Lennox is as British as the Queen.

for the real boxing historians amongst you .... I nominate Tom Cribb or Jem Mace

Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
Any man who is born less than 2 miles from were I grew up and supports the same football team as the Queen is as English as anyone you could care to mention.
Nice try though.

When you learn to box in another country and go as far as representing that country in the olympics, I think that DQs you!
Lennox's genetics are from Jamaica and he grew up and learned to box in Canada... just because he talks with an accent and likes football doesn't mean the British can claim him.

Mace was probably 100 years ahead of his time.
The Question says British and not English so I'm going with one of Maces students Sam Langford. In the early 1900's Canada was as British as Britain and flew the Union Jack. Our Army was British right down to food rations and we took orders from Britain including going to war.

Surely somebodies birthplace and who they identify themselves as is what determines their nationality not where they spent the second decade of their life ? Lewis did not feel celebrated by the ignorant Canadians who could not get past his skin colour despite what he did for your country after only being there 6 years.
"I have always been English, ever since I emigrated from England and since the kids in Canada beat me up at the age of twelve for having an East London Cockney accent. I thank them for the cockney taunts because the beatings turned me on to boxing."
Lennox Lewis

Lennox Lewis
Yeah, because us Canadians have such a long history of slavery and racial prejudice against blacks... oh wait, that's right, Canada isn't part of America! Silly me!
And Lennox claiming to be British is purely financial. Boxing just wasn't big in Canada like it was across the pond. He didn't get the support in Canada, so THEN he decided he wanted to be British.
If he wanted to be British, he would have fought for England's olympic team. Instead, he represented Canada. You can't just win learn to box in a country and then win a gold medal for that country, and then be like "oh fuck that country, I'm actually British". Lennox is a product of Canada. When you look at a product and it says "MADE IN CHINA" or "MADE IN THE USA", it's a product of that nation. Maybe the raw materials were created in another country, but the finished product was produced by that nation. Word is born.
And yeah I did just compare a human being to Chinese trinket. So what?
-
Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
The answer is Lennox Lewis, Bruno and then Cooper.

The thing is it is not about the British claiming Lennox Lewis, being English is something Lennox has claimed for himself. Not that it is at all arrogant for you to start a poll from Canada on a British website about the greatest British Heavyweight of all time and then leave out A British born heavyweight who claims to be British himself. If I did not know better I would think you are trolling. You have made it into an Aunt Sally ( what you are so fond of calling a straw man) argument by introducing this little irrelevance
"Yeah, because us Canadians have such a long history of slavery and racial prejudice against blacks... oh wait, that's right, Canada isn't part of America! Silly me!"
Did I ever say such a thing? Why would I mistake Canada as part of America ? and what the hell does Lennox Genetics coming from Jamaica have to do with anything? Do you think everyone in Britain is white with a bowler hat? We don't all look like Sean O'Sullivan you know :-X
Jim Cornall, Canada but originally English: Now that I live in Canada, you are usually here referred to as: "Canadian Lennox Lewis who now lives in England." How do you feel about this? Do you consider yourself completely English now?
Lennox Lewis: I have always been English, ever since I emigrated from England and since the kids in Canada beat me up at the age of twelve for having an East London Cockney accent. I thank them for the cockney taunts because the beatings turned me on to boxing.

To be fair in that statement Lennox is saying Canada made him a boxer.
Maybe he's genuinely curious about great British heavyweights and already knows about Lennox.(even if it did seem he was poking the bear, tongue in cheek perhaps?)
I know I was looking forward to some in depth answers.
-
Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
Well if I had to pick from this list I would pick Henry Cooper who fought in a very tough era.
-
Lennox was born in England. England is part of Great Britain. Lennox left Great Britain at 12 by which time he was irrevocably British. He then himself returned to Britain as an Adult and fought as a Brit from Britain. He has repeatedly claimed to be proud of his Great British heritage and England the place where he was born. He is British.
-
Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
Queen was very British, no? I thought that Freddie Mercury was very British.
-
Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
btw: I'm the only one, thus far, that voted for Frank Bruno.

