Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160

It doesn't look like the big challenges were coming and maybe this could help him try and get a GGG fight.

I guess the 1.4 million to fight Korobov was not big enough.

Fucking pathetic waste of space. Korobov is nothing special. Career high pay day and he turns it down. Quillin is a disgrace and Haymon is a disgrace to boxing and is making a mockery of the sport.

I wont hold my breath. This guy refuses to step up and the Wbo gave him an extension and he still fled. He might get half that pay against Jacobs but I doubt he takes the fight. If he wanted bigger things then he should have unified with the Kazak. Cotto is the money grab at 160 along with Alvarez when its official and they are booked.
-
Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
Maybe Quillin knows something we don't, like he is on borrowed time and wants the chance to get a big payday vs. Cotto/Canelo vice being exposed and ruined by a lesser known fighter for less money. I don't think the guy is anything more than a glorified club fighter at this point, barely even contender level, but he has some guys on this forum convinced that he is legit and guys like GGG don't stand a chance against him. If he fights even half way decent competition, then there will be no doubt as to what his level as a fighter is.

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
Doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Its not like quillen had been calling people out for years or something. He knew he was playing is fairly safe. The Jacobs fight has been out there for a few weeks in the rumor mill, and its an all brooklyn fight. I personally think Jacobs needs to be showcased for another fight before they build this. So quillen should have fought Korobov. As it is, they are rushing this and wont get the money they think. Not only that. If quillen loses, he most likely drops out of sight...
I'll watch it.... and Root for jacobs (hope he's got that wild swinging out of his system in the last fight.)

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
A damn shame :-\
I was looking forward to it. If he goes after Jacobs, then he'll probably save face. Fighting anybody else (non beltholders) at 160 would be a waste.
-
Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
I've been saying he and Jacobs would do a all in the family home town clash since Jacobs returned and I'd bet this is the road needed in order to make that happen. The wbo very likely would have stripped him had he looked to unify. As long as that's the next step, like we're all sages, I'm not shitting on the guy.

Top Rank VP Not Surprised That Quillin Dropped Title - Boxing News
Looks like it could maybe be Korobov-Billy Joe Saunders for the vacant belt, as they are the highest ranked contenders

Koborov is managed by Top Rank. Quillin by Haymon. Haymon is going to war with Arum of Top Rank. ;D

I hear Roc Nation even had the Barclay Center change the date of a concert booked for the night of to accommodate the Quillin fight!

This is a bad move for Quillin in terms of popularity in boxing. He'll get grief for this because it looks like a duck job. It looks like his team didn't have confidence that he would beat Korobov because the risk/reward ratio when he's being paid $1.4 million is pretty good.
Who vacates the title with a career high pay day in sight against a guy he'd be favored over? If he had a fight with Jacobs lined up, put it on hold for three months, beat Korobov, and then face Jacobs? If WBO wouldn't support unification with Jacobs, then you move on and face Jacobs after making $1.4mm and everyone understands.
Sure, Korobov is promoted by Top Rank, but Jay Z was promoting the fight, AND, Haymon's done business with Top Rank recently - Loma vs. Russell.
This only makes sense if Haymon wouldn't do business with Jay Z. I can't think of any other reason.

Who wouldn't want to do business with a former crack dealer?

What beef does Haymon have with Jay Z?? Could be Haymon may want the money in the pot for himself, like what Arum does with his stable fighters?
Jacobs and Quillin are managed by Haymon. It's a coup for a few extra bucks. If the rationale is this, Quillin/Jacobs may generate more money than Quillin vs. Koborov and Jacobs vs. another stiff until he fights a big name.

Remember chaps he is a adult, and there must be SOME a gender for him to vacate, I
remember Don King falling out with the IBF he told his fighter to vacate there titles.

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
Quillen has been treading water and the title was the only thing making him relevant. lets see what he has planned or his management. Looks like ther is a lot of politics behind the scenes and I hope their personalities do not get in the way of Quillens career.

