how chino can pull off an upset
I was reading a few boxing news articles and they all talk about how little a chance Chino has against Floyd. One says the key will be for Chino to attack Floyd's body to wear him down and negate Floyd's speed advantage. Makes sense but I think a lot of us, or at least me thought of a game plan Floyd's last few opponents could use to beat him. I thought if Garcia could work on the inside he had a chance. I thought if Canelo could use his power effectively he would have a chance.
I developed a game plan for everyone who fought Floyd to no avail. It was reported that Chinos plan is to fight Floyd like he fought Broner. Problem is Broner is not Floyd despite thinking he is. If Chino were to win it would probably be one of the biggest upsets in boxing. It won't happen. Floyd will probably make Chino look foolish.
I don't think Khan would have stood a chance either but at least he could probably catch Floyd with his speed. Anyway, I think this will probably be another Floyd fight. If Chino does stand a chance it will probably be in the first few rounds where Floyd typically feels out his opponents. After that he dominates the pace and location of the fight.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
Game plan to beat Floyd?? I don't think there is one per say. His best shot is to keep changing his game plan, don't let Floyd figure out your timing and/or punch variation. If Maidana stays one dimensional (head hunting) the entire fight, its a wrap.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
He needs to go all Rocky Marciano and just hit anything he sees. Full on attack mode and hope he gets lucky.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
You know its funny how they compare Broner to Mayweather because it is apples and oranges really. Fighters think that because they have learned to shoulder roll and block punches then that makes them like Money when in all actuality they have only scratched the surface. Really watch Floyd, his timing and ability to move around that ring and put together his punches is second to none he never lets his opponents set the pace. Broner stays in 1 place and flurries here and there which guys like Chino love because they stay in 1 place. This will be a one sided ass whooping for Floyd. The only way Chino stands a chance is to be in Floyds chest and not let him find his rhythm from the opening bell and brawl not box him from low blows to head-butts to coming close to being disqualified if he has to but make it a fight.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
It was just mentioned that Chino should go Rocky Marciano on Floyd. No one ever has. You remember Larry Holmes until he made the comment about Marciano not being able to carry his jock strap don't you? Floyd and Holmes both share something in common and as we used to say in The Marine Corps,"One day your mouth is going to write a check your ass can't cash." Here it is, everyone was so focused on their mouths that they forgot to hit the body and ignore that hole on top because at certain points of the fight it won't be available while you opponent is fresh. It's like going to see a great movie. You have to go to the box office in this case a head shot and Floyd will see it a mile away or come in the side door as in cutting off the ring and hitting the body but forget the head early unless Floyd makes an error and takes one peek too many at the screen. I hope I understood the original thread.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
He needs to convince himself its a 4 round fight and quite simply realize his only shot is a ko. Go all body and even some high thigh shots :-X. Methamphetamines and a M-4 will also increase his chances.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
It will take a very capable fighter to pull of the floyd win. Im not sure chino can train for it in one short camp, but Everyone has flaws though and bad habits that can be exploited. The thing about floyd is he's better defensive fighter than most and a better offensive fighter than most. The secret to beating floyd is to catch him in transition between offense and defense. It's a small window but its there to be exploited.
If you sit back and try to counter him, you're going to be too slow and he wont be there for the return. So he'll take up real estate in the center of the ring and start picking at you with pot shots and then the crowd gets into it. If you go on the offensive and back him up, hes going to try to pick you off on the way in and then retreat into his shell along the ropes. This is where most fighters get greedy and stay too long. Floyd will then change back to offense and put that forearm into you and push you out just enough to sneak in that punch with the in other hand and then unload on you or he'll clinch and then the ref separates you which is a nice easy transition back to offense in the middle of the ring where he has room to work.
You need a fighter that has some head movement and decent footwork (easier now that his legs got older)to corral floyd and push him back. The key is not to get greedy. Just move your way in. Jab.. double jab and use your straight punches. That will get his feet together and his upper body in that cross block position. Nows the time to work your hooks. This gets the crowd and the judges on your side. Now comes the unconventional part that noone gets... Step out before he finds you and zero's in on you and changes back over into offense in his mind because he thinks its safe. He'll follow you out looking to even to get back some of those points he's given away. Body still in defense, mind now on offense. That's when you have to exchange and step into him with your straight punches. You're confusing him and dictating the pace of the fight. Its not a conscious choice to him so he can't change it. He'll either before forced to stay in the shell and let you rack up points or come out and expose himself in transitions.
It's an the boxing equivalent of the off speed pitch. Your body's trying to react to thoughts at the same time. Everyone's vulnerable in transition. few people have seen it with floyd because he controls when and where it happens by dictating the pace of the fight. All it takes is a momentary lapse in concentration. You can either wait for it to happen and try to take advantage of it or find a way to trigger it.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
He needs to take his hunting rifle to the ring, fully loaded, because there is nothing he can do legally for a better chance..
I bet Floyd is licking his chops at the thought of fighting this punching bag. This is the kind of fight where Floyd will be able to display everything in his arsenal and he's going to be all offense..
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
I think everyone is right on the money. I'm glad to see Chino get a nice payday but I think this fight will be all Floyd. I can see Chino getting flabbergasted and punching at air. The article I read stressed the importance of Chino working Floyd's body but to do that he needs to find Floyd. Chino is an excellent fighter but he is way out of Floyd's class. Floyd will look like a master, which he is, and Maidana will look like a chump, which he isn't. I think Chino Wil send up on his ass a few times. Floyd is itching for a knockout which I don't think will happen unless Chino gets so frustrated he gets careless, which is possible.
I am thinking of getting the fight but not for the Floyd fight which I think is predetermined as soon as the bell rings but the undercard are great fights themselves.
I must say, as much as I dislike Floyd he is a marvel to watch in the ring.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
I get a kick out of arm-chair trainers who come up with these game plans to beat Floyd.
"Ya know ya just gotta bang the body and also jab because he hates getting jabbed ya know"
People have been saying that and guys have been trying that and failing for 18 years.
Maidana's chance is to fucking land a haymaker on Floyd's jaw, and to hope that Floyd maybe gets old overnight Roy Jones style.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
Agreed, some hail mary is about his only hope. He isn't fast, skilled or durable enough to consistently employ anything that will be effective against Floyd. How the fight looks more or less depends on how Maidana is able to take Floyds punches, it will either be a clinic or a beatdown depending on that, imo.