No but I think Donovan Bailey was ;D

Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
Bob Fitzsimmons. Highly questionable that he was a heavyweight, but did win the lineal undisputed heavyweight title (only other British boxer that can say that is Lennox). Clearly the best fighter on the list pound for pound. In my view, top 5 middleweight and top 5 light-heavy. Not anywhere near top-anything at heavyweight. Lennox is the real answer, but he was not on the list. If I were inclined to do the write-in thing, then Lennox clearly.

Yeah he was borne and lived in England as a kid but his formative years were spent in Canada, where he also learned to box. And the genetics that made him a huge brute of a man came from Jamaica. So I don't really see what England had to do with making Lennox the boxer.

Who cares what Lennox says. You can't change what you are, and that's a dude who learned to box in Canada and represented Canada in the olympics.

Yes except for Lewis, Tyson and Witherspoon being alive.

You have to give Bruno credit though, he was making Lennox look easy and beating the stuffing out of him. If he didn't get impatient/over agressive and get caught with that Hail Mary he would have stopped Lennox shortly. I was terrified because I had what was a significant amount of money to me at the time on Lennox. Thank goodness Bruno short circuited.
-
Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
Bruno was a tough customer for sure. Big fucker, he was. Hit like a battering ram.
-
Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
Bruno was a good fighter the only thing that did not allow him to be great is that when he got hurt he fucking had no idea what to do. I mean if he could just hang on or take a knee fucking anything but he would just stand there take it and get tkod or kod was a big down fall for him.

Borne ? With an e ? The first 12 years of a life are a persons formative years, the only way your argument can make any sense is if you put your fingers in your ears and wail like a banshee. Your ridiculous argument about Jamaican genetics would necessitate the complete revision of thousands of medals the world over. You are moving the goalposts. Your question asked who is the greatest British Heavyweight of all time and now you are disqualifying a British born Athlete who refers to himself as British because you have your knickers in a twist over the paucity of Canadian talent. Where did the genetics that make Wladimir Klitschko and David Price such huge "brutes" come from ? Jamaica ?

Well I think you're getting too caught up in the "genetics" thing, it was more of a throwaway point to show that he didn't even really have deep British roots.
I'm not moving the goal post at all, I'm making it very clear where I stand and what I'm saying to you: was Lennox Lewis a British citizen? Sure. And as far as I know he still lives over there.
What I'm saying to you, in no uncertain or ambiguous terms, is that England had absolutely nothing to do with producing Lennox THE BOXER. He learned to box in Canada, represented Canada in the Olympics as opposed to England, and then trained in America with Manny Steward.
Was Lennox born in England? YES. Does Lennox consider himself British? YES. Does Lennox speak with a British accent? YES. I'm not disputing any of those things.
Lennox the boxer isn't a product of England. Straight up. It'd be like saying Arturo Gatti is an Italian boxer.

Did Gatti return to Italy and fight for the Italian Belt ? Do you really think you can get to 12 years old in the East End without having a fight? What do you think returning to England to become a pro actually signified then? Fighting in York Hall on Bethnal Green, The Royal Albert Hall,Crystal Palace,Hull,Gateshead,Sheffield,Cardiff and Wembley is what makes Lewis a product of Britain. He was taught as an amateur in Canada by a Romanian
before the American John Davenport trained him for 19 fights. Then later his British Promoter Maloney brought Steward in to train his British based British Boxer. To claim that Lennox the boxer is not a product of England is like claiming that Amir Khan is not British because his parents are Pakistani and he trained with Freddy Roach in America.

Re: Greatest British HW of all time? Vote NOW!
"My mum took me to Canada when I was 12, but I am British in my heart. There is a real fearlessness to the British that I feel. I came out of a dance in Canada when I was a teenager and about 30 kids came after me and my friend, and I said, ‘Let's stand our ground.' So we turned to these kids and said, ‘Come on then, let's have you.' And they all ran away, until there were just two or three left. In East London, that would never have happened. They'd have stayed together and beaten me up." Lennox Lewis
That would suggest he got his fighting spirit from being born and raised in Britain. Maybe if he was born and raised in Canada he'd never have even become a boxer.

True, but maybe if he was raised in Britain he would have been a mediocre boxer like most of the other HW's England produces hehehe. Him and Audley might have been fighting this weekend!

thing is most of the HWs from ever country in the world are mediocre/plop, that doesnt set britain appart
what does set britain appart from every other country is that theres only one bruno, and hes English