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
I highly doubt a fighter would dump their belt and a career-high payday because they shit themself. His team are currently the most powerful in boxing, they lost control of the promotion to a fresh outfit, they've now scuppered the new mobs first big venture. Business.

yup thats how I see it. Haymon trying to build a monopoly and doesnt want to let any new competitors in. And while fans still pay to watch his shitty matchups hell get away with it and it makes me sick

Now they're saying that Haymon has issues with Jay Z. But no one could say what it is?? I don't believe it. I believe this is simply Haymon taking control of a knock out artist with a little bit of a name in the MW Division- let's face it, the only name at MW worth talking about is GGG and then Quillin.
So, Haymon just locked down the #2 guy, possibly the #1 guy, in the division.
Haymon may have just secured Quillin, but it was a dumb move by Quillin. Dumb move. So many what ifs?!?!
What if the fight with Jacobs ends up in a draw? What if he loses on points, or by knockout? What if he is robbed by the judges? What if he is stopped on cuts or due to some injury? What if the ref or doctor stops the fight too soon?
All of this makes it very difficult to market him to another title shot through Soliman's IBF belt (which is the conceptualized step after Jacobs), GGG or to regain the WBO belt. GGG already said that the main attraction to Quillin was because Quillin had a belt and a unification run is what GGG wants.
Arum, on the other hand, will most likely manoeuvre Koborov to fight a stable stiff to win the WBO title on a very good occurrence.
Quillin made a very dumb move!

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
Shame you wasn't around to advise Quillen on what a poor job Al Haymon is doing for him.
-
Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
I think Haymon sees what Arum is doing and figures its a good idea. As a matchmaker without a promotional company now, he's probably trying to lock down what he can and sees Jay-Z as someone who is also a newcomer that can possible infringe on his party. Jay-z's money and Venue makes him a threat to any business haymon hasn't locked down yet. (Aside from any Nets and Islanders Games, Jayz could return boxing to brooklyn the way it used to be with a weekly fight night if he wanted to-clearance from a board of directors pending)

Does the move by Quillin make you feel comfortable? So many what ifs... I would not have advised such a treacherous route. He could have fought Koborov and still fight Jacobs and GGG under Haymon.
Everyone has an idea that, no matter what, the possibility of Quillin fighting GGG could only be around late September or early October, at best. Quillin could have dispatched Koborov and Jacobs (if he can) in that time.
jmo...

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
Haymon doesn't get along with Jay Z due to beef they had over how Haymon handled Beyonce's career, or something along those lines. Haymon was a shark in the music business before he went into boxing.
-
Quillin seems to want to fight Jacobs in hometown showdown instead of his mandatory.
Haymon's orders.

Top Rank lost control of the promotion to a fresh outfit too and they're a powerful promoter in boxing. They were fine with Jay Z promoting the fight because their guy was set to make a career high pay day. Why the difference with Quillin who was going to make $1.4 million?
There could be two things going on here. Quillin's team figure even at $1.4 million, this was too tough a fight for him to risk his unbeaten record when he had a better shot against Jacobs where he could pick up another belt and defend it against no-hopers. From a long term financial point of view, it might make more sense to dump the belt, beat Jacobs, and then try to position himself for an even bigger fight against GGG. Odd rationale, but plausible.
Alternatively, this was a business decision by Haymon. He doesn't like Jay Z and didn't like the idea of Jay Z promoting a show with one of his fighters. As @Fenster days, this puts the kibosh on Jay Z's foray into boxing. I tend to think this was the reason because he could have lost to Korobov and still fought Jacobs. He might have made a bit less money, but if he beat Jacobs, he would have set himself up for a rematch with Korobov or an unification fight with another champion. Haymon doesn't want to advance Jay Z's foray into boxing and Haymon even if it would help his fighter.
Haymon has Taylor fighting Solimon, which is a farce of a fight. He'll pit Quillin against Jacobs and the winner against Taylor, assuming he beats Solimon, and then claim that the winner is the best middleweight on the planet, even considering GGG.
The odd part about this is that Golden Boy didn't have a problem with Jay Z promoting the show when they won the bid. I don't have the interview at my fingertips, but I clearly recall that both Golden Boy's representative and Top Rank's representative said that they were happy their guy's were getting paid a lot to fight or something to that effect. Well, what this shows me is that clearly Haymon controls the fights his fighters take, whether or not their promoters disagree. Notice also how Oscar and Eric Gomez, GB's matchmaker, haven't said anything about Quillin's decision. They were strong-armed out of the decision by Haymon.

Quillen may have defended his decision but he has not explained it. It is a gamble, i hope he does not get knocked off course with this decision.

Re: Peter Quillin vacates WBO title, wants bigger challenges at 160
@Fenster was right. This was a power play by Haymon. That's all. Even if you assume Jacobs is a bigger name than Korobov, even if a fight with Quillin is a main event level fight in Brooklyn, which I'm not sure about, considering Quillin's fought once this year, and it was against Konecny, and has never head-lined a fight, but even assuming all that, given the split between champion and challenger, they'd have to pay Jacobs something like $2mm to Peter's $1.4mm. $3.5mm for a fight with Jacobs? Not happening on Showtime. No way.
So, it makes no sense.