Lol tell me about it. Lol @ the armchair trainer comment.
Yea there is nothing maidana can do to raise his chances because he doesn't possess the necessary tools first and foremost. Second, there is no blueprint on how to beat floyd until somebody actually fuckin beats him.
He can use some plasters in his gloves or a 12 gauge but those are illegal.

Actually bean man, I was just quoting from different articles I read.In them, they emphasized Chino has little chance of winning. They were just saying in order to pull off an upset Chino would need to find away to neutralize Floyd's speed. Body work makes sense but I think Chino has a snowballs chance in hell. Besides, I think most of us fans are armchair trainers.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't just watch fights. I study the fighters and take note of what they're doing right and doing wrong. Granted you cant tell everything about a fighter from their best or worst moments, but you can study the fighter and see the opportunities, mistakes, hesitations there from fight to fight. Whether a particular fighter can take advantage is anyone's guess/opinion.
What we (armchair trainers included) may have seen on floyd:
Jabs to the body and straight punches can get him into a defensive posture. That can put you in a position to score with punches. His best offense comes from him using his speed to bridge the gap and tag you, then push off and get out of range. If he's already in range and caught with his feet wide, he's usually looking to counter punch. If he transitions to offense too fast (before he can step out and gain distance) and looks to lead with punches when already in range (where he normally looks to counter), he's not using his world famous defense.

Again. When caught in range, he's not good at leading. This is a range where he relies on his defense and counter punching.

He rarely comes across someone quick enough to take advantage when hes coming to them from the outside.
When you look at most of the work Ortiz and Castillo got done against mayweather. Its using straight punches to drive floyd back and taking advantage of him being in a defensive posture. Backing off and then getting right back on him before he has a chance to walk away or bridge the gap with his speed and land first.

As Emmanuel Agustus (floyds self professed toughest fight) found gradually realized, you cant cant stand in front of floyd and not throw punches. Agustus with determination and awkward footwork working in different ranges had floyd constantly changing his mind between offense and defense and got a lot of work done in between.

In 18 years, everyone tried to outbox him or out fight him. Noone out thought him. No fighters unbeatable. You just have to know what to look for. Floyds most important weapon is his brain and his reflexes. They can be used against him if you know the cues hes looking for. Chino could land a shot in an exchange, but to following the above, requires more natural ability and training than he possesses at this point. Just my opinion.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
Well one thing for sure he has to put his head into Floyds chest and wing away with those awkward hooks , he has to fight a very high pace or he will be picked apart , who knows fighters get old and is Maidana any worse than many others who tried to take Floyds 0.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
Zero chance.
He is undersized in this weight division to be competitive, lacking the explosive power-- the minimum requirement, a puncher's chance is not even on the table.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
Maidana reminds me of jorge castro, and that guy won a lot of fights. He was crude, stylistically, strong and durable. But he was also more thoughtful than he appeared. Maidana moved his feet around to give himself some angles against broner in ways that were straight out of the castro playbook.
I don't think that you are going to pot-shot Mayweather and get him out- though anything can happen- because he is too aware in the ring. I don't think that you are going to bully him around and maul him because he can fight inside, he can move effectively, and all Mayweathers can punch when they want to.
To beat him I think you need to be a tough durable guy that can keep doing things he doesn't expect, lay traps for him. Like Dempsey said, sometimes the smart guys forget the other guy is thinking too. I do not know if maidana is that clever and I don't expect him to be.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
Nope, I give him zero shot.. his offense will be shut down worse than corrales..
Maidana is like a 15/1 bumdog in my book..
I agree with Rant.. this is the epitome if a gimmie fight.
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
the key, is to CASTILLO 1 him. yeah, the first fight castillo was robbed of. pressure pressure pressure and hope something big lands! get him in a corner, trap his ass, rattle floyds nerves and make him uneasy and flighty. then hopefully the big shot will land.
here's to hoping!!!
Re: how chino can pull off an upset
He has about as much chance at causing an upset as I do winning the lottery.
