Quotes from Stevie Collins/Freddie Roach on Roy Jones Jr
Steve Collins: "I first met Roy 20 years ago when he came to Ireland to represent the USA, he was over - powered by my team - mate and it was in the category below me ( light - middleweight ). I was fighting there too and I won my fight and I offered to have a friendly sparring with Roy if he wanted and he refused. Roy Jones is an ectomorph, always was an ectomorph. I'm an endomorph or mesomorph, I have big bones. I even fought at heavyweight in the junior's. Now this is one reason I would of beaten Roy Jones. If I made it rough and tumble, it would be like a man against a boy. Why do you think Roy Jones has failed to knockout light - heavyweights? It's because he is an ectomorph and shouldn't of been boxing in as high a weight - category as that. Just look how small his waist is, look how skinny his wrists are."
Collins beat John Reid in 1986 at 165 in the Irish middle final, Jones lost to John Reid a few weeks later at 156.

Freddie Roach: "Roy was only fighting guys who he knew didn't truly want to fight him, he wouldn't fight anybody who would stand up to him and believed they would beat him. That's why Steve (Collins) would of beat him, he'd of roughed him up. He'd of been at Roy's chest, sticking to Roy like glue. He'd of won the fight on infighting."
Steve Collins: "Oh no. He's a tough b******, Vinnie. I'd fight [former world super-middleweight, light-middleweight and heavyweight champ] Roy Jones before I'd fight Vinnie Jones."

QUESTION: Steve, Roy Jones Jnr showed absolutely no interest in fighting you for a unification fight at super-middleweight. It's difficult to believe that the man who has been the best pound-for-pound fighter for the past 10 years or more would have been scared of you in the slightest. What was the real reason the fight never even got to the negotiation table?
James Slattery
STEVE COLLINS: Well James, I travelled to Pensacola to see Roy Jones fight and I actually climbed into the ring after his fight. I accused him of avoiding me and I challenged him live on national TV. At the post-fight conference I spoke to Jones and the press, I called him a coward and a yellow dog and I offered to fight him, winners take all. I would have beaten Roy Jones and he knew it!

Ian Darke: "Now you have beaten Chris Eubank twice and now Nigel Benn twice, Who do you want now?"
Steve Collins: "The fight I've been looking for, for a long time is Roy Jones. But Roy Jones is running scared, he fights nobodies, he fights men with prison records not boxing records. If Roy Jones doesn't fight then people will remember him as the man who was afraid of Steve Collins."
Collins first wanted to fight Jones after Jones beat Hopkins, because Collins was IBF number-one contender.

Re: Quotes from Stevie Collins/Freddie Roach on Roy Jones Jr
actually, one of my strangest memories from childhood concerned eubank....
i was 11 years old and was shopping with my parents in brighton.....and stood outside a shop was eubank in a white shirt and black trousers. i knew who he was because i was a fight fan even then......
he just stood there leaning against the wall.....he didnt seem to be very busy that day...
just a memory that has always stayed with me....

Re: Quotes from Stevie Collins/Freddie Roach on Roy Jones Jr
Steve Collins would of got his ass kicked, shame Roy never had the balls to get in the ring with him.

Totally agree ;D

Re: Quotes from Stevie Collins/Freddie Roach on Roy Jones Jr
I think that fight did not make sense from a money point of view for Jones as it would be in the US and most have never heard of Collins.
Jones would win it easy if they had fought.

And it takes some armchair fan to knock a Wayne Asker clean out with your right hook when Asker had never even been put down before amateur or pro. Go fuck yourself, or I'll make you my bitch.

damn that was soooo original...you made that up yourself didn't you?
I'll say it one more time, then I have to go work on plyometrics...
BOXING IS NOT ABOUT IF A KO'S B, AND C UD'S B, A IS BETTER THAN C. ITS A FUCKING SITUATION OF ROCK PAPER SCISSORS AND A VARIABLE OF HOW HARD A GUY TRAINED, THROWN IN.
take your annoying novice bullshit elsewhere..

Re: Quotes from Stevie Collins/Freddie Roach on Roy Jones Jr
And I don't believe any boxers should use plyo's unless they are advanced, so I assume that you are an experienced amateur or top pro. Otherwise your just fooling yourself, when you should be working on boxing (if you want to be a boxer).

Re: Quotes from Stevie Collins/Freddie Roach on Roy Jones Jr
I love it...because I love Roy Jones jr...and everytime someone mentions who would have beat him based off hypothectical non-sense is hilarious to me...and this guy collins are you serious!!!!This gangly, goofy, flat-footed guy, would have gotten his ass tore up by Roy at 168 or below....this can't be serious...it's funny but here's a hypothectical....had Roy retired after beating Ruiz for the heavyweight crown he'd be declared the best ever hands down, but now everyone trying to apply all this should've could've would've bullshiit now that he's lost..and basically by his own admission after the Ruiz fight said that he had accomplished everything he wanted in boxing and was only out to get a big check after that so mentally he wasn't the same fighter....

Collins would have stood little chance against Jones, the guy was a joke.
As for Jones, my money would of been Benn, Eubank or McClellan had they fought Jones. I said that 12 years ago.

Collins may have stood little chance against Jones, but to call him a joke makes u look stupid!
that joke beat Eubank and Benn twice each! say what u want about them been past it but he still beat them, and whoever else would fight him, at least he had the balls to call out the best in RJJ, yeah he probably wouldn't have won but this is boxing and anything can happen. He was one of the toughest fighters around and certainly no joke

Collins records: 39 fights, 36 wins (21 KOs). He was WBO middleweight and supermiddleweight champ (defending 6 times and retiring as a champ). Seems like the guy was not a joke at all.

Collins was looking to get a big payday...hoping he could "sucker" a great fighter into fighting him....Kinda like Tarver....but RJJ wasn't taking the bait......he was looking for challenging fighters and bigger paydays....when Collins beat benn he was already a spent fighter after all the wars.....Benn lost to a then 41 year old Thulani Maglinga before the Collins fight....he was done....Collins pounced and beat an already fallen legend.....as for eubank...eubank lost 5 of his last 9 fights....he was at the end as well....Collins benifited from father time......not from being a better fighter....
