Tough Athletes

Lebron James is a great athlete, but he is NOT tough. Who the fuck gets CARRIED off the field of play due to cramps? A soccer player wasting time? Maybe but you don't expect that kind of shit from a professional basketball player so my friends this thread is dedicated to the TOUGHEST athletes from the past and present I'll go ahead and start it off .....

Hockey has the toughest athletes outside of combat sports IMO. It's just an age-old culture of being tough and sucking it up. You're taking hits that are harder than football hits, and you have to jump in front of a piece of rubber flying 100mph. Rough rough game.

Of course every sport has it's exceptions. There are wimps in hockey and football, just like there are tough guys in basketball and golf.

I'm not a basketball fan but I remember Steve Nash playing through broken noses, eyes swollen shut, ect.

I just laced up the skates again after an 18 year hiatus....1st game I blocked a shot, took that slapshot right to the ribs the puck completely missed my pads and I doubt it was going maybe 60-70 mph if that but it left a nice little bruise on me and was a little tender for a while but it's hockey you deal with shit like that.


Hockey guys are tough as nails but also 100% about the TEAM and not about individual successes. It's one of those unwritten rules in the game.

Oh no doubt...typically the wimps don't last in hockey though.


Ben Hogan played after a car crash that almost killed him, Willie Pep fought after a plane crash that almost killed him, Tiger Woods played on 1 leg, Michael Jordan had "the flu game", Kellen Winslow had "The Epic in Miami", Willis Reed was a tough SOB.


I just want our forum members to appreciate the gutsy performances of athletes and cherish them because that shit with Lebron was ridiculous. I was taught that in sports you get carried off the field for 2 reasons and 2 reasons only #1 You win a huge game or you break some record or something and #2 You are physically unable to walk....anything other than that is disrespectful to the fans and the players.

LeBron is a great athlete but for shits sake....man up and WALK OFF THE COURT! Kobe Bryant tore his Achilles but he took 2 free throws and then walked off the court....THAT IS TOUGH!!!

I guess you either have the heart or you don't.

I don't know a lot about basketball but I figure Lebron being as big and athletic as he is is used to having it his way, especially in a sport where you're not allowed to touch him.

A lot of boxers over the years really didn't have that heart, they had all the talent in the world but no heart to tough it out. So when you get a guy in boxing who has world class talent and balls of steel it's a beautiful thing. Guys like Ali, Ray Leonard, and dare I say PBF who fought JLC with a torn rotator cuff.

Some guys have that "put your head down and plough through it" attitude and some guys have the "lay down and die" attitude.

Sometimes what looks like weakness can be explained by genuinely horrific nightmare scenarios.

Derrick Jefferson vs Oleg Maskaev.

Jefferson suffered a broken ankle from a knockdown in rd 1, but he fought on for 3 more rds on that broken left ankle till the ref finally stopped it near the end of the 4th.

It wasn't a twist, nor a sprain. It was confirmed to be broken later.

That's fucking rough. That happened a few weeks ago on a UFC. Dude snapped his ankle and was trying to stand on it to fight and it just kept giving out. He fought the full round with it but they stopped it after the round ended because they could see it was broken.

Holyfield fought with a torn rotator cough.
The shoulder pain from a torn rotator cough is excrutiating, but Holyfield still fought twice like that.

Roy Jones had a broken wrist, only healing for about 10 days, but he still took the fight.

Iron Mike Tyson picked up gonorrhea from some hu-err, but he still took the Heavyweight Title while p!$$ing fire...

In fact, another time, Mike Tyson had a broken back, a vertebrae was actually fractured, but Tyson still took the fight and won.


These UFC guys get a metaphorical hangnail and...well, y'know...

On that note Tyson ruptured his knee against Williams and carried on for a bit. Bradley broke his ankles against Manny in their first fight.

I guess it's because the UFC provides insurance for those injured while training for a fight, so they get paid, whereas no boxing promoter would EVER offer that kind of insurance because they are a bunch of money grubbing scum bags.

I admire people who get injured during a fight and fight on, but I have to question the intelligence of someone who goes into a fight seriously injured.

ufc takes care of the fighters, right...

ufc paydays are the biggest hosejob in all sports.
The whole roster gets peanuts, maybe less than 20% of the profits go to the fighters, and the 80% bulk of profits go right to dana white and the fertittas.
These effin' guys are worse than don king when it comes to rippin' off fighters...

these ufc guys are all pullin' out of fights right-and-left now that they can't take their precious steroids anymore and get away with it (Testerone Replacement Therapy).

There's a couple of more things to it than meets the eye though. I would of thought the second reason people get carried off was cause it holds the game up longer if they tried hobbling off on their own and they get a fresh man out there faster. Pain comes in degrees depending on the persons situation too, adrenalin helps, mindfulness too;shit hurts heaps more when you are at home relaxing than out there doing it.The mind cant think of two separate things at once, so you can go somewhere else away from the pain, but not everyone can do that and it doesnt make them worse or better.Then there are a few just plain stupid fuckers with giant egos who would do more damage to themselves instead of looking long term.On the other hand you may get a team player still intelligent within the pain, but wants to make the finals game next week so he's smart and goes off.The whimp.;D
