The Sweet Science at it's finest
When you talk about the sweet science at it's finest, people bring up fights like Gatti/Ward and Hagler/Hearns.
No, stupid.
Boxing is about hitting and not getting hit. I think this (along with Floyd vs Corrales) is one of the best examples of the sweet science. Pernell giving JCC a boxing lesson and getting robbed of a victory.
It's easy to be slick against inferior opposition, but at 87-0 at the time JCC was one of the greatest pressure fighters we've ever seen. He was also one of the best finishers with 74 KO's in those 87 wins.

Brilliant performance.

Trinidad was so 1-dimensional, yet he still kicked the living $#!t out of Whitaker's lil @$$ every round, Whitaker's sweet science be damned...

You should be arguing with me and saying Pernell agreed to fight at 145lb and that drained and disadvantaged sweet pea.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
That would be disingenuous because Sweet Pea is fabulous at any weight.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
You would also need to put Rigo on that list. He has the sweet science down to a science. I guess there has to be some kind of mix. I appreciated what Rigo did in the ring and made a point to watch his fights but for your ordinary fan he can be boring as he'll. Sometimes what Rigo could do was akin to a picture throwing a no hitter.

Stop with the excuses.
WW wasn't Wittaker's best weight either.
He could have fought Pernell much earlier but he was too busy trolling cab-stands for opponents.

After Pernell was coming off a year long layoff.
At least he didn't get planted on his face like that dumb dog-eater you worship;D

Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
De La Hoya deserved the decision over Whitaker too.
Whitaker did jack-$#!t in that fight.
He made De La Hoya miss, but he didn't counter after the slips; he just walked away instead. Crap-fight, but you have to give the decision to the guy who was at least throwing some punches.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
there are two sides:
do not get hit and be fun to watch. No one can beat prime Tyson from these perspectives.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
Whitaker was a ring general in the truest form that night. Hit and not be hit, other than Chavez occasional right he peppered Julio with the frequency of a grilled t bone. Texas, King and Sullied'man...the deck was stacked going in. King was already negotiating deals with the MGM but only if Chavez didn't lose...the whole scenario kicked boxing and the fans right in the balls.

Great fight. Toney was a pleasure to watch at his best

Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
McCallum kind of threw it out the window and still damn near pulled it out in 1st bout, slugging on both guys part.
Random, I see Whitaker miles closer to Toney in style than a Mayweather, whole different kind of backfoot blend and asserting some inside respect. Hated Whitaker in 91' but grew to appreciate the shit outta him in hindsight

Floyd is better than Wittaker.
At 1:AM Floyd is in the gym
At 1:AM Wittaker is in the crackhouse.
You were busy hating him in 91 and you'd be hating him now if he were in his prime.

Floyd's a crack-baby, does that count? :)

I thought McCallum won that fight and both were beautiful boxers.

Dafaq are you on about ass hat??? I hated him in 91' because I didn't appreciate boxing and was more interested in heavyweights beating the shit outta each other. Called growth and expanding a mind and admitting I could be a narrow minded clown there. Try it :cwm13:

Agree. Whitaker brought his A defense that night. But he only brought his barely D offense

1 AM in the gym, is a sign of bad time management.

Agreed. So you train at night means you sleep in the day when the other fighter is training.

One of the greatest fights to ever display the art of the (SWEET SCIENCE) Hopkins defeating Trinindad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvbJ8kgLW7Q

Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
Patient, methodical & held his machismo in check. Barrera took Hamed to school and taught him the art of boxing: A technical, tactical performance. Threw only when needed, balanced, ring general favoring no one shot. I'd call this a Sweet Science fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSAToqk7Yis

Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
Not many mention this fight. Mosley usually a boxer-puncher puts on a clinic against Collazo. Great skills on display. Shane schooled Collazo so well, I thought maybe Luis was over it. But Collazo went on to win and also gave Berto hell proving IMO that Shane executed the sweet science against him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1wzjieRB00

Toney spoilt his victory for testing positive for drugs.

Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
That is how I see Floyd winning the fight boxing on the outside, using the distance and countering. Too fast, quick and experienced.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
Will Floyd be willing to exchange like this though? Erik had to take some to give it.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
Floyd's leagues above Morales and JMM in terms of boxing ability though.

Can't disagree, but my statement goes with the old addage (styles make fights)
Morales' display of the sweet science against Pac was that he took shots to give them and threw alot when needed.
I'm sure you've seen your share of fights where a better skilled fighter got outworked-outhustled or outgutted: not outsmarted or outboxed.
-
Re: The Sweet Science at it's finest
Rarely do both men display the sweet science. Shane & Oscar fight one was a masterpiece painted on the canvas between them both.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chMQWStbCmI Not a brawl, but a boxing match of two young skilled guys positioning, jabbing & trying to out hook the other.
