having alot of yes man around him.. First he fired his dad for Garcia and now he's canning him to back to his dad..

Is this actually a new story? He's been with his dad at the ALA Gym in the Philippines this week sparring with a Cuban kid.

Garcia is a vastly overrated celebrity trainer and Donaire was and is a vastly overrated celebrity fighter. To bad he cant fire himself. Its all good when you are a lightweight fighting at 118 and 122 and making highlight reels knocking out people who look like children in comparison. Quite another when you meet someone close to your size with more skill.

Awesome honest post. Now he is up against another so so champion . The guy fought one truly talented fighter and lost. Now he can fight Mickey Garcia and get KTFO . But being that his career is being led much like Pac's not likely Arum allows him to get ruined.

Donaire already screwed himself by being a clean fighter during his prime years. Now he's going to have to start using PED's as his reflexes diminish without knowing how to cycle properly. What a fool:p

For a guy who claims to be an old school fan, you are acting no differently than those young fans who dismiss fighters after one loss. Donaire has lost one fight in 12 years and now he is vastly overrated?
I bet you didn't think that when he knocked out Montiel.

Love hearing people shit-talk Donaire, a true champion, an action fighter, a knockout artist, a guy who VOLUNTARILY subjects himself to VADA testing to show the fans that he is genuine and not a steroid cheat, a guy who was considered a top p4p fighter forever before losing to Rigondeaux, one of the slickest, craftiest motherfuckers in boxing.

Thanks. Facts at times are unpleasant to the ears.

Lol you know that was probably just a publicity stunt, (the whole random thing). His chemist was no doubt top rate and had one of those undetectable designer peds where a test is not even available yet.

Best post I've seen about Donaire! Boxing fans can stop on a dime and change direction instantly, we really are a fickly bunch.

Was never a fan of the guy or his squeaky clean image and always though he was an overrated hype job being created by Arum to slide into Mannys place. A magicians trick who was fooling people by fighting guys half his size. Rigo merely sustained that fact.

Re: Nonito Donaire fires Robert Garcia... Employs his dad
Besides if Joe Louis is a 200 pound plodder and anyone prior to 1984 not worthy of boxing greatness then wtf is with Donaire? A one handed fighter that made a name for himself fighting midgets.

Please. The emotional card is just as lame.

There is nothing I find more peculiar than the concept Donaire of all people is clean. Maybe he is. But BEFORE he decided to do random testing he hired the guy most famous for beating random testing. We have absolutely no idea if Donaire is clean or not. Guilt by association isn't fair but it's part of life.

Re: Nonito Donaire fires Robert Garcia... Employs his dad
I saw a few interviews where Donaire said his heart isn't in boxing anymore. Is his biggest problem himself.

That is because Arum is no longer into him. Top Ranks well has run dry with opponents. All opponents of merit belong to GBP.

Nope just too many fighters he never faced at the top of their game. All his big fights were against questionable talent with .500 winning percentage at best in last 2-6 fights. No Mares, Santa Cruz, Garcia . Only little known belt holders and ex champions ala Pac style compliments of Arum.

Re: Nonito Donaire fires Robert Garcia... Employs his dad
Well i would not say he is overrated but most of the guys he has faced look like they were kids compared to him really. He had a huge size advantage over everyone and reach then fights a another guy his size and gets a lesson. I mean they weren't in same leauge really not even close way out matched. There no same in losing but he was ranked really fucking high pound for pound for beating guys he was way bigger then and when he could not knock a guy out kinda had no plain b really. People were saying he was top pound for pound then got owned and looked like a dear in the head lights also to a guy his size and not some won he was huge against. He is most likely going to lose to the top guys at the weight above him which he is going to have to move up he should be fight a lw really and Gamboa would kill that dude.

You think Gamboa would kill Nonito? :D
-
Re: Nonito Donaire fires Robert Garcia... Employs his dad
Yea i think he would crush him and make him look bad to be honest if they fight at lw were Donaire should of been a long time ago. He has been fighting guys who he literally makes look like there are children because of how much bigger he is. I think Gamboa speed and power would rock shit out of him.

Right. The guy you are referring to is Victor Conte, who ran Balco, who was busted by the feds and served prison time for distributing steroids to athletes. Why would a guy FAMOUS for being busted, the godfather of PEDs himself, a straight guy who went to prison for it, come out and get into the same racket?
Conte also works with the commissions and some of these anti-doping agencies to enhance drug testing, because obviously he knows the in's and out's. And before he got into the steroid business, he was actually a world renowned nutritionist who pioneered a lot of legit stuff, including doing rigorous testing on athlete's blood to see what could be improved (white cell counts, what nutritients were deficient, ect). From all accounts, he's gone back into the legal nutrition side of things and is doing just fine.
If he was back in the steroid game and had anything to hide, he would be hiding it. You wouldn't hear of people PUBLICLY signing on with him: it would all take place in private like it used to. If a guy was doing steroids, why would he openly hire the godfather of steroids, a guy known for it? The only reason would be is that they're on the level and have nothing to hide. So I don't buy into those conclusions about Donaire and other fighters who are working with Conte.

Re: Nonito Donaire fires Robert Garcia... Employs his dad
I like Donaire he is exciting and believes he needs a shake up in his training. It is his career and he can choose whoever he wants. I think Garcia is not as good as many people make out.

This coming from the biggest PAC nut masseuse. This would be a complete 360 character assassination if Conte were working for Floyd.
